MAS 1P installed into a folder

So I bought 3.9 from the MAS and it installed itself into /Applications/1Password/1Password.app

Any idea why it created the extra folder? Is there any harm in removing that folder and putting the app into the Applications folder?

    Hi drizzler,

This can happen if you did not delete (or move) the 1Password.app file that you originally installed in /Applications. Trash the 1Password.app file that isn't in the folder (or move it to your desktop if you'd prefer to play it safe), then you can move /Applications/1Password/1Password.app to /Applications and launch it.
  • Before I made the MAS purchase, I moved my old 1Password app out of the /Applications folder. (I didn't delete it, just moved it elsewhere.) The MAS still put the new one into a folder.

No big deal. I just wanted to be sure I wouldn't break anything by moving the new one out of the new folder.
  • One small hiccup. After moving the app from /Applications/1Password to /Applications, the menu bar item "Open 1Password" stopped working. I had to launch 1Password manually, go into the preferences and toggle the setting for "Show helper icon in menu bar" (uncheck it and check it again.) Now it works fine.

This is standard Mac App Store behavior. If you have another installation of an app on your system, it will download the App Store version into a subfolder within your Applications folder. To prevent this, you need to delete the non-MAS application before installing the MAS version. To resolve, simply move the older version to the trash and then move the MAS app to the main Applications folder. Once the subfolder is empty, you can safely delete it as well.

It sounds like you got everything sorted out, but please be sure to move the old version of 1Password to the trash to prevent any future confusion. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

  • I had the same problem as the original poster.

I think the first steps in the guide for upgrading to the Mac App Store version are a bit confusing, see the following quote:
1. Make sure you have the latest version of 1Password installed by using 1Password > Check for Updates. This will install the latest version of the 1PasswordAgent process. The latest version will automatically remove itself when the Mac App Store version of 1Password is started.

    2. Move the old copy of the 1Password.app to Trash.

    3. Install 1Password from the Mac App Store.
In my opinion, it is not completely clear from this description to which version "the old copy of 1Password.app" in step 2 refers to. Is it the currently installed version, or is it the previously installed version that was upgraded in step 1. I thought it referred to the latter and since I had installed the latest version already, I didn't remove anything. Hence I ended up with 1Password installed in a subfolder.

To avoid this kind of confusion, I suggest to change the description of step 2 from "move the old copy of the 1Password.app" to "move the currently installed version of the 1Password.app".
