Feature Request: Custom Templates
Hi,
I'm interested in future of this Mac program. Guys, do you have any plans to change "fixed" concept of 1Password? I mean that as for now - 1Password has fixed 6 vaults without any customization space left for the user (few fixed tamplates, no custom templates option)<img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> Are you going to change something in that direction? Examples giving more freedom for the user could be Spb wallet and safewallet:)

I can't share any specifics or a timeframe with you just yet, but this is definitely on our radar.

That's great news. I just bought this application knowing that it is something that is on your radar. I like to include some other important information with my accounts, and right now, I use the 'Notes' feature, but not as clean.Flag 0 -
I hate to burst your bubble Rimvydas but AWS has been saying that this feature is on "radar" for *2* years now.Flag 0

I used to feel a need for more control over fields and customization. In eWallet, which allows you to change fields for each card or template, I used to do that a lot. But eventually I realized there is little point in it. The fields aren't mapped to anything, they don't do anything, they just hold data in case I need to see it. I'm content now with just putting all that stuff in a Notes field, and I can find it there just as easily, without all the fiddling with templates, field names, data types, etc.

But 1P's Notes field is in clear text, which could be an issue with certain data there. It's similar with clear text Secure Notes, as discussed in another topic a few months ago.Flag 0 -

You're right, sjk, while many users will be happy with just using the notes fields, like Jim is, a lot of users would prefer to have complete control over how the templates are setup, including being able to mask certain fields.
Our aim is to make template creation and editing as easy as possible for everyone, so that adding new item types to 1Password is something anyone can do. Because of this, we do need to take more time to make sure that everything works well and there are no issues in syncing custom templates.Flag 0 -

Just saw this note in the 1Password Beta 13 release notes:
Is this new data format the custom templates that we've all been waiting for?

We will announce all the details about it as soon as we finish working on it first. I'd like to suggest the addition of a new wallet item type to 1Password for personal identification cards.
The current Portuguese citizen identification card contains quite a lot of information. Not all of it is relevant, but here's the complete list:
- Name(s)
- Surname(s)
- Gender
- Height
- Nationality
- Date of Birth
- Expiry Date
- Civil ID Number
- Tax ID Number
- Social Security Number
- Healthcare Number
- Voter Number
- Voter Registration Location
- Parent names
In addition to this, the card has the following PIN numbers:
- Address PIN (the main one)
- Authentication PIN
- Digital Signature PIN
Currently I'm using a simple Secure Note to store all this information, but it would be great to have a native wallet item type to store this.
I can post some additional information on this if required.
Thanks!Flag 0 -

Hello there, JoaoPinheiro!
I hope you don't mind, but I merged your post with this thread about a more general proposed solution: Custom templates. While we don't have anything to announce, this is on our radar, as it would make it easy for you or anyone else to create items exactly as needed, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all solution. The concern with this is that it will make it much more difficult for 1Password to fill forms properly, since it will not know how to deal with the custom fields and such.
I will admit that 1Password is a bit North American-centric, as this is where the majority of the AgileBits folks live and work. Hopefully we can add this at some point to make it easier for everyone to store their data as they wish, but for now a Secure Note is a good stopgap measure.
Let me know if there is anything else you would like to add. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />Flag 0 -

I might be wrong, but the vast majority of request that I've seen for custom templates has been for identification cards and other items which are not typically used for form fill purposes. Likewise, all of the browser plugins allow you to not just fill forms but also to reference your 1password library of credit cards, identities, and logins for reference where items can be copied, etc. I can foresee simply adding one more bottom tab (as in the chrome plugin's logins, identities, and credit cards) that would be for custom item reference. Just an idea:

Thanks for the suggestion, egordin! If only it were that simple. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />
The form filling code is already very complex for the existing items, if we were to attempt to fill everyone's custom templates it would be a nightmare for both us at AgileBits and all of our users. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_worried.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':S' />
As far as I understand it, custom templates will not be able to fill forms on websites (which is why very structured data has been the avenue 1Password has traveled thus far).
Stodgy disclaimer: I am not one of the developers, and my understanding may be incorrect. This is not a promise of a feature nor is it a denial of a feature. Pigs may or may not fly.Flag 0 -

I don't mind at all, no problem.
I understand the issue of filling forms with information from custom templates. However, like egordin mentioned, the identity card information doesn't need to be used to fill in any forms; I'll be content with custom templates even if they can't be used for that purpose.Flag 0 -

Totally. That is a great point, and a lot of people would probably be more than satisfied with just having the ability to customize their 1Password entries a bit more. We just have made such a big deal out of how great it is to have 1Password AutoFill forms that it's a bit of a balancing act to do this without it feeling like a step backwards. I would hate for people to feel like we pulled a "bait and switch" when we offer filling for some things but not others. Disclaimers and fine print suck[sup]*[/sup]. If we do this, we want to be sure we do it right. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Thank you for the insider perspective - this makes sense and I agree that if you're going to do this, thinking it through entirely is vital. That said, 1password currently does store information that is not available (nevermind applicable) for AutoFill - you can't AutoFill Secure Notes or Software Licenses. As far as I understand, these items are stored as "reference" items, to be looked up and copied when needed but not to AutoFill anything. I just saw the custom templates as an extension 1Password's currently existing "reference" items features.
I think the distinction between the AutoFill items and the "reference" items was in terms of the browser plugins: currently the browser plugins only access the "AutoFill" items (logins, identities, and credit cards). There may not be a need for the browser plugin to access the current "reference" items (secure notes & software), but the addition of custom templates may potentially create such a demand. Therefore, as seen in my simple mockup, I included the custom items option in the browser plugin, thereby adding a "reference" category where previously there were only AutoFill categories. This indeed may confuse users if they're not able to AutoFill these but are able to do it with everything else. Maybe a solution would be to not have "custom items" in the browser plugin but limit it to the 1Password application as with the secure notes and software categories currently?
Finally, and I apologize for the diatribe haha, aren't custom "autofill" form items already an option in 1Password, as I can enter as many custom fields as I want for a "login" item?

I didn't have time to create a custom icon for it so I just used a built-in photoshop "custom shape." Seemed like a custom item haha.Flag 0 -

In that sense, yes, but they are still Login items with a "fixed" template of URL, username, password. The request for custom templates usually revolves around "reference" items rather than "autofill" items. (I like the words you have chosen for that distinction.) Hopefully this will be clear to most folks if/when it is introduced.

Hi All -
Any possibility of adding more choices to the wallet? Searching these forums, I see that a lot of people have asked for a debit card category separate from credit card -- I second that idea.
Here's my wishlist:
1. Debit card
2. Student/Faculty ID
3. Library card
4. Health insurance card
5. Generic ID (?)
It is surprising that you don't have these, but you have hunting license. Also no fishing license? C'mon, you can't have one without the other!
All kidding aside, this is a great product. I even use the Windows version at work (which is coming along, but not still not as good), in addition to the original version on my mac. Keep up the good work.
CheersFlag 0 -
Hello sudobear and welcome the Forums!
As you noted, a lot of people have requested the debit card category, in addition to a myriad of other wish list items.
While searching the Forums, you may have come across the exciting feature that AgileBits is working on for possible future inclusion with 1P: Custom Templates
I do not know where the concept is in the development pipeline, but I do know that AB is putting a serious time and effort into the project.
When I first read of the template idea, I wondered why AB couldn't just whip a template together (like in Excel, for instance) and drop the extra code into 1P immediately. However, after reviewing some replies from AB's staff, I am of the understanding that it's not that simple. Apparently, synching across different platforms is one of the issues that AB wants to be sure they investigate thoroughly...there are other considerations as well.
If the templates make it into the software, I'll be very happy. In the meantime, I'll just have to trust that AB won't add the functionality until they feel it is ready for primetime.
Thanks for adding your vote for additional wallet categories and for posting your wish list. Hopefully, you'll get an early present.
Cheers!

Thanks, DarkAngel! We think Custom Templates are the wave of the future, so while I can't make any promises with a time frame, I can say it is much more likely that we would allow you to create your own templates before we would add every template that everyone ever requests to 1Password. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

I agree. I am trying to convert my eWallet entries to 1P. I have come to a complete stop since a lot of what is easy to do in eWallet is missing in 1P. Insurance cards, auto details, and so on. I could dump a bunch of stuff in Secure Note, but how about just giving us a really generic form where we can edit the labels (keep the notes field in the form)?Flag 0 -
I'd love it if there was a preset item for frequent flyer accounts. It would be great to list the account number and customize with a logo, maybe even points balances. The closest to this I can see is to create a generic account, but then it looks like a web account.Flag 0

Welcome to the forums, codycomposer! I merged your post with the custom templates feature request thread. In the mean time, consider using the "Reward Program" item in the Wallet vault. There is also "Membership Card." The credentials for he website would obviously be saved as a Login.
I hope that helps. Thanks for letting us know you are interested in this as well. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />Flag 0
