1Password freezes on quit

dpenny
dpenny Junior Member
I am running version 3.7.2 (build 31099) on Mac OS X 10.7 (build 11A511a) and every time I try to quit the application it hangs with the SPOD and I have to force quit. I can not find any information in the console regarding this freeze. It occurs every time I try to quit the application. Please advise on how to troubleshoot this issue.

Thanks,

Doug

Sorry for the trouble, Doug. Do you have 1Password in your System Preferences > Users & Groups > [Your account] > Login Items list? If so, please remove it from there and restart your Mac (or log out and log back in) and you should be sorted. Remember, it's not necessary for 1Password to be running to use it. Most folks rarely run the application itself, preferring to interact with it via the web browser extensions.

Please let us know if that doesn't help, and we'll go from there.

Thanks for the reply Nik. No, I do not have 1Password in my Login items. This was a new install on a new machine pre-loaded with Lion. It works somewhat fine in the browser, but when I actually open the application to edit a serial number or secure note I can not close the application without it freezing and getting a SPOD. I then have to force quit the app.

This is also happening to me, every time I try to quit the 1Password application. I don't have it in my login items, and I just updated to 3.7.2 (build 31099). I'm also running Lion.

    Hi,

I really don't know what could be causing this. There was a bug in version 3.6.5 that sometimes lead to this behavior, but that's been fixed ages ago (and by ages I mean one week, but it feels like ages).

Because this happened when you upgraded to Lion, I'm thinking that 1Password's preference file may have been corrupted in the process. So I'd like to ask you to remove your 1Password preferences file (instructions below) and then relaunch 1Password. You may need to re-install your license information when you start with a fresh preferences file, so try to have that information at hand.

Because we are going to trash your preferences file, you should first go through 1Password > Preferences to make a note of things that you would like to reset once you start over with a fresh preferences file.

Once that's all taken care of, Quit 1Password and then

    1) Go to Finder

    2) Choose Go > Go to Folder… in the menu bar

    3) Type or paste "~/Library/Preferences" (without the quotes)

    4) Press return or click Go

Now in that folder you will see a file called ws.agile.1Password.plist Drag that file to your Desktop or some other location in case we need to get it back again.

Now restart 1Password. If your 1Password data is on Dropbox or if it is in the default location then 1Password will find it automatically. Otherwise, you may need to tell it where to find your 1Password.agilekeychain.

Anyway, once you've restarted, you should have a fresh Preferences file. Quit 1Password and see if the problem still exists.

Please give that a try and let me know how it goes.

    Cheers,

I just tried this, and the problem is persisting... it is also happening when I hit the "lock" icon in the upper left of the application.

This was a clean install on a brand-new Lion machine, not an upgrade. There was no migration of files or transfer of the preferences... new install on new machine. Just to be sure, I went ahead and deleted the preference file anyway and am still experiencing the same problem.
  • Alright, the problem seems to have magically disappeared on mine... not sure what I did to change anything though. I restarted after deleting the preferences file, and I also disabled the extensions on Safari (and closed it), then downloaded and installed the newest version of 1Password from the website. After that, it seems to work.

I just wanted to let you know that 1password now hangs on shutdown and I have to force quit the app. I'm running Version 3.7.2 (build 31099) on a MacPro running Mac OS X Lion 10.7 (11A511).

Let me know if you have a workaround.

    Cheers,

    Matt H.

UPDATE: I downloaded the app again and reinstalled it. It works well know. I appreciate the Dropbox syncing, makes reinstalling the app painless. If the problem occurs again, I will take a sample and send it to you. Unfortunately all I have are crash logs, or ".hangs" as they are cleverly named.

Thanks for the update! I'm thinking that deleting the preferences file was the "magic" here so if it should happen again please start with that by itself first and let us know so we can track this issue down. It doesn't happen in our lab so we're limited in knowing where to look.

We appreciate hearing what you've tried, and I'm sorry it's still a problem for you. Could you send us a process sample of the application during the problem? To take a process sample, launch the Activity Monitor application (found in /Applications/Utilities/) and select the 1Password process in the process list. When you observe the problem condition, click the Sample Process button. Save the report and email it directly to us at support@agilebits.com, and please include a link to this thread so we can "connect the dots".

I completely deleted the application from my computer, deleted the presences file, and disabled and uninstalled the extension. I then restarted my computer and downloaded the latest version from the website. After installing this version and the extension, 1Password is now working as expected.

    Thanks for the update, dpenny!

I'm curious if all the steps were necessary or if just upgrading to the latest version would have resolved it.

If anyone else is having the problem, please try the latest beta and let me know if you are still having the problem.

    Cheers,
  • I just have this problem with latest version 3.8.1 on Mac OS X Lion since yesterday.

Each time I tried to lock 1password, the application freezes and I have to force quit.

Edit : I just deleted the library preferences file .plist and .lockfile) + restart and it works now <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

I have the same problem. The program hangs and I have to force quit. I've tried deleting preferences, but the problem persists. Previously solve it reinstalled, but has come back the problem.

    Waiting for a proper solution.

    Thanks.
  • Same problem here. I've mailed a process sample to support.

  • Hi,

I haven't tried your fixes but thought I would first give you some insight. I'm running 10.7.1 (build 11B26) and after having trouble with 1password finally checked to install the newest version (thought it had automatically updated). According to the updater I was five updates behind (if that helps). I'm now running 1password Version 3.8.2 (build 31121) with the library being on dropbox.

I did add some files/pictures to the notes section, something which I haven't previously done. Maybe there lies the culprit? It did tell me that I should try to attach a smaller file (>4MB text was different but just deleted the file and shrank it <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />

Since then I cannot quit 1password, it freezes every time and needs to be force quit. BUT all my files are still there and can be accessed.

I'll try your fix and get back to you.

    Cheers
  • So downloaded newest beta: Version 3.8.3.BETA-1 (build 31123)

Still same problem (I have not cleaned out preferences) I also cannot lock the 1password top left corner.

Attached the sample process you requested.

Now I'll delete pref. files. Think that's all I can help but if there is anything else just drop me a line.

OK... moved pref file, started 1password, was asked if I wanted to use dropbox database, said yes... Seamless BUT still if I click the lock icon or try to quit 1password it crashes ;-(

    thanks for the help

Thank you for the process sample!

It seems that 1Password is trying to securely erase the temporary folder used for attachments on exit and something causes it to freeze.

Please see if you have this folder:

    ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/AttachmentsCache

If you do, try to delete AttachmentsCache.
  • Hi roustem,

This is why I like small developers! Thanks for screening the forums even on a Sunday <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' /> You nailed it, deleted the AttachmentsCache folder and my problem has gone away. If I can help others which are having quit problems by supplying logs just give me a shout.

Otherwise thanks and looking forward to keeping an eye out for your upcoming products.
  • Thanks for the update, phillyman, glad to hear Roustem's tip got you up and running.

I don't think we need the logs at the moment, but Roustem may be in touch if he does, I know he's got quite a lot on this plate right now, thanks for the offer regardless of if we need them or not.
