Two quirks in Knox 2.1.5 (155)

I'm still running Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro. The recent update of Knox to 2.1.5 (155) introduced two quirks:

I now must enter my password for each vault two times to open it.

The vault icon has changed to a generic white drive, away from the orange/gray briefcase icon.

Any help in addressing these issues would be appreciated.

Comments

  • Same here. The vaults icon looks like the attached pic. Have to type in the password two times too.

    Hi guys,

The white icon is not exactly a quirk. We had to remove it as it was causing an issue on Lion. We do hope to bring it back later in a future update, I do not have a specific timeframe.

As for the two password prompts, does that continue to happen for the same vault after the initial two prompts? If it doesn’t happen again, it is likely due to our automatic vault upgrade process. This will happen twice for each vault on your list, just one time.

Please let me know if it is still showing two prompts after the initial two for the same vault.
  • Thanks for this info. I have tested all my vaults, and now I only have to enter the password once, so everything is ok. As for the icon, I know it is a small thing, but the briefcase icon was a nice bit of visual feedback. I'd love to see it back asap.

    Many thanks for the help!

Hi Michael, thanks for the update I agree with you, I love our Knox icon more than the white one. I’ll nudge our developer once in a while to bring this back.

If anybody is curious, the vault upgrade process is required to make it Lion compatible. In order to complete the upgrade, we have to open the vault (first password prompt), make changes, save it by closing it and then reopen it for the user (second password prompt). This is all done in the background.

    Hi,

I had to reinstall Knox today and now it shows a generic external drive icon instead of the Knox icon for my vaults. It seems to do this all the time (not the erratic behaviour sometimes right icon/sometimes wrong icon others have reported earlier). I created a few new vaults to test this and they all get the generic icon. Is there a way to fix this?

  • Hey Andreas,

I hope you don't mind, but moved your topic to a similar thread.

Please review Mike's comments above for more details regarding the generic icon.

    Cheers!

I don't recall this removal of the icon being mentioned in the release notes, only a reference to fixing the unmount issue on Lion.

So, today on Snow Leopard I:

Mount a vault

Watch it suddenly unmount by itself (WTF??)

Manually mount it again

Notice the Knox Vault icon that was there on the first mount is now gone, replaced with the standard icon

Start to wonder at what got corrupted by the unexpected disappearance of the volume
If this was an intentional sequence of events, it was unexpected and unwelcome, and it's only because I thought to check the forums that I haven't written this off as "Yet Another Knox Bug" and restored from backup (which would take a while as my vaults are rather large.)

This, and the continuing awful beachball-spinning experience of the Knox UI (seriously, 100% CPU and spinning beachball for at least five seconds every time I click on something?) really makes me wonder if this software is worth the discounted price I paid for it, let alone the full price. It was getting to the stage where the icons were the only value-add of this software beyond just using Disk Utility, and now they're gone too.

Guys, I wouldn't be ranting so much about this if my experience with 1Password on Mac and Windows wasn't as good as it is. But that experience led me to believe that Knox would be a quality product too. It's not. I'm hoping you'll manage to get it there.

    Rant over. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Updated: Just saw MikeT's post above that I somehow missed about the "Automatic" process that happens "in the Background." Automatic, maybe, but definitely not in the background, or I wouldn't have panicked about data corruption.

    Hey draenan,

The "beach balling" is not normal behavior. It sounds like there is something peculiar going on in your setup. I would love to get this resolved for you.

Please send an e-mail to support@agilebits.com and attach the following file:
~/Library/Logs/Knox/Knox.log
For some users, this file may not exist. Don't be alarmed if that's your situation as well.

I'll also need to look at the other logs in the Console.app while you attempt to reproduce the problem with Knox. You can get these logs as follows:

    1. Launch Console.app which can be found in the /Applications/Utilities folder.

    2. Click the "Clear Display" button on the toolbar.

    3. Launch Knox and reproduce the problem. Then wait 15 seconds to let the Console refresh.

    4. Press Command-A to select all the logs and Command-C to copy them to your clipboard.

    5. After starting a reply to this email, press Command-V to paste the logs.

In your e-mail, please include a link to this thread so that we may more quickly match the files to your specific issue.

    Thanks!

Bringing this up again. Any news about the Knox icon instead of the white one?

    Hi Christoph,

Sorry, no, we haven't been able to resolve this yet. We might not be able to bring back the icon but we'll keep trying to find a way around the issue. Right now, this isn't a high priority because we have bigger things to work on for Knox and 1Password.
