Weird problem with Knox
Hi guys,
I bought Knox yesterday and I am having a small problem (big for me since I am leaving my important data in your hands).
Here are the steps I am doing -- and I have two computers (1 work, 1 personal).
1) Turn on personal computer, installed Knox and add key.
2) Formatted an encrypted drive (WD 500GB), call it something like "Backup Name"
3) Drop some files
4) Turn off personal computer
5) Turn on work computer, plug the encrypted drive and typed password
6) Drop some new files
7) Rename the vault folder/driver (left click rename it to "Master Backup"
<img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/emoticon-0103-cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='8)' /> Turn off work computer
9) Back to personal computer, plug drive (Knox is not working behind)
10) Orange icon pops up (standard USB/HD icon). Open folder and click on the new Vault
11) I get the message: "The Vault " Master Backup" has been protected (...) enter password.
12) After entering password, I see the icon with the vault folder opening but I get another window asking for the password with the exact message
13) I typed the password again and I get the error message "No such file or directory"
14) It re-asks me..... if I click cancel eveything is fine, I can go to the vault folder already opened with the first password request.
I have repeated this three or four times and the same thing happens. Is very annoying, and the first time I freaked out and thought that I would never see my data again.
Can you help? Did I screw up when I rename the folder?
Thanks

Welcome to the forums, Chabo! We not only follow these forums, we live in them. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' /> I'm sorry we couldn't get to your post sooner, but we have been exponentially busier than usual lately with the release of Lion, Safari 5.1, and now Firefox (in relation to 1Password).
Can you please tell me what version of OS X and Knox you are using on each machine? I would love to get this sorted out for you.
Cheers,Flag 0 -
Hi Chabo,
This is confusing. Can you drag the vault file from the external drive (it sound be like Master Backup.sparsebundle in the root of the external drive) to the local desktop. Double click on the vault, does it open correctly? If yes, close it, eject it and then drag it back to the external drive, overwriting the data on the external drive (Make sure the copy on the desktop is working correctly). Does the vault now open correctly on both machines?
Please let me know.Flag 0 -
I understand you'd like to avoid doing this but I can't reproduce your issue here. I tried to follow the same steps you took and it opened it correctly.
I was wondering if it has to do with the opening the vault on the external drive, if you can copy the vault to the local desktop and it works correctly than we can narrow it down to how Knox works with the vaults on the external drive. If not, then it is an issue with Knox in general.
Please give it a try and see how it turns out.
If you don't want to do this, try downgrading to Knox 2.0.8 and see if it works better. It's not fully compatible with Lion but it might give us a chance to figure out if it is something we did with Knox 2.1. You can download 2.0.8 from here.Flag 0 -
Here are the steps
Step 1. I insert the external drive and double click on the vault
Step 2. Two windows requiring passwords pops up (note that one is behind the other), I was able to move so you can see the problem.
Step 3. I type the password into one, the vault opens
Step 4. I type the password to the other windows, error message shows upFlag 0 -

Do you have the knox running behind? If you do, there is no problem. The problem is when Knox is not installed or running
What do you mean behind? I tried to open it with disk utility or diskmounter which is used by OS X to open the sparse bundle whenever Knox is not installed, no issues.

How can I send or post the images for each step?
You can't attach the images via fast reply, please press "More Reply Options". After that, you'll get an option on the bottom to attach Files or Images.

If you have your own image host, you can upload them there and then press the "Picture" button to insert them. It can be used in the fast reply window as well.
Hi Mike,

Thanks for your help. Attached are the files, hopefully you can see it. I have also sent an email to Support@ without compression. So fairly straighforward:

Step 1: I plug in my external HD and then click on the vault

Step 2: Two windows asking for the password pop up (one behind the other). I dragged them so you can see it.

Step 3: I type my password, one password windows dissapears and the vault opens

Step 4: The second password window remains... I type my password again and the error shows up. This is very annoying. This does not happen if I have Knox working in the back.

I have tried this into macs with lion, and the exact same problem. I think the issue came when I rename the vault... I did that through menu "Get Info" and then changed the name... However after having the problem I changed the name again through Knox.

Unluckily the 350MB vault does not fit into my personal HD.
Flag 0

The good news: I have been able to reproduce this on my Lion system. Here's what is happening...
Your external drive was initialized by Knox with Whole Disk Encryption (WDE). When you insert this device while Knox is not running, OS X will gladly mount the device for you and you'll see listed a Knox vault by the same name as the disk itself. When you double-click that contained Knox vault, you are presented with two windows (both asking for the same thing) -- for your encryption password. As would be expected, you are entering the correct password to the front-most of these windows and the vault gets mounted by OS X. The second window is now left sitting there as if you still need to provide a valid encryption password -- but you don't. That's where it gets messy, as seen by the error message you get if you enter the password in correctly to this second window. It cannot mount the vault again: it's already mounted so an error is being returned in this second window.
Although this dual password window is confusing, it doesn't stop you from using the vault as intended... I had no issues during my testing. You can just click this second window's "Cancel" button and everything is all set.
When Knox is already running at the time you connect this external drive, it handles things properly through it's auto detection.
I'll let the developers know about this issue, and hopefully they can figure out how to make Knox and Lion "behave" better in this specific WDE situation.
Thanks for being so helpful with your descriptions, screen shots and additional output, too — it all helped me in reproducing the same conditions. And in case you're keeping score, there really is no bad news. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />Flag 0
