Filevault 2

So lets go for a nice change of pace around here. We all need to step away from 1P for a little bit every once in a while. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

Has anyone used the FV2 in Lion ? Any concerns ? Issues ? Advantages ? Limitations ? I have been doing a little reading up on it and will be doing more today etc. Just wondering your thoughts on it.

  • Using it happily on my MBP mid 2010 with an ssd. I don't notice anything differently in performance compared to no filevault. The only thing that is actually different is when booting, it will ask immediately for my password instead of later on (it has to decrypt the disk first in order to boot; after booting it will automatically log you in). I only have that disk in it and I only have 1 user account on the machine so I haven't tried it with multiple disks and multiple users. I've read about some problems when using more than 1 disk though, things are not as seamless in that scenario. VMware Fusion and the other applications perform as before. The Windows Experience Index score in my Win7 vm hasn't even changed which I expected because when benchmarking there is a performance hit (as Anandtech noted). Apparently it is limited to benchmarks because in real life it is not noticeable and that I like. The same goes for sleep/wake/log off, it just behaves as without filevault (much better than with filevault 1!).

All in all I'm very satisfied with filevault 2 and from what I've read on various forums I'm definitely not the only one! If you want a bit more technical info I think the Lion article from arstechnica and the more specific filevault 2 article from anandtech are a must-read.

Rich Text Editor. To edit a paragraph's style, hit tab to get to the paragraph menu. From there you will be able to pick one style. Nothing defaults to paragraph. An inline formatting menu will show up when you select text. Hit tab to get into that menu. Some elements, such as rich link embeds, images, loading indicators, and error messages may get inserted into the editor. You may navigate to these using the arrow keys inside of the editor and delete them with the delete or backspace key.
