Potential user: workaround if can't install without admin?
I found out about 1Password when I recently started listening to Mac Power User podcasts. I would love to be able to get rid of the e-wallet app I've been using for years, my electronic equivalent of a huge janitor's keychain.
I really like the solution 1Password offers, the primary reason being that I don't change my passwords often enough and want to do so with strong passwords. Secondarily, like most people I would love the convenience of just using 1 password.
There are 2 things that are stopping me from purchasing it right now. If I can satisfy both, I'm definitely in:
1. Like many people, I don't have admin credentials to install it on my work PC (and will never be able to get them, as it's pretty tightly controlled here). I've seen earlier threads here on this topic, and understand that there's no portable version planned, so short of a web application- which could end up being blocked in our firewall anyway, is there a workaround that others have used? Being able to log into some critical things, like my bank account are critical whether I'm at work or at home.
2. My e-wallet may be tedious to use on a regular basis, but I at least have it with me wherever I go on my iPhone and other devices, which I manually sync. What do 1Password users do when they're online but not on one of their own devices? If I'm on vacation at an internet cafe on a rented PC and I want to send emails or check my bank account, how would I have access to my generated passwords?
Thanks in advance!

1. Our installer needs to install and register a few shared DLLs into your Windows system directory (and the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry key). This requires admin privileges. Once installed, every user can run 1Password (even those without admin privileges).
2. For this purpose, we have 1PasswordAnywhere: http://help.agilebit...ay-from-PC.htmlFlag 0 -
Welcome to the forum, Joe!
I hope you can persuade your IT folks to let you install 1Password on your work PC, too. If not, though, we think you'll find 1PasswordAnywhere a sufficiently useful alternative to offset that inconvenience.
Don't forget you can try 1Password free for up to 30 days, which should give you plenty of time to determine whether it's right for you, and that's really the deciding factor.Flag 0 -
Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately, getting our tech group to let me install it will be a no-go, as there's a very tight policy on non-sanctioned apps. Even web-based email (gmail, yahoo, etc), is blocked here, as are just about everything else that makes one's personal life more productive, like google docs. I also just recently learned about DropBox today. Just as I suspected, their website is blocked here too <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />
There's only one thing that could work that I can think of:
Would it work if I zipped up the Agile Keychain folder and sent to my work email as an attachment, then used 1PasswordAnywhere to access it? If so, that could be my solution. I'm not 100% sure that doing so would not violate my firm's information security policy, but I tend to think it would be ok. Does this sound like it will work as expected?
If that does work, I noticed on the 1PasswordAnywhere page that IE8 isn't supported. Doesn't it figure that that's our only 'sanctioned' browser. I do have a portable version of Firefox 3.6.13 though, so hopefully that would work.Flag 0 -

Sounds like you're working in Tehran. Or Pyongyang <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Yes, this should work.Flag 0 -

Ha! Even more repressive- a major US investment bank.
I'm pretty much sold, but still have a couple of questions to cover my bases after reading the FAQ (I'm the paranoid type):
It looks like the overall 1Password paradigm is that one has it installed on all his or her devices and keeps current on each via frequent synchronization, which conveniently happens in a way that is more or less transparent to the user. 90% of my online login credentials are strictly used by me, but the rest are shared by my wife, for things we keep in common, like our iTunes store account, our Amazon account, etc. I'm very tech savvy, but my wife isn't- she's the type that just expects things to 'work', so I assume I would need to train her how to, at a bare minimum:
1: Sync 1PW on her iPhone if a login fails, because I may have changed it after her last sync
2: Use 1PWAnwhere in case she is at someone else's computer
3: Maintain the master 1PW password with me (or can we both have our own master PW?)
Does this sound correct, or is there something else important I'm missing?
Secondly, if for some unforseen reason armageddon occurs and I need to revert, even if only temporarily, back to a manual non-1PW world, is it just a matter of getting a dump of all my passwords from 1PW and keying them in on each website?
Thanks for taking the time to respond,

Hi, Joe.
The synchronization isn't transparent at all. You can read all about it in the following documents.
The "big picture":
Windows-specific instructions:

After Armageddon, I'm thinking we'll have bigger problems than logging into web sites or remembering our passwords (except maybe to get into the armed defensive compound). If you just want a copy of your usernames and passwords, though, you can export them to delimited text, as described in the user's guide:

I hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any other questions. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />Flag 0 -

Correct. You can export your items from 1Password if you want, and then store them somewhere safe. However, we do not recommend this route because once exported your items are not encrypted.Flag 0
