1Password 'deleting' Secure Notes & Software Licences!

AGV
AGV Junior Member
Acouple of times I've seen no Secure Notes and Software licenses - had LOTS of each, over 100 software licences - they disappeared upon opening 1Password - why?

I restored from a backup once the last time it happened and put it down to some glitch and ill have to do it again as it JUST HAPPENED!! This is not good. You are losing seriously big credibility at the moment. Why is this happening?

I havent checked to see what else might be wrong.

Please investigate this!!!!!!!!

I very unhappy customer.

    Hi Coktill99,

Please try selecting Help > Troubleshooting > Clear Cache.

    Thanks

    Ben
  • I also have this problem, about once a week, some data is missing. Once it is login accounts, other times software licence. This is really scary. Until now, I was always able to restore from a backup. But this is really annoying. I did clear the cache as suggested by bwoodruff. Why can't the programm clear the cache by itself to avoid this problem. This really need to be fixed. I'm using the latest version 3.8.2 on a mac.

    Hi macdavid,

    Welcome to the forums.

Did clearing the cache solve the problem for you?

Happened again yesterday - thats 4-5 times. Cleared cache yesterday, ill report back if any problems.

    Why does it happen?

I think it happened after I've accessed it on another device but I'm not sure.

Last thing i want is to manually backup the 1Password after every edit so i have an up-to-date backup file.

Just happened again.... looks like ill have to do a manual backup after every new saved login or a change !!! Please fix this.
  • You mentioned that you accessed the data file on another device, this shouldn't be the issue but can you tell me if it was 1Password for Mac, Windows or one of our mobile apps?

I have 1password on mac, iPhone and iPad - synced via dropbox. i think after accessing on iPad and iPhone - just to refresh them as i reorganised a lot on mac - the notes and software plus some logins had disappeared from the mac. Maybe i need to unlink and refresh the iPad & iPhone databases? Not sure but i don't understand why its happened and why in this odd way.
  • Hello Coktill99,

Please give it a try and let us know if it works for you.

    Cheers!

    Hi Coktill99,

I'm very sorry to hear you are still having this problem.

Please try updating to 1Password 3.8.6 and reinstalling the Safari extension:

Extension Data Does Not Match the Main Application

Also if you use the Firefox extension, please open Finder and select Go > Go to Folder

    Paste in

    ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles

    and hit Go.

Inside that folder you should see a OnePassword.sqlite file. Delete that.

Happened to me before. I avoid using Secure Notes and Software Licenses.
  • Sorry for the trouble, guys. I am a little confused, as I haven't been able to reproduce this. It doesn't seem clear if this is a sync issue (data added, changed, or removed should be added, changed, or removed on other devices as well), or if there is something else going on here...or why specifically Software and Secure Notes items.

If any of you can provide additional information, it may help us narrow this down. Please try Help > Troubleshooting > Rebuild Data File to see if there is some corrupt data that needs fixing. And could you please send us a Diagnostics Report? You can generate one in 1Password on your Mac by going to Help > Troubleshooting > Diagnostics Report... Just attach this to an email (support at agilebits dot com), and be sure to include any other details or screenshots you can as it will help us understand the problem better. (Also, please include a link to this thread for context.)

I look forward to hearing back from you. Thanks in advance! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I have just deleted 1Password from my iPhone and ill use 1Password for today on my macbook and rebuild etc, then re-install and relink 1Password on iPhone later and see if it works. I kind of did this before but this time ill do it 'properly'.

In terms of Diagnostics Report seems to contains alot of info...... what about privacy?

Also, unrelated, how safe is it to leave some passwords for safari to save? Is it safe? I only use my computer so it not a public computer.

It just happened again. This time i had not reinstalled it to iPhone so that is not the problem.

    Hello again, Coktill99! I am sorry you are still having this problem! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

Frankly, I am not sure there is much we can do from here without more information. Could you please send us a Diagnostics Report? You can generate one in 1Password on your Mac by going to Help > Troubleshooting > Diagnostics Report... Just attach this to an email (support at agilebits dot com), and be sure to include any other details or screenshots you can as it will help us understand the problem better. Please also include a link to this thread for context.

Just to clarify, the Diagnostics Report contains system information, which is identifiable on a system-level rather than an individual level. For example, it will contain your OS X user account name and log data. Your sensitive 1Password data, however, is encrypted, and only the file names of each item (random 128-bit strings) are listed. At any rate, I encourage you to review it before sending it. It is a standard HTML document, and you absolutely should be aware of what you send over the internet!

The item counts seem to be changing/disappearing. Is this reflected in the data you see in each vault category? I almost wonder if there is a permissions issue that is preventing 1Password from properly loading some items.

Ah! I am sorry. I forgot to answer your Safari AutoFill question!

Safari AutoFill is not inherently insecure. In fact, the login credentials are stored encrypted in the Mac OS X Keychain, which is protected by your OS X user account password. However, web browsers are the number one target for malicious hackers, and bugs are being found and exploited actively faster than the vendors can keep up. While there are no known vulnerabilities currently (at least that I am aware of), that isn't to say that someone couldn't find a flaw in Safari tomorrow that would give them access to your browser and, by extension, the login credentials it stores in the Keychain. Could they find a hole in 1Password? Absolutely, however it is a much smaller target, and since your data is encrypted using your Master Password, anyone would need both of these to access your information.

    So yes, I prefer to use 1Password for my most sensitive information. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I installed the latest Firefox 7 - and setting up prefs etc. - and i saw that *both* (?!) 1password extensions where not working / error'd. So possibly everytime i opened firefox it was corrrupting the data in some way - is this possible? It always happened after 'something' - either firefox or iphone. After ruling out iPhone firefox is the other possibility.

So ive removed the old extensions/add-ons and installed the new latest / extension - so far no errors with 1Password. Its been a few days.

If it continues this way - great, otherwise ill send the diagnositics.

And the question about safari was not as an alternative to 1Password, it was just a general question as sometimes it is a trivial site login and doing the shortcut and unlocking 1password doesnt seem necessary.

I think 1Password is brilliant and so this issue was very unexpected & disappointing after years or no issues.

Anyway, It could be the firefox issue or something else... if its something else ill report back.
  • Not at all! I am sorry for the confusion. What is happening here is that previously we needed to build an extension for each individual version, so if you still have the extensions for Firefox 4, 5, etc. around, Firefox will recognize them as incompatible and disable them. No harm done!

I use AutoFill in limited cases when it isn't something super important.

I hope your troubles are behind you! Be sure to let us know if this continues to be a problem. And remember that you should be able to restore from a backup if something goes missing (File > Restore Data File from Backup)...although I really want to get to the bottom of this if something is happening to your data.

    The link doesnt work.

Also, i think the problem happens after i open the main 1Password app after ive restarted my macbook air running lion. Any ideas on what it could be knowing this?

Fix link and ill send diagnostic.
  • AGV, you can e-mail the diagnostics to us at support@agilebits.com, along with a summary of the problem and a link to this forum thread so that we can connect the dots, so to speak.

    Thanks for your help.

Sent info via link as private discussion.

Also, i cant log in to support side with this login... do i need to create another separate login? .... or am i not doing something correctly.

Also, as an update to anyone interested. Ive narrowed the problem down to only happening after a restart the computer, open safari and then open 1Password - in this order. So something in the safari extension is not liking my database upon reading it after a restart.....

Sorry for the confusion, AGV. Our support site is separate from these community forums, so they do not use the same login credentials.

Please Note: If you have not sent the Diagnostics Report to our support email address yet (support@agilebits.com) please send it there since we don't all work in these forums ever day. You will get a much quicker response from our support email since everyone on the team has access to it, so you won't just be waiting on one person. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

As per support advice (via support site) I have moved dropbox out of the Knox and as far as i can tell it seems to have resolved the problem. I havent restarted alot but so far the problem hasnt re-occurred - and before it happened consistently. Ill keep a check during the next week or so and after a few more restarts, but it seems like its fixed.

    Thanks for your great help.
