Downloaded 1 Password 3 and now I'm locked out

How can I override the Master Password dialog box? I don't have a master password on my Mac and never have, but 1Password 3 won't accept that fact. Is there some Uber Master Password I don't know about?

On Aug 25, I innocently downloaded the latest 1Password for Mac + Safari extension, but I have never been able to it!! In Safari, each time I tick the 1Password icon, the Master Password dialog box appears. It's annoying, but OK I am fooled into believing there is no problem. I simply tick my Return key because I DO NOT HAVE A MASTER PASSWORD AND NEVER HAVE. What's my reward? An "incorrect password" message in neon red. 1Password 3 doesn't work!

What can I do to override this 1PASSWORD 3 ERROR? I've already tried two approaches to no avail: a) I opened 1Password in my Applications folder and verified that I do not in fact have a master password. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' /> I opened Utilities/Keychain Access/Master Password/Attributes and verified that I do not in fact have a master password.

I emailed AgileSupport for tech support, but to my bitter dismay I have heard nothing from a human being to address this 1Password 3 problem. Frankly, I'm disgusted with the absence of real tech support.

If I am not provided with an override for this Master Password glitch, I'm going to ditch 1 Password for good.

I need a remedy right away. I am not a techie geek so don't get over technical please. Thanks (I hope)

    Hi mayame,

I'm sorry that we weren't able to get to your email yet. We've been extremely busy lately. I'd be happy to respond here though.

The new 1Password browser extension requires a Master Password. You can set one by opening the 1Password application and selecting 1Password > Preferences from the menu bar, and then clicking on the Security tab and click the button for Change Master Password. You can leave "current password" blank if you do indeed currently have a blank password. You can enter a very simple password if you wish, but I would highly recommend choosing a strong password.

  • Ben,

    Thank you for responding!

Unfortunately, I have done what you recommended does not work.

I tried it before, and I tried it again right now --- 1Password 3 simply will not recognize my password.

    Now what?

Hey there, mayame! I am sorry you are still having trouble. We will get this sorted for you. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I apologize for the delay. We do indeed have real tech support staffed by actual human beings (such as myself -- although some may dispute my status). We have been receiving an exceptionally high volume lately. And while we are not able to get back to everyone as quickly as we are accustomed, we respond on a first-come, first-served basis as quickly as humanly possible. Unfortunately, we are also limited by this, our very humanity...

To be clear, every 1Password database requires a Master Password of some kind, which you must remember in the event that it is needed. Even if you save it in the Mac OS X Keychain (using the "Never prompt for Master Password" setting in Preferences > Security), if this information is lost or damaged it will be necessary to recover your data. Therefore it is paramount that you keep it safe. We never have access to your data or your Master Password and are not able to recover it for you in such an event.

Just to clarify, were you able to successfully change the Master Password? If so, I take this to mean that you are still unable to unlock the extension with your new Master Password. You can resolve this by reinstalling the extension. Just follow these steps:

Launch Safari and go to Preferences > Extensions > 1Password, and click Uninstall.

Quit Safari completely (Command+Option+Q on Lion).

Launch 1Password, click the 1Password menu, and select Install Extensions.

Click the Download link and complete the Safari extension installation progress as directed.
I hope this helps. If you are still having trouble, first try our troubleshooting guide. It may be that you have a 'space' as your Master Password. I have tracked down the email you sent us the other day and will be replying to you there as well. Please let me know if there is any additional information you can give.
