Why does the app store version install in a folder?

As title stated - when the 'regular' version installs in the root app folder?

The Mac App Store stubbornly refuses to overwrite an existing application and instead makes a new folder and installs the new application in that folder. If you had removed the existing 1Password application before installing the MAS version, it would not have placed it into a folder. It's covered in the MAS FAQ.
