Vault Backup Problem

Joedds

I have a 126GB Knox Vault. Knox 2.1.8 is set for automatic backup. It has been backing up the vault for almost 22 hours and appears hung at about 106 GB. This has happened for 2 days in a row (as I terminated the last backup after 24 hours). Is there a limit to the vault size that can be backed up? How much time should a backup take (as we lose all use of the original vault during the backup)? The original Knox vault opens and functions fine.

After 2 days of Knox trying to backup and being hung at about 106 GB, I stopped the backup. Did not seem to have the same problem with previous versions of Knox. Particulars: Mac Pro with 7GB RAM / 10.6.8 / Backup volume has 845 GB available, so space is not a problem. Vault is password protected, opens and closes fine, files inside appear uncorrupted.

I tried a manual backup last night. It has now been running for 14 hours. Seems hung at 106 GB. Any answers from Agile Tech Support?

Hi Joedds, welcome to the forums.

I'm sorry that we didn't get to you sooner and for the issue you're having.

Can you tell us the specifics on the backup volume, is it an internal drive that's formatted as HFS+? Have you try backing up to a different drive or external drive?

There are no limits to backing up your vaults. I had a 500GB vault that I backed up with Knox vaults successfully to an external drive and it took me about 12 hours.

Try the following; after you're done for the day and you want to back up, close the vault and Knox. Copy the vault file to your backup volume and see if that'll work. To get the path to your vault, please open Knox and go to its Preferences > Vaults, select the vault you want to back up and look at its Vault Location to figure out where it is.

Please let me know how it turns out.

Both the Vault and the Backup drives are internal (but separate) drives. All of my internal drives are journaled HFS+. The backup drive is actually the startup drive and has been the same one that I have used for months. Knox backed up successfully to this drive until 8/18/11 (the last successful backup listed). I will try just copying the vault over manually as you suggested and report back.

Manual copying of the vault to the backup drive worked fine, and took less than 45 min. Opened the backup with no problem. Not sure why the auto backup feature keeps hanging.

One problem with manual transfer. Now Knox only lists the backup vault, not the original vault, and password protection for both vaults is lost. If you double click on either of the vaults, they open without a password.

Please take a look at the Knox password stored in OS X keychain section in the Knox User Guide and let me know if that is the issue.

You can drag the vault to the list of vaults in Knox's preferences in order to add it back. You might even try making the copied/backup vault the new "actual" vault and see if Knox will back that up.

I removed the password form my OSX keychain and that solved the password security problem. Surprisingly, my regular Knox backup scheduled for early this morning appeared to work. So now I have two Knox vaults on my backup HD, the one I dragged over manually to copy and the one that Knox created. Not sure why, but I did run Diskwarrior and Onyx over the weekend and maybe they corrected the file paths. On the other hand, Knox seems confused by the duplicate vaults. It will only show one of the duplicate vaults in the Knox preferences list (even though the names are not identical, ie. vault, vault 2011-9-9, vault 2011-9-10 21.04). When you drag one to the list view, it opens the new one and delists the old one.

I'm glad things are getting sorted out. If you remove all backups and start fresh, are things working well? It sounds like we're about there, but I just want to make sure. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
  • As my external drive seems to have problem so I use ChronoSync (utility to backup files from one location to the other and have the option to verify all backups) to backup everything on this drive onto my new drive. Among all files there are two Knox Vault files (in sparse bundle). My question is after backing up to the new drive, can I use the two Knox vault files just like those on my old replaced drive as my main Knox vault files and then from these files create backup of them within Knox application?

That should work. You'll just need to add the vaults to Knox as described in my other post.

Just be sure to use Knox to backup the active vaults and then have ChronoSync backup the backups going forward. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
