iphone to dropbox

<div class="IPBDescription">User starts with iphone/ipad then wants to sync with dropbox</div>Have been looking over the forum and iNet searches and have not come across an answer to this scenerio.

Started using 1password on my iPhone. Then wanted to transfer the iphone data file to dropbox and then use 1password on Mac or PC.

I was hoping that if on my iPhone I chose to sync with dropbox and no data file for 1password existed then the file would be created at dropbox from my iphone. Then I could easily startup the software on a computer and sync with dropbox.

Do I have to first backup the data from my iphone to a computer, then import it into 1password on a computer before I can sync?

  • Hi nc1536,

Sorry for any confusion here, at the moment Dropbox syncing has to be setup using 1Password for Mac or Windows in order to create the data file that your existing 1Password data on the iPhone will be synced into.

Both 1Password for Mac and Windows are available as a free-trial from http://agilebits.com/downloads and once you have one of these apps setup you can follow our Dropbox setup guide here:

Setup Dropbox using the desktop apps:

    http://help.agilebits.com/1Password3/configure_dropbox_on_mac.html (Mac)

    http://help.agilebits.com/1Password_Windows/setting-up-Dropbox-sync.html (Windows)

Configure your iPhone to sync with Dropbox:

    http://help.agilebits.com/1Password3/cloud_syncing_with_dropbox.html

Of course, we hope you'll like using 1Password on the desktop, and if you do please accept this link for a $10 discount on either version of 1Password when you use the following link to our online store:

    https://agilebits.com/store?d=iPhone2009

    Hope that helps,

  • Thanks Stu for your reply. And thanks for the discount coupon. I will continue to use 1password on my devices.

I have a feeling a good many people may start using a password manager on their portable devices before using them on a computer as the future unfolds. I didn't start using a PW manager until I started using my smartphone for everything because its difficult to enter by hand decent 12 digit passwords on a small device.

We're starting to see a shift towards mobile devices, people prefer laptops to desktops, many just use an iPad and most of us will carry our smartphone with us everywhere and rely on it for so many things.

We've always planned to make Dropbox syncing easy to setup on the iOS apps too, but we're also going to be looking into how iCloud will be able to help us give our users the best sync experience possible, providing it meeds our requirements of course.
  • Good choice. iCloud will have some weight.

By the way it was still very easy to make the sync occur the way I needed. After I installed 1password on my PC and created the data file I simply went to settings, moved it to dropbox, then went to my iPhone and chose to sync with dropbox and it worked. All the items I had spent time setting up on my iPhone did sync to the desktop software. I thought it was going to be more difficult.

It should do, though we're still looking into the Windows and Android side of things, we don't know the state of play with the APIs yet, hence why we're not formally announcing iCloud support until we're sere it will work.

That's good to hear, we tried to make everything as easy as possible. What tends to throw most people is that they think the blank data file on the desktop will overwrite the data on the iOS device, that would have been a terrible design choice.
