Purchased on app store wont let me set master password
Comments
-
I had exactly the same problem. I downloaded 1password from the App Store on my Macbook Pro and couldn't get past the Master Password screen. I then downloaded it on my iMac, and the installation was successful. I tried many different scenarios on my Macbook Pro, but just couldn't get past the Master Password screen. I then followed the advice from "roustem" in post #23 and Hey Presto, it worked. Thanks guys.Flag 0
This terminal command should fix the issue:
chmod -RN /var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd.peruser.$UID/overrides.plist

The terminal command doesn't work, I get "UID: Undefined variable."
I have been using the latest version of 1P before 3.9 on Lion and my keychain is on my dropbox.
Any idea?Flag 0 -

Hi, Halix!
Here's a minor variation of the command for you to try:
chmod -N /var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd.peruser.`id -u`/overrides.plist
Your Terminal shell is probably csh or tcsh, which is one reason why the other command would fail.Flag 0 -

I can't believe I continue to experiment with terminal commands but,
here's what I get by just running 1Password
After I enter all of the terminal suggestions here, nothing changes at all.

Hi artysta,
We weren't trying to blow you off, as I mentioned, we're happy to try and help. What I was saying is that: per Apple's policy, if you decide you want a refund, it has to come through them. Developers do not have the ability to issue refunds for MAS apps. And, the problem you are having is not caused by 1Password, but a bug in Lion. We've submitted this bug to Apple and are hopeful they will fix it soon. In the mean time, we've found a fix of our own which is working for 95% of the people experiencing it (which is only a small portion of the people use 1Password 3.9).
Please run this command and paste the output so we can see what is going on:
#37Flag 0 -

This is not a problem in 1Password -- this message means that overrides.plist has incorrect permissions on your Mac and the system cannot make changes to it.
If you ran the command suggested above, please let us know what the output of the command was so that we could help you. Also, please let us know what you see when you run this command to query the permissions:
ls -FaBl@WeHd /var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd.peruser.*/overrides.plist
You can also take your Mac to the Genius Bar at any Apple Store and they will be able to solve this problem for you.Flag 0 -

Ouch! It is owned by root, how did that happen? Have you tried to run Verify Permissions using Disk Utility?
If Disk Utility doesn't help, you can change the ownership of this folder using chown command:

Halix,
I've heard of $UID not working if you use an alternate shell (i.e. not bash). You may be able to see what shell you are using by running
echo $SHELL
For me, this returns
/bin/bash
If it doesn't return anything for you, or returns something else, then it sounds like you are not using bash. This could be a hold-over from a previous OS X install that you upgraded from where bash was not the default shell.Flag 0 -
I get "/bin/tcsh"
I have always upgraded since almost 10.1 and always used Migration on new Macs. Probably a hold-over then...

That would certainly explain it. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />Flag 0 -
I'm having the same problem of not being able to set a Master Password, but I'm a very inexperienced computer user.... it took me awhile just to figure out how to get to the Terminal screen. Once there, I pasted the command below (copied from one of the posts above) into the Terminal screen and figured I was supposed to hit the return key. I tried that and nothing happened, so I don't know what to do now. AgileBits, I'm glad this work-around has helped other people who obviously know their way around a Mac, but if you have a known issue like this that precludes a bunch of brand new customers like me from even opening the software, it sure would be nice for you to provide a link on your homepage with simplified, step-by-step instructions that are geared to low-tech folks. To be honest, forums such as this one are intimidating to me (and probably many other people,) especially when the various posts above clearly assume that the audience knows the difference between the Terminal and the Console. If a somewhat common problem such as this exists, please make the work-around easier to find and easier to implement for people like me who could care less about the Terminal and the Console and everything else that's behind the Wizard of Oz's curtain. In the meantime, I'm inclined to request a refund from the Mac App Store, but I suppose I'll wait for 24 hours in the hope that AgileBits will come through with some help that is geared to dummies like me.

Hi chutetamer,
Thanks for the feedback. Ultimately we are hopeful that Apple will fix this bug in their software quickly and no one else will have to bump into it when trying to install 1Password. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> Until then we're happy to help you work around it.
The command actually doesn't have any "output" to the screen. If it doesn't tell you anything, in most cases that means it worked. Try restarting your computer and setting up 1Password: I think you'll have much better results now.
If not feel free to post back here and we'll get you squared away.
Thanks!
czerwe,
Could you please run this command for me and let me know what the output is?
ls -FaBl@WeHd /var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd.peruser.*/overrides.plist
Thank you.

Same issue as everyone else here. I'm not familiar with or happy using Terminal. I can't understand why AgileBits lets its brand get trashed by leaving us paying customers hanging and having to scrabble around forums to get our paid-for item of software to work, regardless of whose fault this is. Please AgileBits, provide a fool proof simple guide to make 1Password work.Flag 0
