My Menubar in 1Password Application is dead!

I am a long, long time owner and user of 1Password for the Mac and depend on it.

I am suddenly having a terrible problem of an odd nature with your application.

It works fine in automatic mode in all three of my browsers.

But when I launch the 1Password application, only the menubar appears.

The Main Window does not appear, and calling it up from the Window in the menubar does nothing.

In fact, none of the commands in the 1Password menubar work anymore: Not About, not License, not Preferences, not Check for Updates, Not Go, Not Bring all to Front. Nothing.

Even the Quit command does not work. I have to force quit 1Password.

So I can't get into 1Password.

Right now, I want to retrieve a password from the Trash menu, but there are also other things I use only the application for and now I can't use it!

I have tried restarting, repairing commissions, replacing the 1Password Application from your website (3.8.5)

Nothing works!

I don't even know whether it is backing up anymore!

What should I do? Help!!!

I have been running Lion for about a month and it was working fine in Lion until about two days ago. I don't know what has changed, except that I tried Lion Tweaks about two days ago, didn't like it and turned it back off. It doesn't appear to have anything to do with 1Password.

I tried starting up from an old Snow Leopard partition, and 1Password App worked fine from there.

How can I fix the one I use on Lion?

It sounds like your 1Password installation is damaged, which is keeping it from starting. To resolve this:

    1. Download 1Password from our web site:

    http://agilebits.com/downloads

Click on the "Download Now" button under "1Password 3"

    2. Quit your web browser and 1Password, if it's running

    3. Drag the newly downloaded version of 1Password to the same location as any previous one -- replacing it

    4. Run 1Password at least once and then your web browser

Your information is stored in a data file separate from the application, so it will not be harmed by this procedure.

Thank you for trying to help. I appreciate it.

However, I tried that yesterday, first with the latest release and then with the latest beta.

    It didn't help.

Then I created a test User account, and opened 1Password there without any problem.

So it is something corrupted in my main User account or some piece of 1Password's files somewhere on my main User account.

I will be most grateful for any follow up help - not being able to get into "The Vault," and not being able to quit 1Password without a Force Quit is very frustrating and worrisome to me.

    Hi Nate,

Sorry to hear that did not work for you. What I would suggest at this point...

    Quit 1Password.

Backup your Agile Keychain. By default it is stored in ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain

Once you have that safely stored elsewhere, delete the ~/Library/Application Support/1Password folder. You can access it by opening Finder and selecting Go > Go to Folder and pasting in

    ~/Library/Application Support

    then hitting the Go button.

Deleting the ~/Library/Application Support/1Password folder will wipe out all of your user specific preferences that could be causing this issue.

When you launch 1Password for the first time, it will prompt you to find your existing keychain. Instead, quit the application again and move the Agile Keychain file back to ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain

On successive relaunches you should not be prompted for the keychain, it will pick up the one that you put back in ~/Library/Application Support/1Password

    Ben,

I carefully followed each of these steps:

    Quit 1Password.

    ----------DID IT.

Backup your Agile Keychain. By default it is stored in ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain

    ----------DID IT.

Once you have that safely stored elsewhere, delete the ~/Library/Application Support/1Password folder. You can access it by opening Finder and selecting Go > Go to Folder and pasting in ~/Library/Application Support, then hitting the Go button.

    ----------DID IT.

Deleting the ~/Library/Application Support/1Password folder will wipe out all of your user specific preferences that could be causing this issue.

    ----------I HOPED IT WOULD

When you launch 1Password for the first time, it will prompt you to find your existing keychain.

----------ON THE FIRST LAUNCH, NOTHING HAPPENED; ON THE 2ND LAUNCH IT DID ASK ME EITHER TO FIND IT OR CREATE A NEW ONE.

Instead, quit the application again and move the Agile Keychain file back to ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain

----------SO THEN I QUIT AND LOOKED FOR THE NEW APPLICATION SUPPORT FOLDER FOR 1PASSWORD AND IT WAS NOT CREATED SO THERE WAS NOWHERE TO PUT 1Password.agilekeychain BACK IN!

TRIED THIS THREE MORE TIMES, INCLUDING TRYING LOGOUTS, RESTARTS ETC. NO NEW A/SUPPT FOLDER!

ON THE FOURTH TIME, I CREATED A NEW "VAULT" WITH THE SAME PASSWORD, THEN QUIT. NOW IT FINALLY CREATED A NEW APPLN/SUPP FOLDER SO I PUT MY OLD AGILE KEYCHAIN BACK IN.

On successive relaunches you should not be prompted for the keychain, it will pick up the one that you put back in ~/Library/Application Support/1Password

----SORRY TO REPORT THAT ON RE-LAUNCHES I HAVE THE SAME OLD PROBLEM. NO ACCESS TO THE VAULT AND NO OTHER MENU COMMANDS IN THE APPLICATION WORK.

MY PASSWORDS STILL WORK IN SAFARI, SO I ASSUME THEY WILL STILL WORK IN F/F AND G/C BUT THE PROBLEM REMAINS UNSOLVED.

Since I am now unable to get into my Vault, I am unable to retrieve my non-browser passwords. Can't get into The Apple App Store, can't get into the iTunes Store, etc. etc.

Up til now, I would look them up in my 1PW Vault, copy then paste them where needed.

Could the 1Password.agilekeychain file itself be corrupted? Would it help if I replaced from one a few days earlier with Time Machine?

Nope it can't be that because I just put a copy of my 1Password.agilekeychain into my Library/Application Support/1Password folder in my Test User account on this same Mac and 1Password opens there with my full Vault just fine!

So there must be some kind of conflict on my Main User account? Or what?

On the other hand, Safari is spitting out my passwords just fine from within the browser. I would hate to lose that.

But I can't get into my Vault!!! Still need help.

Hello? Are you still out there?

    Marty,

I have thanked you privately by email but I think it fitting to also thank you publicly for solving my problem since I started this public thread with a request for help and it would be unfair to leave this thread in a condition where it would appear as if AgileBits left my request for help unanswered and unresolved.

You did it! Deleting and re-creating a fresh ws.agile.1Password.plist, as you suggested, appears to have solved the problem! Thank you SO MUCH for sticking with me until the problem apparently has been resolved.

What a relief! I've been with 1Password since 2006 and I know you are going through a lot of problems with a lot of users right now, many of whom are talking about jumping ship to other products, but the fact that you gave me this personal attention and stuck with me until it was solved, not giving up on my problem and not going silent after the first tries failed, really means everything to me, and I am happy and relieved to stick with 1Password and AgileBits. (And to do my part to encourage others to do so.)

    Thank you!!!

(My followup questions have been included in my latest email to you, and I will look forward to your email reply.)

    Best wishes,

    Nate
