1Password for iPad Status - News & Updates

Hey Guys and Gals,

Thanks so much for your support during the iPad launch! Predictably, we have a few issues, and we'll post those issues, along with fixes (where applicable), and other information here. You can also check our FAQs where we've started some Hot Issues.

Here's where we are so far:

1) Sync Existing causing crash - When you choose "Sync Existing", the iPad crashes. It crashes again after relaunch. After launching again, the database appears, but without data. The temporary workaround is to go to Settings > Sync then sync manually. Everything should be ok from there. A fix has been submitted to Apple and is pending approval.

2) Purchased Wrong Version - Because there are multiple versions of 1Password Touch in the App Store, there has been some confusion over which version to buy. We tried to get the word out on our blog, and via Twitter and Facebook, but we still missed some of you, and we're sorry about that. Here is a link for the iTunes Customer Service Support Form so you can tell them what happened and request a refund if you bought the iPad app when you already had the Pro app. We've heard from a few folks who have had success with this.

The good news for those who haven't purchased yet is that, if you have 1Password Touch Pro, you don't have to buy anything! We've submitted an update to Apple which will be a Universal Binary and will work on all your devices, including the iPad! There's more info about this in this blog post.

3) The Go & Fill Arrow beside the logins URL is broken when in portrait mode. We will get this fixed soon, but please use landscape mode for now.

4) Trouble syncing with your Mac - Some folks reported early on that they had trouble syncing with their Mac. Most of these folks had not yet upgraded their Mac app to v3.1 which is required for syncing. If you haven't yet updated to v3.1, be sure to do that. To be sure you're up to date, run 1Password on your Mac, select 1Password > Check for Updates, and you'll be good to go.

5) Syncing across multiple devices - As far as the iPhone OS is concerned, all of our apps are completely separate. As such, they cannot share data. Therefore, in order to upgrade or migrate, you will need to either re-sync to your Mac or use the backup and restore method for PC. We are working on more flexible syncing options for you, including enabling 1Password to sync with MobileMe or any other WebDAV-enabled service so you will be able to easily back up your information.

6) Editing doc is causing crash in some instances. Fix submitted and pending approval.

We will have updated information on our blog, so you can check it or subscribe to the RSS feed. We'll have info via our Twitter and Facebook iterations, too. And, of course, we'll be keeping a close watch on the questions here as well. You can also email us a Support Request.

We sincerely appreciate the support most of you guys are showing us. Thanks for realizing that we really didn't have secret iPads on which to test everything ;) We had simulators, just like all the other devs. While that was great, nothing beats the real thing. We've already found and squashed a few bugs, and a new update is pending Apple's approval. Let us know what you think, and enjoy those iPads! Cheers!

Cindy does this mean that 1Password for Mac will not sync with the IPhone and the IPad right now????

I'm new to App Store as well as iPad. I already purchased 1Password (not the Pro version) for my iPad. Now I am reading I need to update it by going to the App Store to get the latest version. What are the steps for doing this without being charged a second time for the app?

FYI, I'm having a horrible time syncing existing data from my Mac G5. Shows it takes 4 steps to do this. Doesn't work. Downloaded a 26-page PDF off the discussion forums and have not yet had time to try out the very obtuse sounding set of instructions. (26 pages? Get real!)

Very frustrated and unhappy camper at the moment.

Apple don't charge for re-downloads. You can go ahead and download the same app (Make sure its not the Pro since you only bought the standard).

As long as you use the same iTunes account that you used when you first acquired the app, and you get the exact same version, you won't be charged again. Here is Apple's info about it.

We definitely don't want you to be frustrated. There can be many reasons why the sync process doesn't work. Most often, it's a network configuration issue, but again, lots of things it could be...that's why the forums info is so lengthy...it's comprehensive. We have a scaled down Troubleshooting Guide here that might help.

You're also welcome to send us an email to support@agile.ws and we'll try our best to help get you up and running (or syncing) there ;) If you do, please link to your forum post so we can "connect the dots".

The Trouble Shooting Guide you are referring to is the 26-page document to which I referred. I will try to work my way through it, after which I will email support. FYI, the iPad and computer are accessing the same wireless home network. Browser and OS is totally up-to-date.

I'm sorry there is no telephone support.

I'm wondering why it isn't possible to handle syncing with an iPad <> Computer via USB connection? (same as iPad <> Computer for iTunes). Would be so simple!

We're a fairly small team, spread across the globe, so it's very hard for us to provide telephone support to our users. We personally find that e-mail is much easier, we can provide you with better instructions that you can go through in your own time.

Apple don't allow 3rd party developers to use the USB cable for any form of syncing or data transfer like iTunes does, I'm not entirely sure why this is the case. Some developers found a 'cheat' to workaround this but Apple quickly discovered this and either pulled the apps or asked the developers to remove the feature, of course we didn't want this to happen for our users so we played by the rules with Wi-Fi syncing.

In the future though, we will be adding support for syncing using the free and secure Dropbox service which means the sync will be automatic and won't require you to use the Wi-Fi method as you have to do right now.

    Hope that makes sense,

Something must have changed or there's a workaround, because GoodReader is now syncing via USB again.
Luckily, this is no longer an issue. New version of GoodReaderUSB program transfers files directly into application sandbox, making it perfectly legitimate for the App Store.
I saw this and was wondering how they could actually do this trick, I must test it out as I happen to own GoodReader for my iPad. The fact of the matter is that until now it hasn't been possible and we've stayed away from trying features that just don't work. As I mentioned in another thread, Dropbox syncing is coming soon, and this will make the whole sync process much simpler, and with Dropbox using SSL and 256-big AES encryption it really is a secure way to sync your data.

    They use iTunes File Sharing:

That's not something that would work for us, to my knowledge. We sync the individual items inside the database, which this process would handle as individual files. There is no mention of the security of this, or any encryption. It's fine for things like game saves, documents, e-books, etc.

So I can only back up entire files, and they are already encrypted.

Also, I can only really do it from the phone to the pad, since the pad doesn't support the master password field. Everything I create on the pad has the master password enabled whether I want it to be or not. This method of syncing requires that I use a weak numeric password on the ipad. Will dropbox sync work around that?

These are not really methods of syncing, just backups that users can use as a workaround for "syncing" between the iPhone and iPad without a Mac. Gita's referring to the true syncing between a Mac and a device or another Mac. Items are synced per item.

In its final implementation, yes, but for the initial release of Dropbox syncing, you will still have to have a Mac to get it started. Eventually, it will be possible to start syncing with Dropbox from scratch straight from your iOS device.

    I hope that helps.
