Firefox 6: How to Save New Login with 1P?

schwine
edited August 2011 in Mac
I have Firefox 6 with Snow Leopard for Mac, and 1 Password version 3.8.1.

With these new versions, I suddenly don't know how to add a "new" user name and password

for a "new" web page.

I see that the new 1Password window has a plus sign (+) in the upper right corner.

I thought maybe this is how new logins are created, so I navigated to my new web page, manually

entered the user name and password, opened up the 1Password window, and clicked on the plus sign.

In testing out this theory, I closed Firefox, went back to that web page, and found that the new login

did not get recorded in 1P. So that's obviously not how it's done.

Thanks for any tips on how to add a new user name and password to a web page with version 3.8.1 of

1Password for Mac.

I have Firefox 6 with Snow Leopard for Mac, and 1 Password version 3.8.1.

How do you save a login and password for a webpage with 1P version 3.8.1?

The 1P help file tip below doesn't work for me. When I hit the Return button,

I do not receive a 1P prompt asking to save the website.

Thanks for any tips on how to save a login and password in 1 Password version 3.8.1.

     Save a Login to 1Password

To save a new Login to 1Password, follow these steps:

Visit the login page of a site

Enter your username and password and login like normal

Hit Return to submit the form and log in—1Password will automatically detect that this is a login form and prompt you to save it:
This Autosave window will appear whenever a unique password is detected for a site. If you have two (or more) accounts on one site that use the same password, you can still make this window appear and save multiple Logins for the same site. Simply fill in the credentials for the second (or third, or fourth…) login, but before hitting Return to log in, mouse to the 1P browser button and choose Save Login to manually save a new Login entry.

The Autosave behavior can be inverted by holding the Option key when submitting a form: if Autosave is enabled, holding down the Option key will suppress the window; if Autosave is disabled, holding down the Option key will cause the window to appear.
  • RE: If you're looking for email support, our estimated email response time now exceeds 7 days due to the recent Apple product releases, so email support has been temporarily suspended. At the moment we are focusing our efforts on the forum since everyone can see our answers and find the help they need faster.

WHERE IS 1PASSWORD SUPPORT ON THIS FORUM???

Hello schwine and welcome to the Forums!

I hope you don't mind, but I merged your questions into a single thread. In addition, I responded to your PM.

    To summarize my suggestions:

    I am running Lion, 1Password 3.8.2.BETA-1 (build 31119) and 1P's Firefox6+ add-on version 3.8.1.b6

The following manual save procedure worked for me on: Southwest Airlines

    1. Visit the login page of a site

    2. Enter your username and password and login like normal

    3. DO NOT Hit Return to submit the form and log in—[s]1Password will automatically detect that this is a login form and prompt you to save it:[/s]

    4. Click the 1P icon to access the UI.

    5. Click the "+" symbol in the upper right.

    6. The login URL, username and password, and possibly some other important field info should appear.

    7. Click "Save" in the upper right.

I also noted that there are some websites that are coded in such a way that NONE of our supported browsers will automatically detect a new login or be able to "manually" create a login using the browser. For those, you will need to create a new entry from within the 1P application.

If the manual save method does not work for you, please try it on the Southwest Airlines site. I want to find out if your problem is universal or specific to certain URLs. For you or others experiencing this problem, please let us know any URLs where you experience the problem.

I realize that you are running Snow Leopard vs. Lion, but that fact should not be a factor. However, I never discount any difference when testing URLs. If you still have issues, please reply and let us know the specific versions you are running for 1P and the FF add-on. If you are running the same versions as I am, I will find a team member still running Snow Leopard to test on a matching platform.

    Cheers!

  • I also have the same issues and quite frankly i am just about ready to scrap 1PW for RoboForm or some other option. Not only does it not prompt me to save a new password, as the old version did, now my identity and wallet info do not work at all. Additionally if the login screen for a site has a pop up 1PW does not work either, which it did on the old version. Seems to me that any upgrade should result in a better user experience instead of the constant frustration of this current release. And forget about support..it is basically non-existent as far as i can tell....call me 'frustrated' and 'fed-up'

To continue my rant....i just love the new procedure for saving a password...that is IF it works, which i stated does not on my MAC. On the old version it was simply enter the login info and a 1PW screen would ask if you want to 'save' the new password. According to the above post a 1 click save has now been replaced by 3 steps...that's an improvement???? I don't think so.... <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_no.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='(n)' />
  • Here is my current experience with the save login and password procedure below.

When I click on the "Save" button (step 7 below), I find that the login and password did not save this information

after logging out of the web page and seeing if 1P has now listed the new login and password in it's 1P login window.

Specifically, this problem is when logging into my Gmail account.

As such, this new 1P login procedure doesn't seem to work with Gmail.

Is there ANOTHER WAY to save the login and password?

If so, please outline the steps in this thread.

Also, I tried logging into the Southwest Airlines site, and this login and password saving procedure "does" work for this

particular site. So, it's good to know that this new 1P procedure can actually work in Snow Leopard, but I need it to work for Gmail in my case.

By the way, Brandt, you mention that you and your staff are all switching over to the Mac Lion OS X for testing purposes.

Obviously, there are many more Snow Leopard users at this point than Lion users, so the complete abandonment of Snow Leopard on the part

of 1Password Technical Support is unrealistic, confusing and short-sighted. As you say, you're lucky if you can still find a 1Password Technical

Support staff member who still has Snow Leopard running for testing purposes. That unfortunate fact leaves all of us Snow Leopard users without

adequate support from the 1Password Technical Support staff. I don't think it takes much insight to realize that many Mac users with Snow Leopard

OS X will continue to work with this operating system indefinately, if not for years to come if it serves their needs.

I've also encountered some sites where the '+' doesn't work to save a new login. For those I edit the username and password fields directly into the 1P login. That seems to work.

I have three Gmail accounts, but only two of them appear within the 1Password window when I am at the Gmail login web page.

To access the third Gmail account, I've tried clicking onto the second keyhole icon on the top left corner of the 1Password window.

When I do that I am redirected to the following web page for some reason: http://www.iana.org/domains/example/

Yet, when I manually enter the exact same Gmail user name and password in question on the Gmail login page, I am promptly taken to this particular Gmail account.

Even when I click onto this particular Gmail account directly from within the 1Password vault login window, I am redirected to the above web page.

Note that with the previous version 1Password, I was able to login to this particular Gmail account without any problems.

It appears as though version 3.8.1 of 1Password for Mac has been made to work with the Lion OS X in particular, and less so for Snow Leopard.

Thanks for any tips on how to gain access to Gmail logins with version 3.8.1 of 1Password and Snow Leopard OS X.
  • Hello schwine,

Thanks for responding with additional information. I did not mean to imply that I and the team are "all" switching over to Lion. I do not run SL, but much of the team still does. I wanted only to admit that my results using Lion may not be a definitive answer.

I relayed your experience to the rest of the team, and several of them were eager to test your issue. I look forward to hearing their results, and I am confident that you will receive a response in this thread from one of them very soon.

    Cheers!

  • Hey there, foxwhite1! As we have mentioned elsewhere, in order to support Firefox 6 and beyond, we had to switch to a new extension framework, so we are still working out some of the kinks. At this time autosave is not implemented, but we hope to have this back as soon as possible. For the time being the manual save method that Brandt outlined will suffice. I am sorry for the inconvenience. Fortunately, once a Login item is saved, it isn't necessary to do so again regularly.

Hey, Omen! We have encountered some in our testing as well, and hope to have this working better in a future update. If you can let us know specific URLs that are posing a problem for you, we will be more than happy to investigate and try to improve this for everyone. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Hey, schwine! Thanks for following up.

I had some trouble with this myself, and discovered that I was using an older version of the Firefox 6 extension. Please install the latest version from our site. Hopefully this resolves the saving issue.

The Gmail problem you are having on the other hand sounds like the Login item still has the default www.example.com URL that is present in the new Login item template, as it redirects to the URL you mention. This would also explain why they do not show up in the extension when you try to select a Gmail Login item, as 1Password matches by the URL. Please double-check your Login items, as I was unable to reproduce the issue using any of my own Google Login items under Snow Leopard using 1Password 3.8.2 and extension version 3.8.1.

I hope this helps. Please let me know how it turns out. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • brenty - I have now ensured that I have the latest 1Password extensions for the latest versions of both Firefox and Safari browsers.

Both browsers continue to always redirect to the above noted web page for this particular Gmai account, whereas the other two Gmail accounts

    work properly within 1Password.

I have also ensured that the "Automatically submit logins" and "Ask to save new logins" options have been check-marked.

Essentially, this particular Gmail address does not appear in the 1Password "Logins for this page" window, whereas the other two Gmail addresses are present in this area.

I also tried deleting this email entry from the 1Password software and then re-entering it manually.

Looking back, this particular Gmail account has never worked in 1Password, including earlier versions, whether it be in Firefox or Safari.

However, when I manually type in the first couple of letters in the email entry box within the Gmail login page, another memory program promptly fills in the entire user name

and password. Looks like I'll have to stick to that method for this particular login and password combination.
  • I also am frustrated that the autosave feature is not working. This is essential to the program! Quick fix PLEASE.
  • The new version with Firefox is so bad I had to revert o Firefox 5 and revert to the version that supports Firefox 5.

Seriously, you guys really went out of your way to make the "new" version unusable- to the point I've starting looking at other passwords options.

Why you guys go so out of your way t screw it up.

The Firefox 5 method of adding new passwords and the nice easy to use drop down just worked. Very sad. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

Auto-save is very high on our list of features to fix within our new Firefox 6 extension as well as greatly improve this within Safari and Chrome too. Our developers are working on this as we speak and we hope to have auto-save available again very soon, but at the same time rushing something like this is not the right option it'll just lead to further problems and frustration for everyone.
The new version with Firefox is so bad I had to revert o Firefox 5 and revert to the version that supports Firefox 5.
If you really feel you prefer the old UI then we'd recommend going back to Firefox 3.6.20 as Firefox 3.6.x is receiving security patches, at least for now, whereas Firefox 5.x will not receive updates now that Firefox 6 has been released, that means that Firefox 5 is insecure and therefore not safe to use on a daily basis.

To help you use Firefox 3 while still running the latest stable version of 1Password we've made our Firefox 3 add-on available to download from our site along with instructions on how to install it.
Seriously, you guys really went out of your way to make the "new" version unusable
This certainly wasn't our intention, we're sad to see so many issues with Firefox 6 but we're confident we can get these resolved quickly to give everyone the best experience with 1Password, regardless of the browser you prefer.

In order to make sure that we can support the future of Firefox we had to move to the new frameworks, the old ones were just not practical to use as they'd mean having to rebuild the extension every 4-5 weeks and that's just to support the most current stable version of Firefox. The new frameworks allow us to support not only Firefox 6 but also the Beta (Firefox 7) Aurora (Firefox 8 and even Nightly (Firefox 9) builds with one add-on.

We know this is a big transition, it's a huge change for us too, and while we know it's frustrating we ask for patience and understanding. We care about every one of our users, after all we all use 1Password ourselves on a daily basis so we face the same issues you do.
The only difference between the Gmail accounts that work and the one that doesn't work is this: the Gmail account that does not work has a period < . > within the email address itself, but even so, there are no empty spaces within the email address itself. All three email addresses end with @gmail.com, and all three have the same password.

So...if the period is the problem, then I would have to go to the trouble of changing the actual email address.

Thanks for any information on using 1Password when a period appears within the email address.
  • The period in the e-mail address should have no bearing on the Login working at all, my personal gmail account has a period in it and I have no issues logging into this with our new extensions.

If you edit the item within 1Password itself do you see the address (URL) below the title? If so, this should be something along these lines:

    https://www.google.com/accounts/Login?hl=en&continue=http://www.google.com/

You can see this in the following screenshot:

That URL controls where 1Password will take you when a 'Go & Fill' is performed, but it also makes sure that 1Password is matching your Login when at Google sites.
  • Stu - thanks for the last post, including the helpful screenshot.

I hadn't noticed that url field before and it was, indeed, an incorrect url for whatever reason.

The correct url has now been pasted into this field to solve the problem.

Thanks for the your help, insight and patience.

I would now like to close this thread.
  • Hey schwine,

On behalf of Stu, you are very welcome!

I'm glad you sorted out the URL. It makes all the difference.

    Cheers!
