Why NOW? [Answered]

I've read a ton of threads over the last week or so but I have yet to see an answer from Agile to a very simple question in regard to the move to MAS.

The question is:

WHY does this move to the MAS have to occur NOW?? (i.e. why couldn't it have waited until the 4.0 release)

    Good question.

They could have easily waited until 4.0 and then have an initial sale.

And they could have then, when 4.0 appeared on MAS, email all us notifying of the sale and how 4.0 onward the app will be on Lion only.

Yes, the reason behind Agilebits recent actions is a mystifying one.

Very few commercial companies flag their intentions way in advance of the event. Whilst some of the Mods here and indeed some of the users of the product try to come across as a sort of club {I've seen posts here that refers to members) We're using a product, there are no members. So Agile have made a commercial decision and are small enough to justify their decisions on a daily basis.

When Lion came out - well look at the posts on all the boards. No one made people upgrade to Lion, no one made us upgrade to 1P via the Mac Store. Why people try to understand a companies reasons for taking a commercial decision - the post above says 'mystifying' - well it's not for us to know. Have you never made a business decision where you've said 'this is the way forward and this is the way we're going to do it?

    I asked this same question.

Our developers really need time to focus on... development. They were spending far too much time maintaining servers, writing code for out own internal store (i.e. reinventing the wheel). They really want to focus on the remaining issues with the browser extensions and were not given the ability to do so with our previous setup. The transition to MAS (NOW) is one step towards what they needed to regain their focus.

When you treat me like an idiot, it makes me want to respond in kind but I'll refrain. (I expect more from you Ben) <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I've read this multiple times in other threads and it does NOT answer the simple question I posed.

Also, I know firsthand that Roustem spent more time than he wanted dealing with servers. However, the store code was written many years ago and was pretty much all done by Dave. There were some updates quite awhile back but looking at what is there now, I don't see a considerable amount of time and effort being spent there in coding. I'm obviously not familiar with the current interworking at Agile but I was at one time and "writing code for our internal store" was never a huge chunk of time for anyone after the initial deployment and later re-design. Chad (he still around? --- I would guess yes) doesn't work on either. Jamie was brought in to do Ruby on Rails stuff like the store.

Regardless, of the details the argument still does not answer WHY NOW???

Certainly not trying to treat you like an idiot, but the above is the answer I was given and accepted (knowing the internals).

    Also: yes, Chad is still around. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Fine, so can we get a direct answer from Dave or Roustem?

    1. We don't know when 4.0 is hitting ....Agile has an idea but they're not saying anthing.

    2. 10.7.2 and iOS 5 will be available roughly in a month and both support iCloud.

So I guess we have a scenario that suggest

if 4.0 is due before years end then waiting would be feasible.

If 4.0 isn't due until 2012 then it's more likely Agile would want to leverage iCloud (Lion and iOS 5) with a 3.x branch.
  • What was the rush to get to the MAS ?

    Mangoes,

I'm sorry if that answer isn't what you wanted to hear, but that is the best answer I have.
