Duplicate items and a focus bug

First, I get three choices for a software companies forums log in. First choice, no good, try again. Second choice, works. Comment, sign out, OK. Now, let's go edit/delete some of those invalid log ins.
Found the one that worked, I think. Found one that is obviously more than five years old, different domain, etc. Deleted, OK. Let's look at another (of seven remaining entries in 1P).
First, I go back and copy the password that I think is working so I can compare it to all the other entries. Click on anther entry to see what's in it...Up pops a "Let's get started" dialog! What? I've been using 1P for quite a few years, it's not that complicated, at least it didn't used to be...
Second, re-select "Logins," retype the companies name in the search box, re-select the item I want to edit, click the Edit button and notice it's not the same p/w. At least I don't think it is, the one I copied from before the "Let's get started..." window is now not in the Clipboard!
Third, go back to the (probably) good p/w, copy it, again, return to the maybe correct entry...and, up pops that @#*% "Let's get started..." dialog, AGAIN!
This time, I go back to Finder, delete the 3.8.5 version of 1P, which is not lose in the Applications folder, anyway, delete the 1P icon from the Dock, insert the 3.9 version in the Dock, restart the app and, finally, reselect the (probably) good login so I can recopy the p/w.
So, now what happens, the instant I access the second entry, I now get a "Web browser extensions" window listing Safari (installed) and Firefox (Install). Well, at least I'm not seeing the "Let's get started..." window anymore. Thank heaven for small favors. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_thinking.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='(think)' />
OK, why not go ahead and install the FF extension/add-on. Click the "Preferences" link, Safari opens your infamous Extensions list/download page. Click the 'download' FF extension button, get the almost un-noticeable animation that something is happening but no other feedback.
Open FF6 and find the "Tools-Addons" menu and see that there are two copies of the 1P 3.8.5 extension, both of which are greyed out, both of which have a note saying they are inoperable in FF6. Well, that was a fun detour/goose-chase, let's get back to editing those logins...
Of course, after the fifth or sixth time of getting dumped into the Web browser extensions window, I gave up. The editing function is totally useless at present. Perhaps turning OFF the hiding of passwords would help but the mere selecting of a login activates the totally useless extensions install window which doesn't even have anything I can install! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/emoticon-0132-envy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='(envy)' />
I'm sorry to say, but I am now in the market for a reliable, stable, simple replacement for 1P. You guys had a stellar run but someone has lost track of what had been the best password app for the Mac. I hope you can find your way back to that someday. I'll be keeping an eye out for news of your return from the abyss... <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

This is the only thing I can help you with. My workaround: Since the copy to clipboard doesn't work I always copy the username/password, etc., and then I open up OSX's "Text Edit" program. I paste it there and then it is available when I need to copy it and paste it into 1P for culling out logins. Hope this helps your clipboard problem.Flag 0 -
Hey there, xairbusdriver! I am sorry for the trouble. It sounds you you had the perfect storm and everything that could possibly go wrong did. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

It sounds like you had saved some superfluous Login items in 1Password. I do this myself from time to time, and it sure can be frustrating to try to find the 'right' one. Unfortunately, 1Password only knows what you tell it, and it has no AI for determining which is the best one out of many. If only...

I am sorry for the confusion. This isn't meant to insult your intelligence (although I know it can feel that way some times!) We just want to make sure that new users have something to introduce them to 1Password. Fortunately, we can just click past that.

Second, re-select "Logins," retype the companies name in the search box, re-select the item I want to edit, click the Edit button and notice it's not the same p/w. At least I don't think it is, the one I copied from before the "Let's get started..." window is now not in the Clipboard!

Sorry about this. I haven't been able to reproduce it, so if there was a bug with the clipboard copy we must have fixed it in an update. Just make sure 1Password is up to date (1Password menu > Check for Updates) and then install the latest extension as well (1Password menu > Install Browser Extensions).

I think this is due to 1Password 3.9 not being able to access your data, which needs to be either in the container or in the root of your Dropbox folder. If you are still having trouble with this, we can get this working for you, and after that you shouldn't have any more trouble.

Ahh! I think some of the trouble stems from having both present. While different versions can coexist (I am living proof!) getting it to work initially is a bit of a nuisance.

Unfortunately there isn't anything we can do about this. Browser download and installation behaviour is out of our hands... <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

Our new Firefox extension works with Firefox 6, 7 (current), 8, and beyond, in my experience. It sounds like there might be something amiss in your case, but the only way for us to know for certain what is going on is for us to get more information first, I am afraid. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

I am not clear about this: Are you having trouble editing items within the main 1Password application, or the browser extension?

I am so sorry for the experience you have had. If you're willing to try, I am confident that we can get you up and running yet. If you are still having trouble, could you please send us a Diagnostics Report? You can generate one using our standalone 1Password Troubleshooting tool. Just save the file and attach it to an email (support at agilebits dot com), and be sure to include any other details or screenshots you can as it will help us understand the problem better.
We will get this working for you. I look forward to hearing back from you. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />Flag 0 -

[blush] <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
My concern/frustration/problem is when editing a login from within the 1PW app, itself. I wasn't even aware that they could be edited in the browser extension.
It happened again just now. I had three identically named log-ins for the same site. All were within a five minute period (how/why I have no idea). Obviously, I accepted the 'name' supplied by 1PW which is usually the url. And I could/should have taken the time to delete/edit them as soon as they had been created. OTOH, why should that even occur? Simply appending the date/time to the name would be a handy and time saving capability for lazy (or forgetful) people like me. It might even save some time for people who are just plain busy?
The point is, when I performed a search for the three log-ins and then started to edit them (by appending the time of their creation) I managed to edit and save the first one. Immediately upon selecting the second one, I get dumped to the 'list of extensions available for any browsers found on my drive' page. All were listed as "Installed" since the one for Chrome had been done just yesterday.
1. Why should I get dumped to a page listing the available extensions if they are all already installed and your app knows it by posting that info on the screen?

2. Why can't I stay in the found items list after a search?
Since this is my first visit since making my rather long complaint, I use now see your suggestion to use the stand alone "Troubleshooting tool". I will see if I have that already or if it is on the 1PW site somewhere. BTW, I have removed "Display Browser Extensions" in the SideBar, that should avoid any possibility of accidentally selecting that item.
Have a great week-end! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Flag 0 -
Are you sure they are Logins and not Generated Passwords? It sound like they are, but this has led to some confusion in the past, to I just want to make sure. Generated Passwords will show up in their respective section in the sidebar with a keyhole icon (1Password > Preferences > General > Display in Sidebar > Generated Passwords).

Duplicate Logins can be deleted from within the extension, so it is easier to do this "inline" as you are browsing and notice them rather than having to launch the full application. Click the circled > or use the right arrow to view a Login's details, then click the Edit button in the top right corner. If you scroll down to the bottom of the Login's details, there is a Delete Login button.

Of course, it is easiest to simply not save duplicate Logins in the first place, so we try to require a bit of intentionality in saving new ones. There really isn't a way to save a new Login without clicking a button to confirm it, so please be careful that you are not saving Logins for sites where you already have a Login. If the autosave prompt is coming up for sites where you already have saved a Login, please let us know the URL. We would love to take a look at this and resolve the issue.
Also note that the date is saved with each Login. It is at the bottom of the Login in the main application but is not currently available in the extension.

The last item is a bug which will be resolved in the next update of 1Password. There are circumstances under which clicking the "Save" button to complete an Edit for an item in search results will "jump back" to the Browser Extensions section at the top of the source list.
I've heard from some folks that simply unchecking "Browser Extensions" in Preferences > General > Display in Sidebar (as you have done) will resolve this, but offhand I don't know that this is true 100% of the time. I myself have had better luck simply using the keyboard shortcut Command-E to start and finish an edit. The bug only seems to apply when clicking the "Save" button with the mouse in my experience. Hopefully that will help until the next version is released. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
There should have been a link to the Troubleshooting Tool in Brent's post, but I don't think it is necessary at this point.
I hope your weekend was as awesome as mine was! Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with.
