1P toolbar button disappears from Firefox when extension is updated [Fixed]

Is it only me or these new versions of 1Password are getting worst? I used to find the old way to display the login box easier, the password prompt rarely works, the extra clicks to use the password generator is annoying. Any chance to step back to the older format or at least offer the two options?

And what is the deal now with Firefox? I need to quit (command + q), the application and restart cause the 1Password icon keep disappearing from the browser nav.

With Safari 5.1 we've had to completely rewrite our browser extension from the ground up using new frameworks to support the changes Apple made to Safari 5.1 and so there is no going back to the old interface and extension. We're pushing forward with the new extension and to help you make the transition we've created a guide to the new extension.

We're by no means done with the new extension, there's lots of features we want to add and improve as we continue to develop this, the big advantage is that now we're using this same extension in Safari, Firefox and Chrome we can roll out new updates much faster and in general have the same great features in all browsers.

Firefox 6 has a similar story, with Mozilla now releasing a new stable version of Firefox every 6 weeks we had to change the way we built our extension to support this, otherwise all we'd ever be doing is making 1Password work with the next version of Firefox, and that would be no fun for anyone.

The Firefox add-on should not be disappearing so frequently though. If you go to Tools > Add-Ons within Firefox can you tell me which versions of 1Password you see there?

    I hope that helps,

I have to say that I'm seeing exactly the same problem with the latest Firefox 6.0.2 and 1Password 3.8.6 (build 31152). The 1P button in the tool bar disappears occasionally (I have yet to figure out why). Quitting and restarting Firefox sometimes brings it back. Removing the extension, reinstalling it (3.8.5 beta or 3.8.4 non-beta) doesn't seem to matter. I run the install, quit and restart firefox and it'll be there. Until I open a new window or restart the browser. At which time it seems to be a 50-50 chance as to whether it sticks around or not.

I'd sure like to get this resolved. I've been forced over to Chrome or Safari more and more every day, because the extension there seems stable. But I'd prefer to work in Firefox if possible.

If it's an issue with Firefox itself, I'd appreciate blunt honesty, and I'll start the migration away from it. But if it's a known bug that you're working on squashing, I'd appreciate knowing that too.

    Thanks!

The problem is not necessarily Firefox itself. The biggest problem is that they are now releasing a new version every 6 weeks. If they break something with our extension with what they've updated, we have very little time to try and correct it.

But some of the problems are actually Firefox. Some of the things we used to be able to do simply don't work anymore in the new version.

We are working very hard to work around all of this, but it isn't going to happen over night I'm afraid.

Thanks Ben, I appreciate the direct answer. I'll "deal with it", and hope for the best in the future... <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_yes.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='(y)' />
  • Thanks for your patience and support, sparker! With the work we are putting into the new extension, there should be minimal changes required looking forward to upcoming releases (Firefox 7, 8, and 9 are already in testing -- and in many cases our Firefox 6 extension is working with all of these!) There are some growing pains right now, but I appreciate you bearing with us and in the end it should mean less hassle with future updates! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Actually, I found out that I don't have to reinstall the extension every time it disappeared like I used to (which involved two "quits" of Firefox). Now, for whatever reason, it's enough to simply disable, then renable it to get the 1P button back in my Firefox toolbar. A MUCH faster solution!! Just posting it here to make sure that people who are experiencing the same issue have a simpler thing to try than my previous suggestion.

This should be improved going forward. We made some changes to the extension which you should appreciate when the next update comes out. The toolbar button should no longer be disappearing in Firefox. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
