Lost Unlock code and my 1Password data on Mac

So it would seem that I am in a 'tricky situation'. After a good year of using 1Password on my macbook pro and my iphone 3 the macbookpro data has gone and my memory for the unlock code on the iphone app has completely left me (due to panic probably, although it has been sustained for a good week now!). The wi-fi sync won't find my phone wirelessly and I have never used dropbox before...and really need to get to the data. Is there really no way of getting the data from my phone to the mac??

HELP!?

    Hi Sarah,

I split your post from the other topic into your own thread here, so that we can give you more personal attention. I'm sorry to hear that you lost the data.

Can you tell me what happened to the 1Password data on your Mac? Have you try to restore the data from a backup? Please open 1Password and go to the File Menu > Restore Data File from Backup and see if you can restore from any backup files that should still be on your computer.

Do you use Time Machine on your computer?

Just for curiosity, do you use any apps like AppZapper or MacKeeper?

If you can't remember the unlock code for the 1Password app on your iPhone, you won't be able to sync the data back to 1Password since it is required, you also need to unlock it for the Wi-Fi sync to work.

Please answer the questions and we'll do our best to help you get your data back. Thanks!
  • Hi.

    This gets worse OK!

The problem is that I couldn't get into my mac data either (my memory again). the app data is the most up to date. So I removed the mac 1password, using the instructions on the agile site, and installed a new copy. Then the second memory failure for the app code occured. (There is a reason why I am a ceramist!!)

I do use Time Machine and have backups for when I had the old installation so could I restore to the old data file from within 1password?

I don't know what AppZapper or MacKeeper are, sorry!

    Hi Sara,

Ah, so it is not that you lost the data on the Mac but you forgot the password to unlock it, correct? Did you at any point change the password recently? I'd recommend following the tips in our guide here on how to deal with a forgotten password:

If you did change it recently, you should be able to restore from an older backup (before the password change) by opening 1Password and go to File > Restore Data File From Backup and pick the backup file that was created before the timeframe of the password change.

Unfortunately, if you do not remember the password at all to both 1Password app and the 1Password app on your iPhone, there is no way to recover the data. We do not have a backdoor into the app where you can reset the passwords. If we did, that'd be an exploit for criminals to steal your data.

I hope this helps a bit.
  • ahh, thanks so much for your help. The security of 1Password is what made it an attractive buy in the first place. I have the essential passwords of life available to me at the moment, so am just going to wait for my memory to come back! I know it's a combination of four particular numbers for the app data so it's gotta be in there somewhere!

    Thanks again.

The *panic* is making it worse and may keep delaying you from remembering it. I'd suggest just relaxing and forget about it for a moment.

The next time you use 1Password, just let your hand type it in without thinking, it is possible your muscle memory will kick in and type in the right password. If this happens, go to the File Menu > Export All > 1Password Interchange Format. You can't change the password without remembering the first one, so this is a reactive move to get the data out while you still can. After that, let us know and we'll tell you what you can do with the export data, you'll be able to start a new data file and import from the export data.

This happens to me a few times when I'm highly stressed at a few times and the only time I could get out was by relying on my muscle memory. I do have a written password stored in a safe place just in case, I just hope that I don't forget the safe place either. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
