1P 3.7.5 / Snow Leopard: Cannot empty trash [Resolved by uninstalling/reinstalling Safari extension]

When I delete logins or items they go to the trash, but if I issue the "empty trash" command, they disappear for a second and then they reappear.

I don't know how old is this bug, I noticed it today for the first time.

1Pass 3.7.5 on Snow Leopard, Dropbox, rebuilt data file, not using cache, no multi thread.

Same here. I first noticed this early today. I don't delete very often so I don't know how long this has been an issue.

    Thanks for the report, omar.

This was a problem that we recently fixed. I see you have the latest 1Password version, but you also need to have the latest version of the Safari extension as well . Please go to the Safari > Preferences > Extensions window, click on "Updates" in the bottom left hand corner, and then install the 1Password update.

Once updated, please restart Safari by using the Cmd-Option-Q keyboard shortcut (just Cmd-Q on Snow Leopard). This will clear any cache files Safari was using for the extension, but it will also close all your open windows so be sure to bookmark any sites you need.

After Safari restarts, emptying the Trash should be a permanent operation.

Please let us know how it turns out.
  • I already have 3.7.b16 and I restarted Safari (Snow Leopard, normal restart) but the problem persists.

    Thanks for the update, Omar.

Could you please try two things for me:

    1. Quit Safari entirely and then empty the trash. Do the items come back? If not, do they reappear when Safari starts?

    2. Try restarting the 1PasswordAgent process by using the Help > Troubleshooting > Restart Agent menu. Afterwards, try emptying the trash again and see if that helps.

It doesn't help, as soon as I start Safari I get all them back in the trash and also the last ones I deleted go back to their place in the Logins.

    Lion, 1P 3.7.5, extension 3.7 final.
  • I was having the same problem. Uninstalling the Safari extension (as was suggested in another thread) solved the problem. With DropBox sync, this meant uninstalling the Safari extension on ALL of my DropBox-connected machines. The problem didn't go away until I did that.

    Hey, Gilles!

Have you tried dm8v's suggestion of uninstalling/reinstalling the extension? That's how I was finally able to permanently get rid of emptied Trash items reappearing there when I had this problem.
  • I tried too and it worked, but it shouldn't happen at all, I would still consider it as minor bug <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Ok it worked this time

But the extension was re-installed a few times while I had the problem, and it did not do it

Thanks for the suggestion, i'll keep it in mind

Thanks for the updates, folks! It shouldn't happen again now that you are running the latest versions of 1Password and the Safari extension. Please let me know if it does, though.

Well it is happening again for me

Yes I managed to empty the trash (1P) after uninstalling the extension and re-installing again

But today the problem is back

    that,s with 1P 3.8.0 b1 and extension 3.7

Note: if this help, I had to reinstall Lion, yesterday, the deletion & re-installation of the extension was done prior re-installing Lion, maybe this is related
  • Did you restore from a Time Machine backup by any chance, Gilles?
  • This problem has not been fixed for me too. I continue to have items "magically" appear in the trash even after emptying it. I tried a nuclear option, removed the extension, flushed all the caches I could find, uninstalled 1Password including all support files I could find, and then reinstalled everything. And there is still 2 items that all of sudden reappeared in the trash after installing the extension - it was at least some progress as there were were many more that would reappear. But there is nothing I can seem to do now to make these two items go away unless I stop using the extension.

So since the Safari extension has not been very stable for me from the start, for now I have uninstalled it and will stay away from it. In the meantime, the empty trash issue is still there.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

I am able to reproduce this. I just emptied my trash and a number of the items came back. I'll pass this along to the developers. Thanks for your patience, folks.

Aha. Of course. Please uninstall the Safari extension, empty your trash, and then reinstall the extension. I was able to easily reproduce the issue 100% until I took those steps. Now everything works well.

Please let me know how it goes.

    Hello

I have a small variation relating to the same issue (trash keeps coming back)

I had 2 entries in the folder "generated passwords"

    I deleted them,

they went in trash, and I emptied the trash

after a few, log in log out, sign in 1P

the two files keep on reappearing not in the trash, but back in the "generated passwords" folder

    Odd !

I would think it realtes to the trash not really emptying

Opps just saw the title of this thread

I am on Lion, but 1P syncs through Dropbox with Snow Leopard computers, so it may be the same

unsure if this happens when I am on Snow Leopard, and then I see it on Lion

all computers do not run at the same time

so it can't be a conflict between them, as changes being done at the same moment
  • I have a theory on this, given that you're syncing two systems, I wonder if the Safari extension on the other system is sending the data back to the 1Password data file and hence being synced via Dropbox? Did you try uninstalling the extensions on both the Lion and Snow Leopard systems. then emptying the trash on one, make sure things sync, and then reinstalling the extensions?

The same was happening to me, with Snow Leopard. Also with Dropbox sync, but seems nothing to do with it. Just deleted the Safari Extension, emptied the trash, and reinstalled the Extension (from 1P itself, and it says it's a beta!). Everything working normally now.

I have two items in my 1Password trash [version 3.8]. I can empty the trash just fine using the contextual menu, but if I quit 1Password and relaunch it, the items reappear. I'm using Dropbox syncing, if that helps. Rebuilding data file, restarting agent, etc do not help.

    Anyone else?

I'm experiencing the same issue with 4 items persistently in the trash. I saw it ever since 1P 3.7.5 but didn't realize it was a problem until I saw the same 4 items in the trash every time. Using Mac OS X 10.7.1 and 1P 3.8.

I seemed to have stumbled across a workaround for this problem. Create a folder and move the contents of the trash to the folder. Delete the folder and when prompted, move items to the trash. Empty the trash. The items don't seem to reappear any longer. I hope this helps!

This issue has been addressed before. You can read several suggestions in the following thread:

    http://forum.agilebi...__fromsearch__1

(sorry, I don't know how to quote a thread efficiently)

Deleting the Safari Extension, quiting Safari, emptying 1Password trash, and reinstalling the Extension worked for me.

This was with Snow Leopard and 1Password 3.7.5. Perhaps it can work in your case ?

    Hey JMaF,

    Thanks for updating the thread!

As this issue appears to be resolved consistently by uninstalling/reinstalling the extension.

If other user continue to experience the problem, please let us know which versions of OS X, the 1Password app and the 1Password extension you are running.

    Thanks!
