3 Computers (10.5, 10.6, 10.7)+iPhone+iPad: Do I really need 5 versions?

edited September 2011 in Mac
I am currently a Dropbox user and am considering 1Password. I have three machines one each on 10.5, 10.6 and 10.7. I also have an iPad and iPhone.

I headed to the MacAppStore and saw that the $20 version 3.9 is only compatible with 10.7. Then I saw on the website a $40 version 3 that works on 10.6. After nearly an hour of poking around and reading reviews and FAQs etc, I saw that I could download an even older version to work with 10.5.

Then I saw the 1Password iOS version for my iPhone and finally something called 1PasswordPro, which is not clear what the difference is with the Pro and nonPro versions.

For a product called 1Password your product lineup is very confusing.

Q: Do I really need to purchase five different versions of your software? Will they all work together to access the same data?

Q: How much money do I need to spend for a single password solution????????

$20+$40+$40+$10+$15????

Q: Can I purchase the MacAppStore version for $20 and use the install code to get the older versions of 1Password to work with my 10.5 and 10.6 machines? Are there any other promotional offers out there I should be aware of?

What's the bottom line??

I found this page to be of no help: https://agilebits.com/store/choose

Since your product promises to simplify my life, I think you should make it simpler to understand which of the many versions of your products people need to create a solution that works. I think you should offer a bundle to simplify the confusion.

Thanks!

  • 77 views, but no responses. It's a completely simple question. I want to purchase your product and am simply asking how much is it? Can I purchase the $20 copy at the App Store? Do I need one for each version on my 10.5, 10.6 and 10.7 machines? Can I purchase a bundle? How much money would it cost to purchase your product as a solution for all three machines, my iPad and iPhone??? Simple question, how many copies/versions do I need and how much???
  • I know the answer to the iPhone/iPad question. If you buy 1PasswordPro it is a universal app that will run natively on both the iPad and Iphone. It was specifically created for folks who have both. If you buy the Pro version, you won't need to buy anything else for your iDevices.

As for your broader question, I have only ever the 3.8.x versions on 10.6 and now the 3.9 MAS version on Lion. I do know that if you plan on getting future updates of 1Password for the Lion machine, it would be a good idea to buy the discounted $19.99 version on the MAS now. That is a time-limited promotion and won't be up forever. If you buy it, you'll get 4 for free (a considerable savings).

Mac OS 10.6.x will not be getting a version 4 of 1Password. Only updates to fix bugs, and security/stability issues of 3.8.x.

Not sure about the 10.5 machine.

I would think if you bought a family bundle of 3.8.x you could use an earlier version and not be in violation of the license terms. But I'd hope an AgileBits staffer would confirm that.

Then again, since the license terms of the MAS 3.9 version are that you can put it on any machine associated with your AppleID, I wonder if they'd let you just buy that version and install lower versions on your other computers.

Sorry for not helping too much!

  • Hello AgileBits! You have a customer here with money in his hand ready to buy, are you not interested in growing your business.

    How frustrating.

Makes me question if I should trust you to hold my most important business information.

I just need clarification on which product to buy.
  • Still waiting for an answer. I emailed, I've written my question here, still standing here with money in hand ready to purchase.

Q: Do I really need to purchase five different versions of your software? Will they all work together to access the same data?

All versions of the App will work with the same data file, no matter which one you are using or even if you are using mixed versions.

Q: How much money do I need to spend for a single password solution????????

You would need a 1P license and as long as you are the only one using the machine (app) you can use it on as many Macs as you can afford the team calls this there sane licensing model.

    http://help.agilebit...y_licenses.html

As to the iOS version use the Pro it works on iPhone and iPad, there are standard versions which run on just the iPhone and then a iPad version just for the iPad.

If you think you will get yourself an iPad the Pro version is the best bet for your money.

Edit See now you do have an iPad

No the MAS version is Lion only the License code is handled by the app store you do not actually receive a code.

You would need to purchase a license for the 3.8 version from our website.

As to promo offers you can search for 1Password coupon and find a few on google. Additionally the team has been seriously flooded with email. You may be able to send them an email and see what they can do. i.e. Wait on the email you already sent

They cannot bundle the iOS apps as Apple owns and runs that store.

Agile sell's the version you need from its store (one for 10.5 and 10.6), so its kinda hard to well impossible to do promos between 2 stores

I am sorry you didn't get answered earlier, They have been swamped and I just volunteer here so I am not always around. But I will look at this topic for the next bit to see if you have more questions.

I think I covered it if I didn't let me know.
  • Sorry for the late replies, archtool, but we've responded via email and I wanted to follow up with you here as well. We are answering everyone as fast as we can on a first-come, first-served basis wherever possible. I apologize for the wait.

Just to clarify, Tommy is correct about the license information. Only you can decide what is best for you. Personally, I would have stuck with my 1Password 3 license (50$) I purchased from the website and 1Password Pro (15$) for now (since these will cover my Leopard, Snow Leopard, and iOS devices) if I didn't need the Mac App Store version for work. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

If it helps at all, a single license sold on our site entitles you to use 1Password on all of your Macs, and we have versions that work on Lion all the way back to Tiger (oh my!)

Let me know if you have any other questions. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
