Possible workaround for Dropbox Folder Location

Hi all

For those of you struggling with moving your Dropbox location to the ~/Dropbox, the following *seems* to be working for me:

I have my main Dropbox folder at /Volumes/TrueCrypt/Dropbox. This is synced by Dropbox and working fine.

I created a dummy Dropbox folder in ~/Dropbox, SOLELY for 1Password. Note that this is NOT my real dropbox folder, and is NOT being automatically synced by Dropbox by default (we'll come to that later).

I've set 1Password to move my keychain to Dropbox. This creates the 1Password.AgileKeyChain app/folder in the dummy Dropbox folder (i.e. ~/Dropbox/1Password.AgileKeyChain), and also puts the .ws.agile.1Password.settings file in to this dummy dropbox folder.

I then created a symlink to my 1Password.AgileKeyChain in the dummy Dropbox folder, and placed this in my real Dropbox folder (i.e. /Volumes/TrueCrypt/Dropbox/1Password.AgileKeyChain), ensuring that the name of the symlink is exactly the same as the original, AND that it is in the same relative path from the top of the Dropbox folder). This will then ensure that Dropbox syncs changes to the 1Password database as and when they occur.

Finally, I copied the settings file .ws.agile.1Password.settings from the dummy dropbox folder to the top level of my REAL dropbox folder.
The above appears to be working for me, syncing both ways from both my MBP and my iPhone, but time will tell!

Hope it helps...

Thanks for posting this tutorial, smar! I'm glad things are working well for you. This is not supported, so you are "on your own" in this configuration — be careful with those symlinks. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' /> This should be pretty foolproof, but I've been known to play the fool more than once or twice.

For others who wish to "void their warranty", so to speak, this is an interesting experiment. All I would add is:

    6. Backup!

    7. Backup!

    8. Backup!
