I know you guys are just getting started on a windows version.....

Hey, fleebailly33.
I love Linux (though I switched to OS X about years back). And Linux is great fun to develop for if you are creating something that is to be distributed as source code. But it's not that easy when producing closed binaries. Furthermore, 1Password is about great user experience and feeling native to the system. So we'd have to work out whether we would shoot for something that works well with Gnome or KDE or whatnot.
As David said, "we never say never". After all, our official line on Windows was that we were focusing on OS X support. But I don't anticipate anything for Linux.
Cheers,

well personally that is why I think just a firefox extension would be a good idea. as long as it could sync with dropbox folder it would be enough.Flag 0

Ah! Sorry I overlooked that in your first post. That is a very interesting idea. To my knowledge, there are no plans in this direction, but that certainly makes the idea more feasible.
Thanks for that, fleebaily33.

I'm an avid 1Password user, and recommend it to friends, family and colleagues. My home is solely Mac-based after getting rid of the final PC a couple of years ago. But, I do work on Linux at work, and while 1Password's ability to access my encrypted keychain via Dropbox is great, it's not the most natural process. Don't get me wrong, I love being able to do that, so thanks for providing it!
An extension or plugin to Chrome or Firefox would be fantastic if it could access the keychain in Dropbox, and should result in a more seamless experience. Creating new passwords would be super, but simply being able to seamlessly access the ones I have now would be great.
I have no plans to leave OS X at home, but better integration at work would be most helpful.Flag 0 -
Thanks for taking time to add your comments, jdilley.
We're not ignoring requests for implementations for other browsers and other platforms; it's just that we're a small team and have to prioritize new development as best we can. It helps us to know what our customers want, so keep the posts coming!Flag 0 -
Hi - I've successfully installed 1password (1.0.96 beta) on ubuntu (10.04) using wine (1.1.42) and it runs perfectly - infact pretty much looks / runs like a native programme which I was extremely impressed with.
However, I did have some trouble with the dropbox sync - whilst it created the "1password.agilekeychain" folder in dropbox for some reason it didn't create the hidden config file ".ws.agile.1Password.settings". This meant that 1password pro for iphone kept coming up with the error "data file not found" on dropbox sync. I only found this out by installing 1password on a windows partition and setting up dropbox sync from there which created the config file in the dropbox root folder - on booting back into ubuntu everything works fine.
So - for linux users out there, there is a solution for using dropbox on your desktop - install it with wine. The route that I took in getting it to work seems to be working fine - I haven't tested manually creating the text / config file ".ws.agile.1Password.settings" with contents 1Password.agilekeychain manually in the dropbox root, but I don't see any reason why this wouldn't work as it seems to just be a pointer to the keychain
Obviously firefox integration doesn't work, but hopefully we will see a stable chrome or FFox extension in the near future!!
Thank you Agile guys! Whilst I love open source software, this is truely an awesome product that (provided it continues to work with wine), I will definitely be purchasing when it comes out of beta.
(Mods - Maybe add this post as a sticky somewhere for linux users?? - I will continue to update the beta version and will report back if anything breaks <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' /> )Flag 0 -
Mike, thanks for that very interesting post!
I feel compelled to say that, while we applaud individual initiative as enthusiastically as anyone, we can't provide support for folks running 1Password for Windows on other operating systems.
I know...it's stating the obvious, but at least it's stated now. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />Flag 0 -
Just signed up to throw in my support for at least a Firefox extension. Would love the full program, but would settle for accessing my passwords from my personal mac, to my work ubuntu. Love this program, and glad to see you're making a windows version. I've been recommending it to all my mac friends, will soon start recommending it to my windows friends, and would love to be able to recommend it to my Ubuntu friends. Thanks.Flag 0

How about a deamon based approach – have a simple daemon in the background that's accessed by various browser plugins via JSON or sth. like that? Should be much less work than a full 1Password GUI and be portable to about any platform.
If a GUI for managing passwords is needed, it could be served as an HTML5 webapp by a webserver built into the daemon.Flag 0 -
Hi Guys,
I came to 1Password via iPhone and later iPad App, in the Beginning as a secure wallet on my devices. With the new dropbox functionality I bought a Windows beta license and am using 1Password in a VirtualBox on a Linux Ubuntu Host, which works quite okay for me in combination with 1PasswordAnywhere. But the fact that iPhone and iPad entrys are not added via Dropbox sync to 1PasswordAnywhere is a little bit annoying and that would be a reason for a Firefox and/or Chromium extension.
So thanks for the good work and keep going <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

<img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_sweating.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='(sweat)' /> We intend to fix that in a future release of the 1Password apps for iOS devices.

Hello!
I'd like to reiterate comments about how great 1Password is. I primarily use Mac OS X, and 1PasswordAnywhere has been *great* on my Ubuntu workstation at work, and it got even better with the introduction of seamless Dropbox integration.
I can only speak for myself, but 1PasswordAnywhere does everything I need in Linux. I don't have a great desire to add new passwords in Linux, so the web app works wonderfully. I've even added a shortcut with a 1Password icon that executes the following:
google-chrome --allow-file-access-from-files -app=file:///path/to/Dropbox/1PasswordSync/1Password.agilekeychain/1Password.html
which pops up a very slick looking 1Password "desktop client."
The only thing that I'd really like, for Ubuntu, that doesn't yet exist, is a nice Google Chrome extension for 1P. It seems like the Mac OS X Google Chrome extension simply reads the agilekeychain file, no? If this is the case, can the extension (which INSTALLS but doesn't function properly in Ubuntu) simply be told to read a Dropbox-sync'd agilekeychain file? Just basic form-filling functionality (as in the Mac Chrome extension) would be fantastic.
Keep up the good work!

Welcome to the forum, C.o.D.!
Note that, in addition to the Internet Explorer and Firefox extensions always available, extensions for Chrome and Safari are already on the list of enhancements planned for future releases of 1Password for Windows.Flag 0 -
Hi all,
I have been a happy 1Password user since the beta of the 2.0 days and have purchased multiple licenses across most of your platforms. As a loyal user who recommends this software to anyone who will listen let me say, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE MAKE A LINUX VERSION! Being that Apple has decided to stop supporting 3rd party development environments (e.g. JAVA!!!) I will probably leave the MAC and move over to Linux and would love to be able to continue to use your wonderful program!

Thanks for your feedback, juju12,
We're certainly not saying a Linux version of 1Password will never come, but we're a fairly small company with somewhat limited resources and we need to use these wisely. As stated earlier in the thread, many users find 1PasswordAnywhere works very well for their needs on Linux right now.
If there are any plans for Linux support we will, of course, be posting them on the forums for everyone to see if and when we have something to announce, but there's no promises on if or when this may be.
Thanks again,Flag 0 -
I've reached this old thread looking for information about 1password running on Ubuntu system. I've to agree with the idea that it could be amazing to have at least a Chrome extension that be able to access via Dropbox to my passwd database. There is any progress on this issue? there is plans to add support for 1password using browser extensions without the need of the main app installed?

Welcome to the forums, fidoboy!
At this time the extensions are not actually standalone products and rely on platform-specific hooks to interact with the main 1Password application and your locally stored data file. We are probably closer to standalone, cross-platform extensions than we have ever been before, but we are not there right now.
Consider taking advantage of 1PasswordAnywhere as many of our cross-platform users are doing. Also, we have lots of folks who run 1Password for Windows in WINE. This is not supported but, aside from the lack of browser integration in Linux, it runs about as well in Linux as Windows.
I don't have anything further to announce, and I don't want to get anyone's hopes up too high, but this is something we know a number of 1Password users are interested in. Thank you for adding your vote!Flag 0
