1password not recognizing master password

tthompson
edited August 2011 in Mac
I have three computers that I work between. My work machine works just fine with 1password but my two home computers, since upgrading to safari 5.1 will not recognize my master password. I have never changed my password so I am not sure what is happening. I am syncing everything between dropbox.

Any suggestions?

    Hi tthompson,

    Welcome to the forums. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Please try these instructions: Extension Data Does Not Match the Main Application

    Thanks

    Hi,

So uninstalling and reinstalling the extension had no effect on the problem. 1password still won't except my correct master password on my lion machine, while my work station machine that is snow leopard will except it.

I just tried the different keyboard layouts under the international preferences tab in osx, still nothing.

There is an issue related to Private Browsing mode. Would that apply to your situation? Can you attach a screenshot of the error you get when you enter your master password and press Return?

I am not in private browsing mode.

It just gives me the incorrect password error.

Just to check, are you using 'actual' Safari, or one of the WebKit nightly builds?

    Please let me know,

And you say you are able to unlock the main 1Password application on the same machine without trouble...?

Please uninstall the Safari extension and then update to the latest beta of 1Password (3.7.5.BETA-3) by checking the box to "Include Beta versions" (1Password > Preferences > Updates) and then checking for updates. Once You are running the latest beta, reinstall the Safari extension carefully following each step in the User Guide. The specific steps are all important (especially if you have been having some difficulty getting things working), so be sure to not skip any.

I hope that helps. Please let me know.
  • @khad - I did all of that and i still can't get in.

I get the incorrect password error, and yes it is the correct password.

It still works fine on my work computer but nothing seems to work on this brand new mac book air with lion.

    Any other ideas?
  • THIS HAPPENED TO ME AFTER I UPGRADED, SAME.

TRY SETTING YOUR CAPS LOCK ON, AND THEN TYPE YOUR PASSWORD, THIS WORKED FOR ME, I GOT IN.

    HOPE IT HELPS
  • Good suggestion, 11Rick, though it looks like you forgot to turn off your caps-lock <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

The reason this may work is that with 1Password 3.5.9 and a few versions before there was a 'feature' we put in place that was designed to automatically try the inverse case for your password, so if you typed 'torchwood' but your password was actually 'TORCHWOOD' then 1Password would invert the case and as such it would be accepted. Sounds great, right?

The problem came when users tried to enter this on Windows, Android and iOS, genuinely believing their password was 'torchwood' and because the other apps weren't automatically inverting the case, the password is rejected and so we removed this feature, but of course users would still expect 'torchwood' to work when in fact only 'TORCHWOOD' would be accepted.

That probably isn't the case here though, given that tthompson can unlock 1Password itself, just not the extension, is that correct?
  • Hey guys.

@Stu - No, it wouldn't let me in the app or the extension.

So just typing it in all caps worked...WTF. When is this getting fixed?
  • Ah, thanks for clarifying.

It's not getting fixed, your password is actually in all caps, but previously 1Password was automatically 'flipping' this for you when you entered it in lower case. The best option is to go 1Password > Preferences > Security and use the 'Change Master Password' option and enter your password in all caps in the current password field then enter it in lower caps in the new password fields.

As I mentioned, this was removed because it was causing too much confusion across other 1Password platforms.
