Damaged or incomplete application [Resolution: Download fresh copy of Knox]

<div class="IPBDescription">Can't open application.</div>I have been using Knox happily on my Macbook Air for the last few months. I have the paid version.

Upon trying to open Knox, I got a pop-up window that asked if I wanted to update Knox, and I said yes.

Now, the icon in my task bar is broken/missing, and when I click on the application it says, "You can't open the application Knox because it may be damaged or incomplete."

I've been working on a book, and the only copy I have is in my vault. That's ten thousand words currently unreachable. I will never in a million years use this application again, of course, but I'd like to know why this happened and how I can fix it. Along with those 10k words are journals going back to the early 90's. To lose all of that is just....unthinkable.

If I download a new version and install it, will it see my old files?

Thanks,

- Hollie

I'm really sorry for the trouble here, but don't worry Hollie, while Knox itself won't open your actual data is perfectly safe. Knox creates standard OS X sparsebundle images, secured of course, and so if you navigate to your vaults, which should be in ~/Documents/Knox by default, you can double-click the vault and OS X will prompt you for your password and let you open this and retrieve your book and your journals.

It sounds like something happened in the update process that halted the download and so gave you a damaged copy of Knox. The best option in this case is to download the latest version manually from http://agilebits.com/downloads and then replace your current, damaged, copy of Knox with the newly downloaded one.

    I hope that helps,
  • Oh thank you! This coincided with my Mac programmer husband walking in the door with Thai food and telling me not to panic, that he thinks blah blah blah - insert what you just posted. It was great to get your reply too, because that validated his.

My files are now available, and my calm has returned (the Thai food helped too). Greg also asked that perennial question asked of all the non-geek-minded partners of programmers: WHERE IS YOUR BACKUP? Creating one now.....

So if you're admin, you must know - why the Contact Us page with all the "please email us we love it" stuff but no email address listed?

    Thanks again!

Hi Hollie, I’m glad everything turned out okay for you.

We will update the contact page soon after everything calms down. Right now, this forum is the best way to contact us while we try to process 2000+ emails backlog (Lion and Safari 5.1 releases at the same time).

Here’s the actual contact us page we use. You can always contact us at support@agilebits.com
