How to set the default folder view for a vault

Whenever I open a vault, it always does so in icon view, no matter what way I closed the vault out. Is there a way to make it default to a different view?

Welcome to the forums, mtimmer. As far as I understand it, this is controlled by Finder and not Knox. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you are using Lion. Is that correct? John Siracusa sums up the situation well in his epic Lion review:
“The controls at the top of the view options palette now include a mysterious sub-checkbox labelled ‘Browse in view,’ where view is the window's current view style. This appears to govern the view used when opening sub-folders from a window where the toolbar is visible, but a little experimentation will reveal that the setting is overridden by any ‘Always open in view’ setting of a sub-folder. The end result is the same as it has ever been: an inscrutable system that users quickly give up any hope of understanding, resigning themselves to manually correcting view styles as needed during every interaction with the Finder.”
Let's try to use that "Always open in…" setting to our advantage. Please give this a try. (It should work in previous versions of OS X too.)

Open the vault

While viewing the vault's contents in Finder, set the view you prefer (Icon, List, Column, or Cover Flow)

Press Command-J

Ensure that "Always open in [selected] view" is checked
I have had success with this, but your mileage may vary. Finder views can be frustrating to understand much less domesticate. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

  • I had tried that earlier without luck. In any non-Knox folder, I can select my preferred view and then click on "always in open in XXX view" with XXX referring to the current view. But in my Knox folders, the only option is "always open in ICON view" no matter what viewing option I am currently using.

My assumption was also that this was finder issue, not a Knox issue. But it only occurs on my Knox folders. For what it means, I'm using Snow Leopard, not Lion.

The vault's Finder window view (icon, list, etc.) is not something that OS X allows us to control within the vault itself. We've looked to see what it would take but there aren't any Apple routines to allow us to set that in a way that it is maintained mount after mount. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

I'm sorry there isn't a better answer for you at this time.
