Share a portion of keychain

Hi there

I've had an appcrush on 1Password for a while. Thank you for such an awesome piece of software.

A little while ago I started sharing my keychain between computers using Dropbox. Works great. Now I'm at a new technical point of discovery.

I have a business partner who is purchasing 1Password. As it stands, my keychain has personal and business credentials and sensitive information in it. Is it possible for me to "share" certain contents of my 1Password database with my business partner?

Thanks for any help :)

Hello, Erik. Thanks for the kind words and welcome to the forums! If you want to share particular items with someone else and keep them in sync, this is not currently possible. If you want to share particular items with your business partner, one time only, to get them up and running with their own 1Password data file, the best way to do this would be to locate the items in question and click File > Export Selected > 1Password Interchange File. Your partner can import that file into 1Password.

Once you're done, please be sure to securely delete the .1pif. It's the best way to export/import data, but it's not encrypted. To securely delete it, drag it to your OS X Trash and click Finder > Secure Empty Trash.

Sorry for the delay, I expected an email alert when someone responded. I've "subscribed" now :)

    That's what I meant. Bummer.

Has anyone else requested such a feature?

    Hi Erik,

We've seen a few requests for this, so it's certainly on the requested features list, of course we can't say if and when we'll be able to implement this. Thanks for the feedback though, good to know this would be usueful for you too.

Why not keep two keychains? A keychain with your business passwords in a shared Dropbox folder, and a keychain with your personal passwords in an unshared folder? Awkward, but perhaps better than nothing.

Can you use multiple keychains with a single instance of 1Password though?

Yes you can, but the problem lies in its always up to you to remember which keychain you are using. There is no waring etc if you save personal data in a work keychain or vise versa. Your boss could have access to anything you accidentally save in the work keychain.

I have not used it and I only saw it mentioned 1 time in passing but you may want to give rooswitch a look. I have read posts where it was problematic with apps like 1P in that you always had to restart the app etc in order to actually make the change work. Personally I would just try the remembering thing myself.

If you do try rooswitch Warning make sure you have a good data backup in a safe place (of the keychain) before attempting to use it.

Within a single instance? No. Technically, you can switch between multiple data files by simply quitting 1Password and double-clicking the data file you want to use, but this is neither supported nor recommended. Here's one scenario: you switch between your private data file and your shared one, and 1Password creates a backup of your data file, per its settings. Now you've got a shared data file mixed in with your private backups. It's easy to tell them apart if they contain a very different number of items, but what if they've both got, let's say, 25-30 items? If restoring a file from backup, now you have no way of knowing which data file is which. Further, if you keep your data in sync using Dropbox or a similar solution, you're now sync'ing the current data file with your other devices. We cannot predict what would happen if you switched to your shared data file on computer 1 while computer 2 is using your private date file, both sync'ed using Dropbox.

    Thanks G

I was thinking the double click thing but something happened between the brain and the keyboard. Very well put.

Also thanks for the note on the 2 computers running 2 different keychains synced via dropbox, with the new 1psyncfolder this is a very real consideration.

I think I will stay away from mentioning this in the future. Hopefully in the future the team will get a chance to revisit the subject of shared keychains

You still teach me new things

I work at an agency and we manage a ton of client websites. Right now we keep all the admin passwords on a spreadhseet, but it would be epically awesome if 1password could manage all of that collaboratively.

I know I can share a passwords file with dropbox (with 2-way syncing, which is great), but is there any way that I can separate my private passwords from the agency passwords? Can 1password handle two password files? If so, can I choose which book to save to when saving passwords? Are there any other options?

    Thanks.

    Hey Sam,

It was hard to pick which thread to merge your post with since this has come up a number of times. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

I chose this one since it contains some useful advice about doing this manually. At this time, Dropbox syncing only supports one keychain per Dropbox account, and there is not an easy way to switch or use multiple Dropbox accounts in their own application at this time. This is something we are excited about in the future, but I do not have a time frame to give you right now.

I hope that helps. Please see the above information about transferring data between data files.

    Thanks!

I think this would be great. I need it now, but understand that something like this could take time. In the meantime as a stop gap could you implement the iPhone app structure for the Mac OS and Windows OS programs?

What I love about the iPhone app structure is that if I have selected High Security (Master Password), I need to have my PIN entry code and the Master password to see the password for anything that is set as Low Security (4-Digit Code) you can see the password once you have logged into the iPhone App.

This could work the same way with the Mac and Windows OS apps, this then means I could sync my entire Agile Keychain via Dropbox and if there is any password that I don't want my work mate to see - I just set it at High Security (Master Password). It is not ideal but I know that he could not access any password I didn't want him to - I give him the 4 Digit and away we go.

This I believe also improves the 1Password Mac app, as I can have a short code for when I use it in my browser, then if any password needs to be seen having knowledge of the Master Password is the only way. (This is why I like the iPhone app so much, 4 Digit codes can be broken but access to important information can be guarded by the Master Password.

Hope this makes sense, really believe that this could work in the short term and give you time for a more permanent solution. Love the product, keep up the Great work!
