Feature Request: Global/Universal Search

<div class="IPBDescription">Search everywhere, not just the current vault</div>Hi,

Do you have any plan to implement a feature of a search in all folders,

like you have in your windows desktop app?

This missing capanilities is the only one that prevent me

from shifting from splashID....

If yes then do you have an estimation when?

Thanks,

Tomer

    Hi Tomer,

Thank you for asking! This suggestion has come up from time to time. Thank you for letting us know it would be useful to you as well. We are considering improving this in a future update, but I do not currently have a time frame for when or if the feature will be available.

We are a small team with limited resources, so we try not to over-promise and under-deliver but rather under-promise and over-deliver. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
  • Yes, I miss that feature too.

We need to be able to search through all items at once. That's a must.

Yes, we need that feature on the mobile devices. I often don't recall under which category an item is stored (accounts, logins, notes, etc.), so I end up having to search through one at a time. This is the one thing that's been bugging me ever since I started to use 1Password on the iPhone. I just signed on to add this as a new feature request, but found it was already there - surprised so few people have asked for it - is there a way around that I don't know about? Or are people just extremely organized about the categories.

Other than that I love 1Password - Thanks!

Thanks for taking the time, rene!

The different "vaults," as we call them, store different types of information, so I usually know where to look. Any login for a website is in "Logins," while other username/password combinations for hardware or software and stored in "Accounts." Credit cards and bank information are stored in "Wallets," and only software licenses are stored in "Software" (which I only need when I am installing something). <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

That being said, cross-vault search in our iOS apps is definitely on our radar!

I absolutely need the feature to search in all fields!

I have tried 1Password for Mac first and found out it was possible to search "everything" "everywhere". And that's why I decided to buy 1Password for iPad and iPhone, expecting it could do the same. And now I had to learn it doesn't work there. I have to say I'm quite disappointed. That's a real problem for me, for I want to keep a bunch of unstructured information in the area "secure notes". And when I can search only the titles it's not very useful.

so please please implement this, at least for the "secure notes"!

Welcome to the forum, MacCrack, and thanks for the vote!
  • I bought 1Password for Windows. I'd like to have my secrets now also on my iPhone and iPad. But I will NOT buy 1P for iPhone/iPad until it has "search as you type" (or incremental search) functionality in all folders and in all fields! This is also a must for me, because I need to find my passwords or secrets often in a 'Just a second Sir, I forgot my pin number...' situation. And then it's difficult to remember under which name and category I stored it...

Welcome to the forums, Envi. Thanks for letting us know you are anxious for this feature as well.

I have found that I can look up my well-organized items more quickly than I could possibly search for them, but this is certainly a feature we are considering for the future. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
  • I wrote in the title "Can be difficult to find anything". In fact there is no Search function!

Looking in my 1Password Mac I see that I have in all 621 items, 370 of them logins.

And the only way (that I know off) of finding some item in my iPod is seeing it in name index.

Could you please, please add a global search function to 1Password iPhone/iPod/iPad

    Francisco
  • Hi Francisco,

At the moment we don't have a global search in our iOS versions of 1Password, however this is something we're looking into for the future, once we can find a way to provide this search without impacting the performance of 1Password.

In the iPhone and iPod touch version of 1Password you can 'pull down' the item list to reveal a search field in each section. In the iPad version there should be a search field at the top of the list of your items, again in each section.

    I hope that helps.

You're welcome, fahirsch, I'm sorry the search field wasn't more obvious. If I remember correctly the Contacts app on the iPhone uses the same 'hidden' search field method as we do, so I think our developers wanted to make things consistent.

I vote, with as much weight as I'm allowed, for the implementation of a global search function in iOS. I have over a thousand records in my DB, with information spread from web logins, to Software records, to notes for hardware records, then note records containing server names/passwords, and much more, it's difficult to remember what "type" a particular record is. Sometimes information I need is spread across a web login, note, and software record.

Just "voicing my opinion". In my role as a Software Process and Disaster Recovery Analyst for Fortune 500 companies, I use this app many, many times per day, but not just for website usernames/passwords. I actually use the software and notes "types" as much as Logins, and global search would make my life MUCH easier.

I already thanked you for your input in the other thread, but didn't want this message to go unacknowledged. We appreciate knowing that you'd find this useful.
  • Yes. While the existing title search is better than nothing, not being able to search through notes, as well as different record types (secure notes, logins, accounts, etc.), is crippling. Your competitors have this feature, after all.

We are certainly looking at adding this in a future release.

I support the request for a "Search All" feature. I usually want to search through all records, not just one type of record.

Since "Search Everywhere" is the default in the desktop app., it's confusing when the iPad app only searches within a specific type of record. I have a lot of info scattered through different types of records: just searching within one type of record makes it look like key records are missing. If I want to look at my bank data, for example, some of that is in Notes, some in the Vault and some in Logins. I would very much prefer to be able to input the name of my bank, and see search results for every record involving my bank.

It's not really viable for the user to remember what type of record holds each piece of information.

    Big vote for this functionality.

Not sure why this was not on the short-list of required functions from v1.

Another big vote for universal search.

It was a performance tradeoff in the early days of much slower mobile devices. It wasn't that long ago that iOS devices were single core and very limited in processing power. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

This is obviously less important on the latest devices, but we do still consider backwards compatibility to some extent. I will pass along your vote for this to the developers.

    Thanks for the feedback!

P.S. Only one vote per person is allowed I am afraid. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I merged all the different threads requesting the same feature into one.

+1 for universal search on iPhone. I can always find what I need by going to the category but it would save time to be able to just search anywhere for anything.

Another way to bring the search field is to hit the time on the top.

This is the iPhone and iPod way of going to the top.

  • Strong vote for "global Search", really missing that feature.

Recently switched from Splash-id after years. Though Import did not work and entering 360 entries manually for hours i like 1password better. Mac Version is wonderful, but the iPad and iPhone versions need two improvements urgently in my opinion:

    1) global search

    2) localisations like Mac version ( for me german language, of course .. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> )

    Looking forward for that improvements,

    Best regards

    Michael

    Greetings from Germany
  • Hallo Michael. Willkommen auf den Foren!

Thank you for your kind words regarding 1Password! Primarily, we've been allocating our resources to updating the Mac and Windows desktop platforms and preparing to support new browsers by their release dates.

However, with the coming of iOS 5, there are some great ideas floating around, and I am certain that the future holds some exciting changes for our iOS app.

Thank you for giving us two suggestions for the current app. I've added both to our feature request list!

    Cheers!

    Hello!

It's so annoying an unavailability of application-wide search! Does it possible to enable it in any future release?..

    Thank you!
