Why the need for a restart with the latest 1Password update?

Was prompted to update to version 1.0.8.216 so I did.

Your installer is smart enough to prompt to close down IE, Explorer and any other browsers I might have running. Normally the point of reminding users to do this is to avoid a system restart.

Yet on two windows 7 machines, I've been prompted to restart at the end of the install anyway.

Can't see any pending file rename operations (often a reason for a restart) - but haven't really dug into the installer to see what it actually does.

1password still seems to function after the install (without a restart) - So I'm wondering if I really need to restart after all.

I know it's a niggling complaint, but poorly scripted installers which prompt for (probably) unnecessary restarts doesn't inspire confidence in the quality of your QA. Windows has had a "restart manager" API since Vista. IE and Chrome seem to support this, why not use that (where possible and fallback to prompting the user to close browsers that donn't support this API)

Alex, you have to quit your browsers (and close any Windows Explorer windows, because they use bits of IE) so the 1Password installer can update the extensions. That's nothing to do with avoiding the need to restart Windows.

As for the occasional requirement to restart Windows, I've seen it perhaps three times in the scores of updates I've installed (I install 'em all <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />). I'd put it at around 5%, overall. I don't why it has been necessary on those few occasions, but it seems unlikely to be "poorly scripted installer" or I'd have to restart after every update. Honestly, I just restart Windows.

Sorry not to have a more helpful answer.
