This sounds like expected behavior. 1Password for Windows will only open the URL in the browser you specify in preferences:

To fill the Login, you will need to either press Ctrl+\ or select it from the list in the browser extension. This assumes that you are up to date with 1Password and the browser extension, though, so please do follow the instructions my colleagues provided above. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Alternatively, you can select the Login from the list in the browser extension to begin with — no need to launch the main 1Password application. To help you select it even faster, open the extension and begin typing the first few letters of the Login title to narrow down your search. Press Return when the Login is highlighted. (You can use the arrow keys to change your selection.)

    Indeed.

Here's the pertinent quote from the heading Double-clicking a listed Login in Using a saved Login item in the Tutorials section of the user's guide:
Note that you’ll still need to fill and submit the login form at that URL.
I hope you won't mind my taking this opportunity to remind everyone that we recommend users take a few minutes to read the Introduction, Getting Started, and Tutorials sections of the user's guide. They're short, and they'll give you the information you need to get up to speed quickly. As you use 1Password for Windows, we believe you'll find the FAQ section to be a useful resource, too.

Might I make a suggestion to the Agile team?

The original poster was a Mac 1Password user (who likely read the documentation on the Mac side at one point or another) and came to the Windows version reasonably expecting similar behavior in the application. In the Mac version, when you click the button to open the URL from the application the login is filled in without using the browser buttons.

Rather than expecting users to re-read the FAQ/documentation for 1Password for Windows if they're already familiar with the Mac tool, would it be possible to publish a short article somewhere of "What's different about 1Password for Windows" (I'm thinking way more detail than found here). Perhaps "Getting Started with 1Password for Windows if you already know 1Password for Mac" that goes through all those things large & small that are different or not yet implemented/complete. I would gladly read a document like that from first word to last than be expected to read documentation that is 90% familiar to me based on my usage of the product on the other platform, looking for just those nuggets that are mis-aligned. Your existing documentation is written as an introduction/guide for folks brand new to the 1Password concept, which isn't a fair assumption.

Just a thought. And apologies if such document already exists...I did look for it first before making the suggestion.

Great idea, Judi. If it weren't for the nearly constant need to update the documentation with new features and tips, an article like that probably would exist already. (We're a very small team.) In fact, it has always been my intention to add a comparison table to the article you linked in your post. I may even get a chance to do that, yet.

As for the user's guide being geared to new users, that's definitely true for the Introduction and Getting Started sections; and it's true, to a lesser extent, for the Tutorials section, as well. Those entire sections represent only about 10 or 15 minutes worth of reading, though, and we still think that's a good investment of anyone's time. It's the FAQ where we expect experienced users (and transfers from 1Password for Mac) to spend most of their "getting help" time, and that's where most new tips and tricks get added.

Thanks for the suggestion, Judi. We'll continue trying to keep the documentation as good as the software. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
