1Password 3.8.1: Runaway CPU usage [Cause: HD Failing]
Hello,
Using 1Password 3.8.1.31019 with Lion 10.7.1 and noticing mds and mdworker owned by Root started behaving weirdly by running at 100% CPU. My MBP fan have been spinning like crazy! Confirm with @jaacob via Twitter because before the 3.8.1 update, I don't have this problem. I don't have Chrome running on this system. Please help!

I'm seeing the same thing on 10.6.8 with v 3.8.1, build 31115. I can use the 1Password app proper without issue, but the extension in Chrome (ext v 3.8.1.31019, Chrome v 13.0.782.112) is occasionally ramping to 100% CPU, with nothing happening if I click the "1P" icon in the Chrome toolbar and my fans up to 6200+ RPM. After approx 1-2 minutes, CPU usage drops to normal and the extension works fine in Chrome.Flag 0

mds and mdsworker are the helper processes for Spotlight. They are responsible for monitoring your hard drive for activity and updating a database with any changes. If they are using 100% CPU that could definitely affect 1Password, but I'm not sure I see how 1Password could be causing this issue (especially all of a sudden). Can you please confirm that if you uninstall 1Password the problem goes away?
There is a thread over at MacRumors about the mds process consuming 100% CPU as well (unrelated to 1Password): http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=377014
Thanks folks, and welcome to the forums. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I realised 1Password isn't a taxing CPU application nor having file writing changing frequently.
the reason I made a request of support at this forum is because 1Password is the last installed application on my machine.
Ben, I remove 3.8.1 then installed Version 3.7.5 (build #31106) and the fan is still going off crazy as we speak.
Do you manually moving 1Password 3.8.1 to the Trash or using a 3-party application to uninstall 1Password?
I realised that mds and mdsworker eating up CPU cycles is also an known issue within the Mac forums upon researching this problem. The application at fault ranging from Virtual Machine folders (Fusion, Parallels, VirtualBox). MS Office to Torrent downloader programs. Because I'm new to the platform I would like to know where can I check the command prompt and logs to show which mds and mdsworker is chewing on?
Also, does 1Password have a spotlight indexer plugin upon user install?

1Password does not have a Spotlight indexer plugin. I'm not aware of any commands that you can run to see where Spotlight is indexing.
I would suggest dragging the 1Password application to the trash, rather than using a 3rd party app. As someone whose name I've forgotten so elegantly put... "Apple didn't FORGET an uninstaller in OS X." These utilities will often delete all associated files with an application, including the database! You could very well lose all of your 1Password data and backups by using an application such as MacKeeper or AppZapper.Flag 0 -
Hello tonychsiu,
Thanks for updating the thread. I'm sorry to hear about your hard drive, but I am glad that at least you know the cause of the fan spinning issue.
Cheers!
