Using 1Password Touch with "App Store" App (apple ID)

Hi,

i'm new to 1password (mac and iphone, synched) and i have spent a good time searching these forums now for a clue to solving this, but have not found anything sofar.

I cannot figure out how to use 1password on my iphone to authenticate against the Apple iTunes Store when using the "App Store" App. I have created an iTunes account type on the mac and synced, it shows up in 1password on the iPhone, but when i try to purchase an app, the popup dialogue asking the password for my apple ID in the store cannot be pasted on the iphone.

How do i do this? Is having a separately memorized password for the Apple Store the only way to go?

Many thanks to whoever can help me with this.

Cheers

Stefan

  • Stefan,

Which version of iOS are you running at the moment? There was an issue with pasting into App Store / iTunes prompts on the iPhone with an older version but I believe this should be fixed now.

1Password itself can't directly integrate with these prompts as there's no APIs from Apple for us to access them, so the only option is copy and paste or a memorable password for iTunes. I personally choose the second option, generated a pronounceable password using 1Password for Mac and spent time learning it, I now know it off by heart.

my iOS version is 4.3.5 (BL1) on an iphone 4. So pasting the password should work here, do i understand this correctly?
  • I believe so, yes, make sure you copy the password from 1Password first and then paste this into the App Store prompt.
  • hmm. i have rebooted the phone even, but the password popup simply does not offer a paste choice when tapping into the password field. We are talking about the same place here, right? The "Apple ID password" prompt that comes when you attempt to purchase from the itunes store from within iOS.

Does it work for everybody else? I'd accept to be the only one, but i'd love to know. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

    Hi sowumbaba,

    It works for me:

    Hi Mike,

thanks for your help on this. I think (after a morning coffee and some fresh thought) i have found the culprit: The itunes type account in 1password on iOS allows you to select "copy" on the password value, but then actually does not copy anything to the clipboard. The clipboards then is empty and hence the popup field in the Apple ID Password dialogue does not offer a "paste" blop (it never does when the clipboard is empty).

So: am i failing to understand a works-as-designed feature in iTunes type accounts or is this simply a bug?

In any case, I'll be able to work around this by creating a different type of account for that password in 1password for now.

    Many thanks for your support,

    Stefan

PS: for those finding this later than august 2011, i am on 1password PRO v. 3.5.9 on iOS 4.3.5 (BL1) on an iphone 4 at the time of writing.
  • OK, to complete the journey, i'll write what happened, even if i make a fool out of myself.

No bug, just simple stupidity on my end is what occurred. For reasons not understood, the password in the iTunes account on 1password on my mac was empty, so it consequently synced over to iOS as empty. I copied empty and consequently could not paste into the password field of the app. No bug. No real problem, just chasing gooses.

    I'm sorry for the stirrup.

  • No need to apologise, Stefan, I'm glad to hear everything's working as it should after entering the password into the iTunes item <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
