Feedback on the new Safari extension

OMG! What were you thinking? You've taken this awesome app on which so many of us have come to depend, and RUINED IT! Now some big ugly box opens demanding my master password. The app is unable to identify any existing passwords for sites I visit. I have to open the big ugly box to find and use a password. I could go on. But instead, suffice it to say that you've just ruined something that worked great. And I'm not the only one struggling with it. My father, who is 90 years old, now is unable to use the app, and since he doesn't remember his passwords, you've made it pretty much pointless for him to use it at all. WHY DID YOU DO THIS? WHEN WILL YOU SET IT RIGHT AGAIN?

I hate complaining, but don't know what else to do. Obviously you made these changes without really thinking things through. Please fix the app. Make it great again. I used to tell everyone to get 1P, now I'm not telling a soul until its fixed.

Ok, done venting. Until the next time I try to use it. Then no doubt these bad feelings will bubble up again. And again. Until I throw it away I suppose.

  • Ditto! Needless to say "therickster" said it all. I expect this from Congress but not from 1Password.

    Hello,

I certainely understand for your father !

If you are still with Leopard or Snow Leopard, you can revert back to Safari 5.0.5 where 1Password works as it used to

seek internet to know how, I used a 5.0.5 Safari download and Pacifist to re-install safari 5.0.5, maybe there are other ways

maybe you upgrade to Safari 5.1, without noticing, which brings the new way of 1Password

    If this may help
  • Hi therickster,

I'm really sorry to hear you're so upset about the changes to 1Password, I presume you're referring to the new Safari extension.

Let me start by explaining why we've done this. With Safari 5.1 in Lion and Snow Leopard a lot of the technologies, in fact most of them, that we relied upon for the old method of integration with Safari have been removed by Apple.

That meant that we had to start from scratch, rebuilding 5 years of work with Safari into a new native Safari extension in just under 2 months. That's no small task as I'm sure you can imagine, but our developers have been working, literally without rest, to bring back functionality and improve the interface based on the huge amount of feedback we've had.

Because of the changes I mentioned, we can never go back to the old interface, it's just not possible, and sadly some features cannot be brought back using the new extensions framework. That said, please do give our latest update a try to see if this gets things up and running for you.

To get this new update please go to 1Password > Preferences > Updates and check 'Include Beta Versions' and then click 'Check Now' to get our latest update. Once that's done, please update the Safari extension to the latest version by performing a manual update within Safari > Preferences > Extensions as we detail at the bottom of this guide:

    http://help.agilebits.com/1Password3/safari_5.1_install_update.html

With some of the new changes in the update, there are few extra steps to follow. First of all, please go to Help > Troubleshooting > Restart Agent within 1Password and finally restart safari with Command-Option-Q to ensure the extension is properly reloaded.

I hope that helps to give you back a lot of the 1Password you love, we're not done yet though and we hope you'll like what we're working on.

    Thanks,

In my questions and comments below I am referring to the newest, latest extension which you are referring to, the one available as of 8/1/11.

I understand that it was difficult to develop the program again from the ground up. However, are you telling us that this gigantic graphic that pops up is REQUIRED to make 1Password compatible with Safari 5.1?

In the new beta implementation of the extension you have made the graphic smaller. That's not good enough. There should be NO GRAPHIC AT ALL!

Don't you understand what made your own product so special? The extension was simple, unobtrusive, and one's brain didn't have to digest more visual information while surfing on the net. The fact that there were no graphics associated with the extension was part of the beauty of the 1Password experience. The use of any image detracts from the usefulness of the program and slows down the experience and enjoyment of using the internet. Please get rid of the graphic altogether.

In the past when I opened the 1Password APPLICATION with my password, I didn't have to re-enter it in the EXTENSION. Now I do. Are you saying that with the new version of Safari prevents you from restoring this functionality?

I agree fully with the OP. I have loved, paid for, and used 1Password for years, but hate (not a word I throw around) the the implementation of the new Safari 5.1 plugin.

The new plugin is ugly, clumsy and requires more steps to do the same things the old one did.

Very very disappointed. You can do better than this. The new "features" that you tout on your website as attractive and wonderful are actually annoying and awful. If you can't make it exactly like it used to be, you can make it a lot better than it is now if you choose.

I emailed agile bits my comments 2 weeks ago and got an automated response. No human response since. Gee, they used to respond even if it was something brief. I wonder what that says about their new attitude toward their customers. I guess the only way I can have a voice in this is to post here.

    Love,

I like the latest extension/GUI released today (3.7b8). I don't find the current GUI overbearing (the first release was not to my liking). I like I can access easily various parts of 1P without having to open the application itself.

My primary complaint has been about the repetitive appearance of the 1P drop down panel asking me if I want to save a username/password that already exists in the 1P database. Seems this latest beta version has corrected that problem as I haven't seen a prompt appear since installing the latest version/extension.

Thank you for the kind words!

Since Lion was released we worked 12+ hours every day to solve as many issues as possible.

I hope you all know that we only complain harshly BECAUSE we care. I get how hard you've worked, and I hear you that Apple changed things and you had to adapt. And now that I've gotten all my reactionary stuff out of the way, I'm going to chill, be patient and wish you well. I want 1Password to be awesome, and more specifically, to be usable by my Dad, for whom it has made life so much easier what with all the security issues that have developed in the last few years online. SO GOOD LUCK and GET ER' DONE!

    best

    Rick

P.S. Apologies if I let my sour mood about the state of the nation today influence me in my reaction to the changed plugin. I'm going to go turn on the beta updates now.
  • I have been a user for about 8 months, I loved how it use to work. I have updated to the latest and now find that the autofill for my sites is not working, basically the software takes me to the site then I have to paste and copy the information. Do I not have this setup correctly or is this the future? I am Ok with the interface other than I do have my sites categorized and with the safari extension this is no longer available. Now you can still get to the old fill & go by right mouse clicking on the application at the bottom of the screen, there again it only take me to the site with no autofill.

If anyone can shed some light on the above that would be great.

With no autofill I don't see any advantages to the software over a spreadsheet.

    Hi Brian,

    Welcome to the forums!

This was fixed in the latest update. Please try the latest update and see if that helps.

  • Hi Brian,

I'm sorry for the trouble here, what you're seeing is that 'Go & Fill' from within 1Password or from the Dock icon isn't working as it should. Are you by any chance running Snow Leopard? If so, we're working on fixing this as for most of the team here and many users the 'Go & Fill' functionality works perfectly in Lion, though we know some users are experiencing some issues.

Of course, this isn't the only way to actually use 1Password, in fact most people use 1Password from directly within the browser. So, with that said, you can use the Command + \ keyboard shortcut to fill your details for a specific site if there's just one Login saved, or if you have multiple accounts you'll see the 1Password interface appear.

You can also use 'Go & Fill' from directly in Safari by using the Command + Option + \ keyboard shortcut which will bring you into 'All Logins' within the Safari extension, you can then search for the Login you want to fill, use the arrow keys to select if needs be and then hit enter to perform a 'Go & Fill'.

    Hope that helps,

You're welcome. I appreciate your creative programming efforts. I realize rapidly responding to Apple's significant changes in a timely fashion is very challenging. Thank you again. I find 1P a great example of what can be created within the OS X API.

On another note, I noticed I have a lot of duplicates (and some triplicates) from the latest surge of Beta prompts. Tedious to go through over 500 entries. At some point it would be nice to have a feature that shows only multiple entires, similar I guess to iTunes (show duplicates).

i was very happy with 1p and told all my friends to purchase the product. i upgraded to safari 5.1 and everything in 1p works and looks the same except it desn't automatically sign in to my sites. of course it's the new extensions. i read the forums and followed the instructions on installing the extensions and still no luck. 1p still does not work and agile customer service is the worst. at least tell your customers it will take a week or mmore to correct the condition. how about giving your users some real information. i'm sure you will fix the problem in the future, future, future. the worst customer service ever!

That's something we've had a few requests for, and I'm sorry the constant save prompts have caused so many duplicates. I can't promise if or when we may be able to implement a duplicate finder, but it's certainly on our radar for the future.

For now, you could use 1Password's search functionality to search out all your logins for a particular site and then clear out the duplicates you don't need.
  • I'm mostly upset with Apple. I wish I'd never seen Lion. I made the mistake of upgrading in the middle of a big project and all the things which I was used to working (like my mouse scroll wheel direction) just went bananas. 1Password - is there anyway you can put the right click contextual menu back into Safari? There's a lot of muscle memory there for me.

Also, I have come to rely on a few self-made Fluid apps for Gmail, Facebook etc. I used to get logged out from time to time and 1Password was available with right click. Now I have to go into the app, copy my password, head back to my Fluid app, paste it in, repeat for user name... Yuck! Really dissolves any advantage to using Fluid right quick.

I applaud your round the clock efforts.... Just please don't quit working yet. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Thanks,

  • I'm wonder where the accessibility went in the new extension. Before it was no problem to use 1p with voice over but now the new extension is completely inaccessible.

The objects are not "clickable" at all and if I click on something the bad bubble

disappears and safari hangs. Using the latest beta at time for writing.

I'm thinking of completely reinstall my system to snow leopard and through this complete junk called lion in the trash. So much accessibility problems. But I hope you can do something to 1p at least.

    Regards.
  • Why am I totally unable to get 1Password to work in Safari 5.1 - when I get the hated gray dialog box, it tells me that data is not available when I type in my password. I am getting frustrated as no one seems to answer my problem despite letters to the forun and to customer support.

    Hi mjshack

My apologies for the delayed reply. As you can see, we've been very busy. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

The "Data Not Available" error normally happens when the data from 1Password has not been copied over Safari yet. To allow this to happen, you need to open the main 1Password application and unlock it. Please start 1Password and ensure it is unlocked. After unlocking 1Password, after 10-15 seconds all your data should be copied into Safari and you should be able to unlock 1Password.

If the problem persists, please try editing one of your saved items in 1Password. Sometimes this "kick starts" the sync process. After editing, wait 15 seconds and try again. In the event that this still happens, please include a Diagnostics Report in your reply; you can generate one from the Help > Troubleshooting menu.

Please give that a try and let us know how it turns out.

    Thanks

    Ben
