Start Menu location.

Every time I apply an update to 1Password for Windows, you create a new 1password folder in the Start Menu/Programmes, rather than using the location of the curent version.

Can you either Prompt for location of Start Menu items at install time, or automatically place them in the location of the existing 1password folder.

I'd rather not have the 1st item on my Start Menu/Programmes to be 1Password. Prefer to tuck it away somewhere less visible.

Cheers

  • Hi, Kev.

It sounds like you're renaming the default folder name in the "start" menu. Is that correct?

If you're changing the start menu folder during the initial setup (step #3 of our wizard is allowing you to do this), then 1Password will remember this setting and future updates will go into that start menu folder. However, when you change the start menu folder after the installation, then there is no way for 1Password of knowing where it is, and it will assume your start menu folder is named "1Password" (as this is our default).
  • Kev, the result of what Stefan has explained above is that you pretty much have to decide when you first install 1Password for Windows what folder name you want 1Password to use in the "start" menu.

As you suggest, one alternative would be to require you to select an existing folder or create a new one on every update, and that may be something we can look into, in some future release.

This is what our updater was doing before, but someone said we should skip those questions, and simply repeat the decisions that were made before.

    To paraphrase a famous comment:

"You can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time."
  • Related to the above. I have recetly reinstalled onto a new laptop (uninstalled on old laptop). At install time I was sure I pointed to the start menu folder I wanted.... but Nope. The first update has recreated a root level '1password' start menu entry. So ... are you sure the install remembers previous settings ?

I will try again.. but I'm not yet convinced.

Let me know if you find anything reproducible. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
