Support for folders not present in Safari 5.1 extension

As a longtime user of 1Password (since 2006), I am not at all happy with the direction Agile has taken with 1Password for Lion. Originally, I thought Agile was simply scrambling to put something together to give the program some functionality with the newly available Lion; it now appears important features I have come to take for granted have disappeared.

Go and Fill Login
The Go and Fill Login menu previously available is nowhere to be found. Clicking on a menu item was so easy as it brought me to the Web site and then automatically entered login information.

Now, after entering the Master Password, I need to click on the All Logins icon and then type the name I have given to the site. I then need to select the correct site from the list returned. Too much mouse (or trackpad) / keyboard back and forth.
Save Login in 1Password
This feature has been dumbed down to allow saving only the login information and editing Web site title. Replace old login or save in a folder is gone. The 1Password app needs to be opened to accomplish these tasks.
I would like a response to my concerns.

Thank you…

Lew

    Hi Lew,

Go & Fill is available with the keyboard shortcut Cmd+Option+\

It can be done with either the keyboard exclusively, the mouse exclusively, or a combination. No back and fourth required.

The issue of folders has been discussed in a number of threads, including this one. We're working on integrating folders into the new extension and hope to have something for them figured out soon.

    Hi Ben,

    Thank you for your response.

Go and Fill, whether by clicking the 1P icon with a mouse or by using the keyboard shortcut just isn't the same as it was under OSX 10.6 and earlier. Hopefully Agile will be able to bring back the menus.

Care to comment on increasing the feature set in Save Login in 1Password? Will Agile be adding the missing features?

From what I understand the APIs for contextual menus in Safari 5.1 are relatively limited, and while we are looking into what functionality we can bring back with updates to the extension, it's likely impossible for us to bring back some features.

With the latest updates to 1Password and the extension you can also use 'Go & Fill' from within 1Password itself by double-clicking a Login item, or by using the 'Go & Fill' menu from the Dock icon.

As with the rest of the extension we've had to completely rewrite our 'Save Login' system to work with Safari 5.1, which has seen some major changes meaning we can't go back to the old method of integration, and so there are a few features are are missing, but we're by no means ruling out bringing these back.

    Hope that helps,

    Hi Stew,

The ability to invoke the Go & Fill menu from the Dock icon is something I was not aware of. Thank you for pointing that out. It should work quite well for me.

    Thanks...

I find it quite a handy little feature, though it does mean having the 1Password app open and unlocked, but given the nature of my day, I tend to have 1Password open all the time.

I apologize for the misspelling, Stu. As one whose name is quite often incorrectly spelled Lou, I should have been more careful.

  • I have no problems with Lion and Firefox 5.0.1.

1Password works fine for me, as always.
  • Can I just add my 2 cents worth. Unfortunately I agree.

Dont get me wrong Agile, your service is second to none (big ups to Dave) on the net and as a user for 5 years, I've generally been very happy, but at present this is not the case and I have never felt the need to join the forums until now.

I have had an awful time trying to get Safari 5.1 to work with 3.7.b10, as it appears many have. It seems to be working (not as I'm used to or happy with), at present. I could only imagine how someone with little or no computer knowledge would have got by, I only did by trolling through the forums until I tried all of the options listed. I am on Snow Leopard, not Lion as yet.

The user interface is not user friendly and to me doesn't feel as secure. I have not been prompted for my master password once, even for my banking websites which scares me more than a little.

Unlike others, I really like the feel of safari and prefer to use it, hopefully you will be able to look at restoring the old right click functions of 1Password and the ease of use, not a fan at all of the drop down menu. If I wanted to have to copy and paste my user names and passwords I could do that in a word document and one that is hidden, not right there in my browser.

Like I said, my 2 cents.

Thanks, Jay, your 2 cents are worth several thousand units of currency to us, we wouldn't be where we are today without feedback and support from our users.

I'm sorry to hear the new extension isn't to you're liking, we know it's a big change for a lot of users, particular those who've been with us for quite some time. It's a huge change for us as well, we're having to recreate all of our work of the last 5 years in a new Safari extension, so there's new ways to do things and some limitations, but in the long run we're confident this is the best decision.

I know the guys are working hard to improve the setup experience for the new extension, as well as fixing some of the most frustrating problems. We just need a bit of time to make sure everything works, the last thing we want is to release an update that should fix issues only to find that it causes more.
The user interface is not user friendly and to me doesn't feel as secure. I have not been prompted for my master password once, even for my banking websites which scares me more than a little.
The extension should be respecting your auto-lock settings just like the old one did. If it's not, it sounds like you may have an out-of-date version of 1Password and / or the extension. To get the latest updates please go to 1Password > Check for Updates from within 1Password which should prompt you to download the latest version, currently 3.7.2 at the time of writing.

Once that's done, please update the Safari extension to the latest version by performing a manual update within Safari > Preferences > Extensions as we detail at the bottom of this guide:

    http://help.agilebits.com/1Password3/safari_5.1_install_update.html

With some of the new changes in the update, there are few extra steps to follow. First of all, please go to Help > Troubleshooting > Restart Agent within 1Password and finally restart Safari to ensure the extension is properly reloaded.

I'm a huge Safari fan myself, it's my main browser at the moment and while I'd love to see it gain a true 'OmniBar' like Chrome, it still works very well for my needs.

The right-click contextual menus relied on the technology behind our old extension, which isn't as well supported with Safari 5.1 and it looks like Apple are ready to kill it, in fact they did in developer builds of Lion, and so we've had to move forward.

We're looking into how we can bring back some form of contextual menu support while working within the Safari extensions API to provide a stable extension. The beauty of the new extension is that we can push new updates when they're available and actually there's a lot more power under the hood for us to play with.

I hope that helps, and thanks again for your feedback.

    Hi Stu,

Since you pointed it out to me, the Go and Fill menu on the dock icon is a good interim workaround. However, I wonder if these menus could be placed on the menubar if they can't be invoked by the toolbar icon. I think they would be much handier in that location...not requiring a right-click or the dock to be visible.

    Lew,

Do you mean having 1Password as a menu-bar app or having a menu-bar option in Safari?

The second, Safari, option isn't possible because of the limitations with the Safari extensions framework, but a 1Password menu-bar item could be interesting, though I'm not sure how easily we could put this into place.

Also, I wanted to mention another neat little trick, if you're constantly using the same Logins via 'Go & Fill' you may want to make some '1Click Bookmarks' to help out:

    http://help.agilebits.com/1Password3/oneclick_bookmarks.html

Let me know what your thinking was and we can certainly look into some options.

How do you do this with the mouse only? If you are going to tell me I have to scroll through my list of hundreds of passwords forget it. Losing the folder functionality (the "core" feature for me in 1Password) makes the mouse only approach a nightmare.

I hate having to go to the keyboard and the click-type-click-click functionality of the new extension is a big step backwards.

I would appreciate it if someone could tell us how us mouse only users are supposed to use 1Password effectively to login to sites. Right now, I don't see it.

Are these things secure? Will they work if I haven't entered my password into 1Password? if someone made off with my computer, would they have unfettered access to all my accounts via the 1-click bookmarks?

If they are secure, great. If they aren't secure, what good are they?

Could you please elaborate on how they are supposed to work?

    Of course.
Will they work if I haven't entered my password into 1Password?
That wouldn't be secure. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />

    Great!

1Click Bookmarks are just another way to access the Go & Fill feature. You can do so by (1) double-clicking a Login the main application, (2) right-clicking the Dock icon, (3) using 1Click Bookmarks, or (4) via the browser extension (which can also be invoked using the Option-Command-\ keyboard shortcut and navigated entirely via the keyboard if you're into that sort of thing).

If we can be further assistance, please let us know.

We are always here to help!

I was thinking of an icon in the desktop menubar, not within Safari. Agile used to have an app called AllMenues, or something like that, that used to sit on the menubar. Something such as that would work if it would take the user to the web site and enter login info.
The second, Safari, option isn't possible because of the limitations with the Safari extensions framework, but a 1Password menu-bar item could be interesting, though I'm not sure how easily we could put this into place.
I'm beginning to get the picture that we're not going to see that with your new extension implementation. Too bad...

I forgot all about 1Click Bookmarks. It would have limited use unless we could drag the entire login database, including folders, to the Bookmarks Bar.

As it stands now, logins added would not update to the Bookmarks bar. It would be a pain to have to manually update logins on the Bookmark Bar.

We did indeed used to have AllBookmarks, it's taking a break at the moment while we look into it's future, it wouldn't have worked with the new extensions as we changed the way 'Go & Fill' was implemented. Adding a menu-bar app for 1Password is certainly an option, but not something we could put in place overnight, but I know it's something we're looking into for the future
I forgot all about 1Click Bookmarks. It would have limited use unless we could drag the entire login database, including folders, to the Bookmarks Bar.
They weren't really designed to give you access to all of your Logins, they're designed for quick access to a select number of sites, just like your browser bookmarks.

Do bare with us, we're not ruling out adding back folder navigation to the extension, but the focus right now has to be on the core functionality.
