To quit Dropbox when it does not appear in the menubar, but its process is still running. This may happen occasionally for various reasons.
1) The Dropbox menubar icon is hidden and you cannot see it. :
This is an easy fix Download an app I use called Menuola. http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/25456/menuola All the app does is well make the menubar wording list smaller so you can see hidden apps. I have it set up with Quicksilver and use a keyboard shortcut. Once launched the menubar looks like this. (Picture 1) Allowing you to see any hidden Menubar apps.
It will appear in the dock when launched. If you need to hide the wording again simply click on it again. This can be repeated as needed. Real world example of my menubar (Picture 2) with Menuola running.
2) The menubar icon is not showing but you downloaded an installer from the Dropbox site and when attempting to install / update your installation you are met with this message (Picture 3) or maybe this message also (Picture 4)
This is also relatively easy fix.
a ) Open the utilities folder. (Lion) (Picture 5) when Finder is frontmost.
b ) Locate activity monitor and launch it (Picture 6)
c ) Once it launches you will see this window. (Picture 7) *Please note your running app will in all likely hood be very
different than mine.
d ) Look through the list and find Dropbox and select it. (Picture <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/emoticon-0103-cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='8)' />
e ) Click the quit button at the top of the Activity monitor window. You will be prompted to verify you wish to quit Dropbox.
(Picture 9) Select Quit
g ) If you Look at the window now Dropbox has disappeared from the running apps list. (Picture 10)
Dropbox now has been closed. If you were trying to update please try the install again
