Should this 1P combo work? (DropBox syncing with (MAS 1P v3.9 + Lion) + (1P v3.8.5 on Snow Leopard)

I tried to be succinct in the Subject, but to elaborate, is the following a supported 1P configuration?

I have several Macs using 1P v3.8.5, all happily using DropBox for syncing. Two are running Lion and one Snow Leopard. Plus several iOS devices, all also syncing 1P data via DropBox. All is good.

My question is, should I be able to upgrade the two Lion Macs to the MAS (Mac App Store) 1P v3.9, while leaving the Snow Leopard Mac running 1P v3.8.5, and still successfully use DropBox to sync the 1P data between all three Macs and all iOS devices?

I'm questioning if this could/should work because, from posts & faqs, I understand that 1P v3.9 changes the data file format from previous versions, and other posts seem to be reporting problems in similar configurations. But I haven't explicitly seen from Agile if this configuration should be acceptable -- could an Agile person let us know explicitly if this should work?

(BTW, if this does represent a dangerous configuration, please put a check in the software so that years of passwords are not munged by one Lion Mac asynchronously upgrading to MAS 1P v3.9 while in a DropBox-synced 1P environment.)

Thanks.

  • That sounds like a potentially scary situation. Definitely backup your stuff first.

I'm not in the same boat as you, but I've been syncing 1P 3.8.5 via Dropbox between Lion and Windows 7 smoothly.

Now I'm syncing 3.9 (Lion) and 1.0.8.215 (Windows 7) OK.

Something's working right for me at least.

The data file format for 1Password did not change in version 3.9 — the version in the Mac App Store — from version 3.8 or any earlier version of 1Password 3. The permitted location of the data file did change, due to Apple's app rules for sandboxed applications. Why, I even still have my Lion system with 3.9 that syncs effortlessly with an older system that's still running 1Password 2.12.1 (using the Agile Keychain Format introduced in later versions of 1Password 2). And of course my iOS-based devices with the 1Password mobile app are syncing just fine too. 1Password for Windows still using the same data file you might ask? Why, of course! I just checked for any of Dropbox's "conflicted copy" items in my 1Password data file: none.

So Jeff, this should certainly work for any installation — even an "extreme" case like mine. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Sandy's situation, while not yet well understood, is not the norm.
