Documenting Positive experience

Just wanted to drop a note with my (positive) experience and comments...

I am running home and laptop Lion macs and a Snow Leopard work mac. On the two Lion machines, I removed:

1Password.app from Applications

~/Library/Application Support/1Password folder
I then installed 3.9 from the MAS and launched it. My 1password file is in Dropbox, (~/Dropbox/Library/1password/1password.agilekeychain) and this was picked up immediately. I followed the wizard, reset some tweaks (turning on helper, enable global unlock) and I was up and running.

Using Safari, Chrome and Firefox I had no problems, it all was working exactly as it was pre-MAS with 3.8.5.

On my work Snow Leopard machine, nothing changed. Passwords all still there, all still readable, all still functioning as they had been the day before.

I've still got my issues with subdomains on country-code-tlds, but that's another thread. As far as 3.9 and the MAS upgrade went, it was a bit of a manual process, but very smooth.

No comment required Agile folks, just wanted to pipe up so that people who are apprehensive about making the jump (like I was) know that there are some success stories out there as well as issues.

I similarly had absolutely no problems updating. Went very smoothly. Just deleted old copy of 1Password, downloaded new copy and it immediately picked up on my dropbox file and worked flawlessly. I did not delete the Application Support folder, but that did not seem to hurt anything. Should I have deleted it? Will it cause me issues in the future?

    Nope. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • xeyr, I take it you didn't have any problems like those who left comments in the App Store have been having? (problems like, the MAS version won't open keychain files created by previous versions - that seems like a very serious problem!!) I am afraid to upgrade to the MAS version because of what they said.

Go to the App Store, cue up 1Password, and read comments left by users 'Ptg4mac', 'Ben LaGuire', 'Ixcaneco', 'April King', 'Tom Kruk', etc. if you want to know what I mean.

Nope, didn't have any problems at all. I was fully updated on the 3.8.x line, if perhaps that makes a difference.

I wish those folks would have asked for help. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> It is a very easy to fix problem, and one you should not run into if you read the FAQ. Unfortunately we don't have any way to reach those folks. I'm not sure if most people realize or not, but comments on the App Store are essentially anonymous, at least to developers. We have no way of contacting someone who leaves feedback saying they have a problem.

Because the MAS reviews are almost anonymous, and many are very short, it's hard for me to take them seriously. I submitted a review and it wash't posted. I think it was too long, though it was only two paragraphs and a few bullets as a summary - It's a shame to castrate the reviews by requiring them to be short, IMO. Amazon reviews can be much longer and much more informative. It's also sad to see so many posts of clearly fixable matters.

So what is the method to fix the problem mentioned by the reviewers I quoted?

It is addressed in the FAQ: OFFICIAL ANSWERS: 1Password and the Mac App Store

Relatively few people experience the problem, and it is actually a bug on Apple's part. We've submitted it to them for review, and hopefully they will fix it for everyone. In the mean time, the FAQ has a fix.
