Can ANYONE explain this:
even though I did not open 1Password on my MacBook Pro, some part of OS X on the machine went out to my 1Password Dropbox master file and corrupted it to the point where the master password would not even open up 1Password on my Air
???

Hi Sandy,
I'm sorry for the delayed reply and to hear about all the troubles you have been having.
When you sync using Dropbox, all of the syncing is done through the Dropbox application itself, not 1Password. So it doesn't really matter if 1Password is running on each machine or not... if there is a change to the 1Password database it will be synchronized to all the other machines that use Dropbox syncing.
Note that Dropbox does keep some revision history, so if it does cause problems, you can restore to a previous version, right from within Dropbox:
