Browsers keep asking for the master password

Recently all my browsers have started to require the master password several times a day. It didn't do this before. I believe I've followed all the instructions but they seem quite convoluted and it is very possible I've overlooked something. What do I need to do to get it working the way it was before?

1Password used to be this nice, transparent utility that "just worked." Now it feels like a byzantine mess.

As an aside, now whenever I launch the 1Password application, it challenges me for the master password even though it already has it filled in from the keychain. Why is it asking me for the master password when it already has it? It's just one more impediment to using the program.

  • JimS, I have the same problem. On the previous version of 1Password, I could set the frequency of master password requests...every time, every 2 hours, once a day, etc. Now I can't do that and after about 1 hour, it again asks me to enter the master password. This is a pain iin the butt!

  • Thanks JimF.

At least I'll stop wasting time trying to fix it now and see if anyone replies with a solution.

    Hi JimS,

Please update both your 1Password app and your extensions for your browsers, this guide will explain how to do all of them.

After that, open one of your browser extension and go to its Setting tab and select "Enable Universal Unlock", this will ensure that all browsers and 1Password will be in same lock/unlock state.

Also, make sure 1Password's unlock settings via the 1Password Menu > Preferences > Security has "Disable automatic unlock for all applications" unchecked.

It should work much better now. I hope that helps, please let me know!
  • Thank you, Mike.

    I think it's working now.

I noticed in the 1Password preferences that Auto-Lock had been enabled on both my machine. I don't recall turning it on. But now that it's off, 1Password has stopped pestering me for the master password.
  • That's great, Jim! Thanks for the update! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

With Universal Unlock, 1Password works a bit differently than it did in the past. Now the extension and the main 1Password application will lock and unlock simultaneously (unless the "Disable automatic unlock ..." settings are checked in Preferences > Security).
