updating a password in google chrome
Hi,
I was wondering what the correct procedure is to change a password on a site using 1password in google chrome. I have tried it a few times and I seem to end up going round in circles.
Typically, I go to the 1password extension for chrome and, got to generator and generate a password, then use 1password to fill it in on the change password page. but once i do that I find it impossible to get 1password to let me save the newly generated password with my login name for that site.
any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason

Hi David,
Thanks for your response. So am I correct in understanding that the way to do this is to generate the password in the chrome plugin, then go to 1password app and store the password and login for the site?
It is a bit confusing that I have to change to the app. Why can I not add a login via the chrome plugin?

i just tried again to reset my password on github and again, i just go around in circles.
the problem is when i reset my password at github, 1password remembers the pw but no login for the github site. adding the username login to the 1password entry to github seems to be impossible.
This is really odd as I find the rest of 1password works so well, but this use case is very confusing and difficult.Flag 0 -

No, this isn't the procedure.
It works in Chrome, but it is cumbersome. My advice is to go into IE or Firefox, and follow these steps:
1. on the change password page, have 1Password generate a new strong password
2. logout, and then go to the login page
3. enter username
4. bring up the 1Password extension and click on the "Fill Last Generated Password" button
5. press Enter/Return, and the 1Password auto-save prompt should appear. From here, you can replace your existing login item
Note: if the auto-save prompt does not appear in step #5, you might need to bring up the 1Password extension, and click the "Save Login..." button. From here, you can replace your existing login item.Flag 0 -

No. It works in Chrome too, but it is cumbersome. That is why my advice is to use IE *or* Firefox *in this particular case*.Flag 0 -
IE shouldn't be recommended to anybody, imo. It should be ended like Flash on mobile <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />Flag 0

I'm not necessarily recommending IE here. I'm trying to help Jason and solve the problem he's having.

Your feedback is not constructive to this topicFlag 0 -
Talking about being constructive on the topic: Wouldn't it be more constructive to actually solve the original posters issue in 1P-chrome extension rather than directing him at other browsers?
Shouldn't long-term solutions be prioritiesed above short-term solutions?Flag 0 -

We have a new extension for Chrome in the making, and it is coming soon.

In this situation, my #1 priority is to get this user up-and-running.Flag 0 -
Sure thing. Now offense. You guys are awesome although lately some strange company decisions have been made. Also let me tell you that I'm running Chromium 17 dev build and 1P extension is working. That is great news and has not been the case for a very long time. I'm glad it's working now.Flag 0

No offense taken, LosInvalidos.
As for Chrome 17 working, that's good news, but it has more to do with what Google has or hasn't (yet) changed between the current "official" release and any Beta, Canary, or Dev builds. As you know, we confirm compatibility with only the current non-Beta versions of the supported browsers.
Thanks for letting us know, though!Flag 0 -

Hi David,
Thanks for getting back to me.
I understand that you recommend I do it in firefox or IE, but I really would prefer to do it in chrome. Your instructions imply that it can be done in chrome. Could you post those instructions please?
I also note that you say a new chrome plugin will be coming out soon. is there any kind of ETA on that?
Thanks,

Try this, Jason.

On the Logins tab of 1Password preferences, make sure the auto-submit option is disabled.

In Chrome, visit the site's login page.

Use 1Password to fill the login form; then submit the login form.

Visit the site's change-password page.

Invoke the 1Password extension, and copy the current password for the site.

On the site's change-password page, use Ctrl+V to paste the copied value into the "current password" field of the change-password form.

In the 1Password extension, select the Generator tab.

Use the generator to create a strong password that meets the site's password requirements for length, format, and character type.

Select (highlight) the generated password, and press Ctrl+C.

On the site's change-password page, use Ctrl+V to paste the new password into the "new password" and "confirm new password" fields of the change-password form; then submit the change-password form.

When the site has accepted the new password, log out of the site.

Return to the site's login page, and use Ctrl+V to paste the new password (still on the Windows clipboard) into the password field of the login form.

If necessary, copy the username value from the 1Password extension, and paste the copied value into the username field of the login form; then submit the login form.
Nearly three times as many steps as in FF or IE. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> As Stefan said, it's cumbersome.Flag 0
