Installer asks for Windows restart
Hi!
Recent 1P versions frequently asks for Windows restart after installing new versions. It begins from about 207 beta or something. Before that I never seen prompts to OS restart after upgrading. But all latest betas always asks for restart. E.g. 210 and 212. Why? Fixes looks like very minor (e.g. when you upgrades from 210 to 211). Is this restart really needed? I can't explain it - you do not use kernel level driver, Windows Service can be restarted without OS restart & etc.

Hey there, EIKA!
I actually wondered this myself a while back, especially when it wasn't "consistent". The answer is that Windows forces this if any files are in use that need to be written. There isn't a lot, but 1Password loads a few DLLs and EXEs into memory, and if they aren't able to terminate in time to be replaced, this will force a reboot. I hope this helps. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />Flag 0 -

It's just promts for PC restart and offers Yes and Not now (or similar buttons). You can ignore reboot and work with PC. But if new release will out (they are out very frequently for Windows!), you will not be able to install new build it until reboot.

I have seen this a few times, but I can't say that I was fully aware what I had done to cause this to be necessary -- I do a lot of crazy stuff though. If I remember correctly, it is a fairly generic Yes/No dialog box. I was able to get this one by leaving Firefox running despite the protests of the setup program:

Since it directly writes new versions of the browser extension, for instance, a reboot is needed if they are in use.Flag 0 -

You will not be able to install new version until OS restart. Try to wait for new beta and do not restart/turn off your PC. And you will see <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Installer asks to close browsers before install. I pretty sure that 1P can't be installed when Chrome run. Just try.Flag 0 -

This isn't necessarily true. Trust me, I have been installing this product many times.Flag 0 -

Trust me also. Recentely updated 1P offered me OS restart. But I discarded! On the next day new beta apears (PC havn't been restarted for these 2 days). And installer of updated beta said me that I need to restart OS before I will be able to install new version. And there was no way to bypass/ignore this! Just only - Restart now or Restart later! And nothing else.
You can be sure for 100%. It's typical algo built-in in installers. Which product you use (e.g. InstallShield)? Check options/RTFM of it and you will see that it's possible.
You may not see this sutiation of you restart/turn off your PC e.g. on the night. Or if your 1P installer never offers OS restart. I am also never seeb OS restart promt for a long time (for about 2 months of 1P usage). But now it show me this promt from time to time.Flag 0 -

Sure I do trust you. I'm not saying this message never appears. I'm sure it sometimes does. However, I'm also sure it doesn't necessarily appear 100% of the time as you are suggesting. I have installed the product many times without this messages, and so have others.Flag 0 -

No. Looks like strage (for non-developers) feature of installer.

It is pretty simple, really: If a file is in use and it cannot be written to you are prompted to restart Windows, which releases the file and allows it to be updated. No voodoo; just good sense.Flag 0 -

Yes, I completely understand you. It looks strange for usual people, not developers.
Good to know thing, nothing else.Flag 0 -
Hey EIKA,
On behalf of Brent, you are most welcome!
I'm glad that you completely understand, and I'm sure that it does look strange to non-developers.
However, the Forums are a great place to bridge the communication gap between developers and non-developers.
Thanks for your observation!
Cheers!

EIKA, I'm sorry that I don't know what to do with that screen shot.
As we've posted before, here and in other threads, sometimes the installer needs you to reboot Windows for some reason.
