How to find out about updates for MAS version?

I'm curious if the new version will notify me about updates like every version prior to 3.9 has? I understand I will need to update via the Mac App Store—I have no issue with that. However, if the application doesn't notify me about updates it could take weeks before I'm aware of a new version being available. So, since it isn't listed one way or the other, will 3.9 and later still let me know about updates from within the application or do I have to go to the Mac App Store to find out about them?

Thanks,

-Rodney

  • The MAS regularly checks to see if any installed apps have updates and displays a badge on the MAS icon with the number of updates that are available. If the frequency of the automated checks doesn't suit, then you can always go into the updates tab of the App Store itself and it will manually check for all available updates.
  • 2010: An application told you while using it, if there was an update available and offered you to download and install it.

2011: You have to launch a completely different application on a regular basis, choose the right tab, let it look for updates, choose "download" and enter your password. Then it will install your application.

    What a progress.

Since I can't find anywhere what that frequency is and I don't launch the App Store very often, I still want to know what the update notification process is. I like to update apps such as 1Password as soon as there are updates, since I use it so often. There seems to be some issues with the badge on the MAS icon not always updating unless I launch the MAS application, also. I'm not sure if this is due to the frequency of checking for updates or some other issue, though.

I'm sorry but I don't have that answer. As the Mac App Store is Apple's product, they should be able to help you out with it.

How about an answer to my original question, though? Will 1Password continue to let me know when there are updates available on its own?

Again, updating via the Mac App Store is no big deal, but I would like to know about updates ASAP.

I don't believe any MAS apps provide their own update notifications but this is something we can look into.

Thanks, Ben. Please put this in as a vote for continuing that feature. It should probably be made an option so that people who don't want the separate notification won't be annoyed by it.

Lion delivers a few great features to the Mac App Store as detailed here:

    http://developer.apple.com/technologies/mac/whats-new.html

Push Notifications can be sent even if an app isn't running. Many developers likely won't send push notification just for updates

    but it is a possibility.

In App purchase. Sadly paid upgrades cannot be done via in app purchase but it's there for some developers to utilize.

Delta updates - Instead of downloading 18MB of data in the update only what's changed will come down.

There are some great possibilities as we move forward! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

At this time, the App Store is where you see notifications of updates. As previously mentioned, the badge for the App Store can be updated in Lion even if you don't launch the app.

We love updating 1Password, so this is definitely an area we are interested in improving.
