MAS version not working - how to reset

netnothing
netnothing Member
I have 2 machines....Mac Pro and MacBook. Both had the latest 1Password prior to the MAS version. Both using Dropbox for keychain storage.

On Mac Pro I deleted non-MAS version. Emptied Trash. Purchased MAS version. Launched fine and pointed to Dropbox data file.

Then on MacBook, deleted non-MAS version. Installed MAS version. This time however, I don't get the Welcome screen....and I'm stuck on a login screen that won't accept my password.

I was never shown the new welcome screens. Even manually selecting the Dropbox keychain file isn't working.

Please help.

  • Wow...this is turning into a disaster. So it looks as if the Mac Pro version, even though I pointed it to the Dropbox file....isn't using it?

I keep getting these errors in Console:

    Hi Kevin,

1Password MAS edition does not (and cannot) support non-standard Dropbox folder locations. The Dropbox folder must be in your ~ (home) folder.

Wow....that sucks. I keep my Dropbox folder on a 2nd drive, not my Boot SSD.

Guess I'll have to look at moving it.

    Gee, thanks for nothing Apple! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_no.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='(n)' />

I haven't actually tested this yet, but will when I get to my other machine tonight...

I have my entire home folder stored on a Drobo. If you move your home folder, instead of just the Dropbox folder, that might work.

Can't encourage you to do it until I've tested it myself but just a heads up.

Some discussion on moving your home folder: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3243930?start=0&tstart=0

There is definitely a right way to do it and a wrong way to do it, so if you decide to try it make sure you make a good working backup!

Ok, can the 1Password datafile be stored in a folder within Dropbox? Or does it have to be stored in the Dropbox root?

As of writing, my 1Password file is in ~/Dropbox/1PasswordSync/1Password.agilekeychain. That said, I've heard Apple may restrict what folders we have access to in the future, and so it may need to be in the Dropbox root. I would say to play it safe put it in the root, but for now it should be okay in a sub-folder.

Ok, I can not get 1Password to accept the file if it's in a subfolder of Dropbox.

In prefs, it won't even let me choose the file to use....I choose it, but the path never changes.

On top of all this.....the original issue with my MacBook not able to open my datafile....on the MacBook, my Dropbox folder has always been in my user folder.

    This is getting annoying.

  • Everytime I manually choose the keychain file that is in a folder in Dropbox.....1Password asks if I want to use it, I say yes, but it never takes.

    C'mon guys.....did anyone test this?

  • How do you move the Dropbox folder back to the Home folder?

Then, how do you get 1Password to point to this moved Dropbox folder in 1Password 3.8 (in preparation for moving to 3.9).

I'm assuming these are the necessary preparation steps for moving to 1Password 3.9?

    Thanks.
  • Tom,

Moving your Dropbox folder is fairly easy and the good folks at Dropbox have created a guide on how to do this. Once the move is complete, just locate your 1Password.agilekeychain file within Dropbox and double-click it to tell 1Password 3.8.x to use this as your data file.

You can then delete the 1Password 3.8.5 app and install 1Password 3.9 from the Mac App Store and it should pick up your data file within Dropbox for you.

    Kevin,

Really sorry for the trouble here, we did test 1Password 3.9 with Dropbox syncing on our own systems before it got approved to the App Store. And just like Ben I have my data in a subfolder within Dropbox.

When you open 1Password do you see your data or is it using a data file that's just empty?

Let me know and we can get this fixed for you.

This was how I was setup and it didn't work for me. 3.9 copied the datafile from my Dropbox subfolder to the sandboxed container.

According to Roustem, the datafile has to be in the root of the Dropbox folder:

I've since allowed 1Password to move the datafile itself to the root of my Dropbox.

No way I've tried has allowed me to move it to a subfolder with my Dropbox folder. It never takes....and always seems to default the datafile back to the container.

It's not a big deal right now.......everything is working between my 2 Macs and 2 iOS devices with it being in the root of Dropbox.
