1Password from MAS, not finding my existing datafile in Dropbox

Hi,

I bought the MAS version of 1Password (had been using the non-MAS version).

I had not seen the FAQ and so had NOT updated 1Password before installing the MAS version (I think I was on 3.8.5).

Did not get any message relating to if you are an existing customer, so I went into preferences and selected use dropbox.

It created an empty file in the Dropbox root directory, whereas the previously created datafile is in a 1Password sub-directory.

There is no preference option to move it within the Dropbox folder area.

I looked on the forums and tried the option of removing/re-installing the new version - but no joy.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Can the MAS version only handle a datafile in the root Dropbox directory?

Or is there a fix on the way to handle this?

Some guidance on how to proceed would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

I, too, just purchased the MAS version, after being a long-time user. It did not ask me if I used Dropbox. It asked me to navigate to the file and I went to the one in the root of my Dropbox folder. Then the window disappeared and nothing else happened. When I go to Preferences, the "Use Dropbox..." button is greyed-out.

Is your Dropbox folder in the standard location (in your home folder)?

I am collecting all Dropbox related issues in our knowledge base:

  • Hi Roustem,

Yes - my Dropbox folder is in my home directory - ~/Dropbox .

Thank you. I should've replied earlier -- at the moment the Mac App Store version can only store data in the root of the Dropbox folder.

However, if you used the Dropbox before (with 3.8.5) then 3.9 should pick up the existing location, even if it was in a sub-folder in Dropbox.

ditto the problem of dhiebert and kimptoc, except on my home computer the install and update from 3.8.5 to 3.9 was transparent. On the work Mac I get a request to navigate to the 1Password file so I navigated to the 1Password.agilekeychain located in the root of my Dropbox. And then the application stopped doing anything visible

If I understand correctly, everything worked fine at home. At work, you weren't able to set up 1Password?

In this case, please see if this solution will help:

  • As its NOT working now, seems like the plan is:

So ... if I get the latest 1Password pre-MAS, open that up, make sure it works and then re-install the MAS version, it should all work right?

Sounds like its not worth waiting for an updated version via the MAS as its limitations mean 1Password still wont find the datafile.
  • Hi,

I tried what I suggested above, but its not really working. Looking at things I think I have misdiagnosed the problem.

Using 3.8.5, it detected the datafile in the Dropbox sub-folder and seemed to use it ok.

I deleted 3.8.5, installed the MAS version.

When I started the MAS version it gave no indication/dialog asking if I am an existing user, but it seemed to be using the correct Dropbox datafile.

However in preferences it did not point at the Dropbox folder. I tried the "use dropbox" button, but that created a small (3mb or so) datafile in the top of the ~/Dropbox folder.

Strangely 1Password did seem to have my passwords - so perhaps the preferences page was lying and it was using the correct datafile... (the correct one is around 14mb in size)

Hope that helps narrow down the problem.

    Regards,

    Chris

    Hi

I had the same problem as you guys, but I think I have solved it.

I first followed the link by Roustem above about moving my dropbox folder back to its default location. Mine wasn't.

I then closed 1 password down, opened it back up again and the "use dropbox button was useable. I clicked this and it re-synced the agilekeychain into dropbox, although it is now at the root of dropbox, I also still have a 1password folder with an older agilekeychain inside.

I am going to monitor for a day or so and make sure 1password on my iPhone is being kept up to date, and then I will delete the 1password folder.
  • I too am having a similar problem. Here is my scenario:

    - Per forum instructions, deleted old version of 1Password

    - Installed new MAS version

    - Launched new MAS version

    - Dialog prompted if I was new user or existing one

    - I selected existing and was prompted to local 1P data file

    - I pointed to the one in Dropbox (~/Dropbox)

Results: nothing happened or opened. Looking in the 1P Preferences, the Data file location is empty.

I tried numerous times, but no luck. Now I am stuck without access to my account passwords <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />.
