3.9+ and 3.8.5 Compatibility
in Mac
Hi,
I love 1Password, and have no problem with it being only available through the Mac App Store. I do have one question, however. Will the data file continue to be compatible with both the Snow Leopard version and the Lion only version?
I ask because I use 1 Password on 3 different computers. The two that I own have already been updated to Lion, but my work computer is still running Snow Leopard (and there is zero chance that my employer will update it to Lion before June 2012).
Thanks,
Darren

Ok, that's good. My wife's computer can't run Lion. I really love Agile and 1PW, but I'm really not happy about this change. However, if the current downloaded version will still be able to read the keychain that eases it a bit. What about in 1PW 4? Will the keychain work or will be just be out of luck on non-Lion computers for syncing?Flag 0

I also had the same questions before I make my MAS purchase. I use 1Password on multiple Mac's So I figure that when I use 3.9 MAS it will update my 1Password.agilekeychain to work correctly with some of the changes that have been made in 3.9; but how will any systems that use 3.8.x work with that same 1Password.agilekeychain file synced over dropbox. I'm hoping it is seamless!
Is there an official response on this?Flag 0 -

1Password 3.8 and 3.9 can continue to use the same data file. The AgileKeychain format is alive and strong. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Thanks for the quick response. You wrote it even before I could finish my post. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

That's the only hangup I have now. If it doesn't sync, I'll have to find a new *something* for my wife to use, or else all her passwords will go bcd to something like password.Flag 0 -

Hello ryanhaver and rKunda,
It is a great question!
We do not discuss future application releases, but you can be assured that if there were a change to the keychain format down the road, there will definitely be an upgrade path to allow use of your current data. As you both do, I use the current Agile Keychain...so does everyone in the company. Without the ability to convert to a new format, we would be without our data too! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
This potential situation is similar to when 1Password 2 transitioned from the OS X keychain to Agile Keychain format. There is a procedure for existing 1Password 2 users to convert their data file to the currently used format. There was no way we were going to leave customers hanging in the wind.
Regardless of any future changes, there will be a way to convert your data file and continue using 1Password. I hope my comments have eased your concerns. If not please let me know.
Regards,

I think this answers my question as well, but if possible, I'd like to confirm...
I've got three machines, all running snow leopard. One will never be upgraded to Lion, but two will, though probably on wildly different timelines. I'm willing to buy 1Password from the app store now, even though I can't use it (in order to lock in the lower price), but only if I can be sure that for a reasonable timeframe (1 to 2 years), all three computers will be able to sync my 1Password keychain, regardless of whether they're on 3.8, 3.9 or 4.x. Can you assure me of this?Flag 0 -
1Password 3.8, 3.9, and all the way back to version 2.12.1 all support the AgileKeychain format, and we won't be removing it from these. While I cannot say for certain, I strongly suspect that 1Password 4 may also support the AgileKeychain format, even though we are working on our next-gen data format as well, mainly for interoperability. Personally, I have macs that will not -- and cannot -- run Lion, and I would hate to not be able to sync my data with those once I start using 1Password 4 on my main system. I can't make any guarantees, since 1Password 4 isn't finished and nothing is set in stone, but we prefer to err on the side of interoperability with our own products. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />Flag 0
