1Password for Windows and Safari

Hi!

Although I'm on Windows, I like Safari and I'm a little sad that you're not allowing this browser in 1Password for Windows. Is there any plan to make it available soon?

Anticipated thanks.

On Windows, we support Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome. That is 95% of all browser usage out there. Safari does not justify the development efforts on Windows (yet).

    Welcome to the forum, dmf!

Note that Safari is on the "short list" of enhancements planned for future releases of 1Password for Windows, though there's no information about which enhancements will be implemented, in which order, or when they might become available.

    Thanks for your patience!

  • I have the same concern. I just buy 1password and a macbook.

I also have an iPhone and a PC.

I can sync everything in 1password via dropbox, perhaps I cannot use Safari on windows because there is not 1password for safari windows. I need to sync all favorites between iphone (only Safari), mac and PC. The best would be to use Safari everywhere, but I can't and only because of 1Password.

Now, what can I do to be notify once 1password will be available for windows?

    Thank you.

Each update of 1Password for Windows comes with release notes. When you see the message about availability of an update, click the "what's new" button.

You can also see a complete history of release notes in the thread "stuck" at the top of this forum:

Funny for a company that started by making Mac OS X software that seams like a blase answer. Most of your starting customers for "1Password for windows" are Mac owners using Bootcamp and iPhone/iPod/iPad owners. How about caring a little about customer needs? I have 1pass for mac, iPhone, and iPad and love them. I have to use Windows for work, but Until you have a safari extension I am not buying this!

We certainly understand that everyone has his or her favorite browser—we'd support them all, if that were possible; but we're a small team, and we need to apply our resources to achieve the greatest benefit for the most customers. 1Password for Mac has robust and active support and development of the extension for Safari. It isn't been our perception, though, that most 1Password for Windows users are 1Password for Mac users, too, or that they're wanting to use Safari, rather than one of the currently supported major browsers for Windows—many are, to be sure, but not most.

That said, we do intend to include an extension for Safari in a future release of 1Password for Windows, as mentioned earlier in this thread, so we hope you'll give it another try.

    Thanks for your comments!

With Apples iCloud announcement the need for a 1Password Safari extension for windows is greatly increased.

I suspect that the only way to take advantage of iCloud's automatic syncing of bookmarks will be to use Safari on all platforms (Mac, Windows and iOS)

So without a 1Password extension for Safari Windows the whole idea is useless.

I hope you will be able to develop it before fall when iCloud launches, as I don't think Chrome, IE or FF will support iCloud <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />

    Hey Peter,

There are certainly a lot of unknowns right now, and your assertion may be 100% correct....or, it may not. At this time, no one knows.

As you can imagine, since iCloud was revealed yesterday, there has been a lot of chatter on the Forums regarding how all of 1P's platforms will work with it. Feature Request: iCloud Syncing

Please continue to visit the Forums and read AB's Blog. As the details start to come out, I'm sure we'll have a better idea of what needs to be done to take full advantage of Apple's latest foray into the cloud.

Thanks for posting your opinions on the matter. I know you are not alone.

    Cheers!

Why? We haven't seen Safari integrating with iCloud on Windows yet.

Or Google Chrome. Or Xmarks. In other words: if bookmark sync is an important feature for you, then there are plenty of opportunities to make this (and 1Password) work across platforms.

Eventually, a Safari extension will appear on Windows. However, do not expect this before iCloud launches. Safari on Windows is low priority for us now because the Safari market share on Windows is extremely low. There are other features that require our attention.

With the release of Safari 5.1 and the new 1Password extension is there any chance we will see support for Safari on Windows? Extensions are cross-platform so I imagine that simplifies the browser side of the equation a little. Hope you guys can add support soon.

edit: The extension installs on Safari 5.1 for Windows. It gives a Data Not Found error when you try to unlock it though. Obviously the support services for the plug-in in Windows are not in place, as is expected since the Safari extension is new. Hopefully adding support is not too difficult as I imagine the extension connects with 1P in a similar way to the Chrome extension, which is already supported on Windows.

I would be willing to say that Safari has been pretty nice since about version 4, but with 5.1 it just got really, really good.

Awesome! I think it is telling that the last few months have seen an increase in interest. Just to elaborate on what Fleet said: From what I have seen this year since joining AgileBits, implementing the frameworks on the 1Password side to interface with the Safari extension is not trivial. That said, these are exciting times, and anything is possible. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Considering Apples current mobileme offering for windows currently supports bookmark syncing on IE & Safari, I would be surprised if the new iCloud service didn't offer the same if not more (e.g. firefox). I have been using 1password for Windows for some time and would certainly not quote the whole idea as useless. Although I do share the view that an extension for Safari on Windows would be great.

I hope you can do it. I have gone the other way to most people (started on Windows + iphone, got 1password then got a mac). This is the one thing that is stopping me from using Safari on my work laptop (Windows).

I have released a BETA version of our Safari extension for Windows. It is included with 1.0.9.BETA-236. Please take a look here: File > Preferences (Ctrl+P) > Browsers.
  • Hi, there.

    So pleased you've released a beta for Sarari on Windows <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/emoticon-0137-clapping.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='(clap)' />

I've installed the extenstion in Safari on Windows. However, whenever I load Safari a badge '1' appears over the extension icon in the tool bar. I've restarted the Helper, uninstalled and then reinstalled the extension and restarted too but nothing removes the '1' badge. Therefore of course, when I type in my Master Password it fails to log me on.

When I go to Preferences it fails to show the Safari extension installed (the othwer browsers have their extension installed) yet it aludes in the installation that it's installed; it would seem not completely though.

I know it's beta and to be expected. Any thoughts at all?

    Many thanks

Sounds like the helper isn't running, or the extension does not communicate with the helper. Are you running a Proxy server?

    SOVLED! (See 2. Update)

Hi i have the same problem as Bottleneck reports.

When i want to open the keychain the Safari Extension popups a window with the message that it can't connect to the helper.

I tested it with the Extension 3.8.7 and also with 3.8.8 Beta both don't work.

My Windows User has no local Administrator rights, don't know if this is a reason for the problems.

Update: I take a look on the Task Manager, their i see a Process "Agile1pAgent.exe" that runs with the adminstrative User i used for 1Password installation.

    2. Update: After a restart of my PC the Process "Agile1pAgent.exe" runs with my normal logged in User so now the Safari Extension works fine.

P.S. I'm very happy that we now get the Extension for Safari on Windows.

  • I have the same problem : i a badge '1' appears over the extension icon in the tool bar.

    Any idea ?

The red badge is saying: "1Password helper is not running". Have you tried to restart your system?

If you are using a proxy to connect to the internet, it is possible that the proxy is preventing the connection to the 1Password helper.

To solve this, please follow these steps:

    1. Open the Windows Control Panel (Start > Control Panel)

    2. Open the Internet Options

    3. Click on the "Connections" tab

    4. Click on the "LAN settings" button

    5. if "use a proxy server" is checked, make sure "bypass proxy server for local addresses" is also checked

    6. Click on the "Advanced" button

    7. Under "Exceptions", make sure 127.0.0.1 is added, for example: *.local;127.0.0.1

Please let me know how this worked out.
  • It doesn't work... I tried to restart, and exceptions in proxy were ok...

But It works with chrome and mozilla...

This makes sense, because Chome and Firefox are running a different extension (not powered by the 1Password agent/helper).

I have received your diagnostics report. The agent/helper is running. So far so good. But for some reason, Safari cannot connect to it. Looks like some proxy is blocking things. In Safari, can you please follow these steps?

    1. click the Gear icon in the upper-right corner

    2. click "Preferences"

    3. click the "Advanced" tab

    4. Click: Proxies: "Change Settings"

    5. Click: "LAN settings"

Please make a screen shot of the window, and send it to me

    6. Click the "Advanced" button

Please make another screen shot, and send it to me.

    Thanks!
