Free Space Recovery | Whole Disk Encryption

Hi Folks,

I am running a full disk encryption on several drives I use for Apple Aperture Vaults. However I note that that free space is never recovered after files are deleted. I understand from the manual that this should be automatic?

I'm running Knox 2.1.7 (157) on 10.6.8

Earlier today I ran out of space on one of the drives and deleted a 32GB Vault. However the drive is still showing Zero KB available.

Any ideas what's going on?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

John

Full disk encryption uses the entire space on the drive. Are you looking at the drive space or the space in the vault? Are you using whole-disk encryption or just storing normal vault(s) on an external drive?

Please let me know. I'd love to get this sorted out.

    Hi khad,

I am using whole disk encryption and if I check finder it says 0kb. I have deleted a 32GB vault so I would expect to see that space recovered so I can add a new vault to the encrypted disk.

  • Hi,

I've the same problem. I use different vaults with adapting size on an external hard disk (not a whole disk encryption). When I delete files in the vault I don't see a change in the free space, neither on the ext. hard disk nor for the vault. It's moving the files to the trash, but after empty the trash, nothing changes.

Hi guys (mziehe, welcome to the forums!),

Even free space (deleted items) can be encrypted and it won't be compacted as soon as you empty the trash. Also, make sure that the vaults are still mounted when you empty the trash. If the vaults are ejected, emptying the trash will not empty the trash from those vaults.

After the vault is ejected, please open Knox and go to its Preferences > Vaults and select the vault you want to compact, then press "Compact Vault".

For large vaults, it may take a while for the compaction to finish.

    I hope that helps.

Thank you Mike, that's sorted it. Not sure how I missed that the first time round.

    You're welcome.

    I'm glad that helped.
  • Hi, Samural:

Above discussions are very good which helped users like myself being a rookie to understand more what to do. However as mentioned in one of the message in this forum that documentation for Knox is almost nil. Wouldn't it be helpful to have at least a basic User Manual so that most of the obvious issues are understood by the users via such documentation for such an important piece of application which a lot of us rely on daily? A misunderstood or misinterpreted concept of this software can led to disastrous consequences!

We can't foresee every possible question, so we try to have very responsive support to answer specific questions which are not covered in the User Guide. Is there anything specific that you would like to see added to the existing Knox User Guide? We've tried to make it as helpful as possible, but we are always working to improve it.
