<div class="IPBDescription">Nightmare Safari problems HELP !</div>Hello !

I'm a long time 1P user.

I've been fighting a Safari problem for months and Apple can't figure it out.

This was with Snow Leopard and continues with Lion.

The problem is related to my mac user account. It does not happen when I login to another account.

What happens is when Safari tries to process a Login screen the page either does not load or the page is corrupted to character HTML left justified. Totally unformatted, no images.

Not all sites... Most login's are fine.....

But..

Very prominent sites. Apple me.com Amazon.com

me.com ... works fine for everything but iCal and Mail

Amazon works fine until you get the the User Account Page.

It happens regardless of using 1P or manual entry.

On Apr 23rd I spent an hr and a half working with several layers of Apple tech's. They saw the entire problem. Tried many different things...whacking plist, etc.

The last guy gave up and told me to email some log files to him and he would "send it to engineering".

I waited, and waited...... Never heard back from Apple. I happened to check my case# and saw that it was closed Apr 23. Very un-Apple like.

So I've lived with this problem not having another 3 hour to spend on the phone starting at square 1 until today when FireFox didn't work.

Between then and now I've replaced my iMac with a 15" MacBook Pro..... 3-4 weeks ago.

I set everything up. Check Safari. "IT WORKED with my account. Then, like a moron I ran migration assistant.

Square 1.

I totally reinstalled Safari... a couple times.

Sorry to be long winded.

I migrated to Lion and have had some "issues". 1P will not load the Software Update and every time I start it it asked if I want to install Safari extension.

I click yes and nothing happens.

I use Kaspersky. I bought MacKeeper I whacked any superfluous applications. I tried to eliminate any unneeded app support files in Libray/Application support.

I joined the Apple forum and found a couple of post several months old with similar problems but no solutions or return/updated posts.

I went back To mobile.me and tried to log into mail.

Then I saw IT.

I went digging in Safari and noticed in the lower left corner an error message.

"9 Errors loading the page" Click Windows / Activity

All https related errors. static1...static2 etc. To the right was a Red message for each error "Invalid Certificate" but the message is truncated.

I thought I'd try regenerating Keychains and such. I knew that could turn into a a horror story so I tried not to do too much.

So here I am. You guys are the https experts.

Perhaps the 1P db is corrupt?

I can only use 1P to look up ID's etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Genius bar appt in an hour.

I tried that before in April or so.

I'm not optimistic.

Screen shots are attached.

Thanks,

Luke

    Hi est1ad,

Welcome to the forums. I'm not convinced this is at all 1Password related, but I'd be happy to try and help if we can. My first suggestion, and the only thing that comes to mind at the moment, is to check your date and time settings and make sure they are correct (correct time zone, correct year, etc). SSL certificates have begin and end dates for which they are valid. If your clock were to be off by a year, for example, that would definitely cause the problem you outlined.

    Hi Ben,

Thanks for the reply and suggestion.

I use the time.apple.com to handle date and time.

I was in keychain and the cert dates will outlive me.

    Things are very sketchy.

As I suspected the "Genius Bar" could do nothing.

In fact they could not get my MacBook Pro to access the web via there store network.

This was the entire hour I was there. She never got to look at the problem.

    That was a new one.

Now I'm home and I'm typing this via my network. No problem.

I've spent too much time on this problem and even if I cleared it up I would never have confidence in the IO/S install.

As such, I'm backed up to Time Capsule (yea I know) and I'm now manually moving my files to LaCie drive as good measure.

I'm going to wipe the drive put Snow Leo on, a whole bunch of updates then Lion.

I will not be using Migration Assistant!

All the apps are going to be installed fresh.

    I need Peace.

    Thanks again,

    Luke
  • WAIT A MINUTE !

    Ben,

I did not give your thought enough attention.

I was just about to logoff the forum and I notice my forum "Join Date" is yesterday at 8:58 PM

I just joined at noon today PST.

The system clock on my MAC is correct, But .... the forum / Safari time ?

As I said, it's way too sketchy for me now.

    I'm wiping.

    Let us know how it goes. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • Humpty Dumpty is back together again.

But I have some interesting permissions issues now.

    It's a Lion thing.

Every time a file is moved or deleted it asked for a password.

I have 2 "everyones" as owners of my old files.

    FYI:

Since 1P is cursing now I was going to start sharing my 1P data file with my wife....

    Via Dropbox....

    Then I read this:

    Hello est1ad,

Apparently you've done what all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't accomplish. Well done!

Regarding the "latest" Dropbox article, there are certainly some well publicized issues regarding Dropbox and every other "cloud" based solution. Security in the cloud is a very big deal for us all. Our data is stored in the cloud every day, regardless of whether it's a bank's cloud server or your 1Password data file.

Each of the articles highlights a security risk for "unencrypted" data stored with such a service, and for those of us who use Dropbox for more than our 1P data, there is much to be concerned with.

However, as this is the 1Password Forum, I will address only the 1P "angle". The important point to consider when thinking about using Dropbox to sync/share your 1Password data is this: Is your data file unencrypted at any time while it is in transit to/from your Dropbox account, and/or while it is stored on Dropbox's servers?

    Answer: NO!

Your data is encrypted prior to being sent to Dropbox. When needed for use, the encrypted data file is downloaded to your Mac, Windows machine, iPhone, iPad, Android, Win Phone 7, etc. The decryption takes place on your device within the local/client side 1Password application. So, even if someone hacked your Dropbox, or other cloud solution, they would have access only to your encrypted 1P data file. They would then have to figure out a way to crack your Master Password, which, if you use a strong one, will put the odds squarely in your favor.

I'm not an encryption expert, but AgileBits' own Jeff Goldberg is rather learned in the ways of the Force in that regard. He has published several security articles on our Blog that you may find interesting reading: Jeff's Blog Posts

Hopefully, he'll assuage your fears enough to for you to feel comfortable sharing your 1P data with your wife. Then again, if you're just looking for a reasonable excuse "not" to share your data, you should probably stick with the NetworkWorld article you mentioned. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
